UFC Fight Island 8: Post Weigh-In Analysis

Chiesa vs. Magny

Our Main Event for UFC Fight Island 8 is official. Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny looked healthy and strong on the scale. There were no indicators of a rough weight cut for either man, and these gentlemen look prepared to go five. Split your exposure here.

Lazzez vs. Alves

This exciting welterweight bout between Mounir Lazzez and Warlley Alves has started at the weigh-in. You can tell Alves didn’t enjoy the weight-cut process and didn’t seem to be the most pleasant as he stepped on the scale. I can’t really blame him since cutting weight is a brutal experience. Lazzez came in looking fresh, fit and ready to go, while Alves seemed irritated and somewhat zapped. Don’t read too much into this one; these are just some subtle tells I picked up on. Lazzez has a tough test in front of him, but this does inspire more confidence in my Lazzez pick.

Villanueva vs. Moreira

I didn’t think this fight could get any uglier, and I have been proven wrong. Vinicius Moreira needed to use the towel at the weigh-in and seemed relieved to have made the light heavyweight limit. When these fighters squared up, I noticed Moreira’s big frame in comparison to Ike Villanueva‘s compact body. We need exposure to both sides due to the volatility of these fighters.

Araujo vs. Modafferi

Roxanne Modafferi in typical fashion was a character at the weigh-ins and embraced her fascination for anime. Viviane Araujo was all business, looked fantastic on the scale, and I love the intensity. This is a tough test for Araujo, but I think she has what it takes in this matchup.

Nam vs. Schnell

My expectations are high for this flyweight matchup, and both men looked great on the scale. It’s crazy to think Matt Schnell has been knocked out twice in the lightest weight class in the UFC. Tyson Nam is a powerful man, and Schnell’s durability is the biggest X-factor here. The weigh-in was not helpful for this matchup.

Murphy vs. De Andrade

This matchup screams fireworks. I can already tell this fight is going to live up to the hype. Douglas Silva de Andrade is in phenomenal shape. Andrade looked extremely powerful at the weigh-ins. Lerone Murphy comes in fantastic shape, and looks to have the size advantage though. I feel like someone is getting finished here, and I’m smashing exposure to both sides of this fight.

Breese vs. Akhmedov

We are one day away from this fight actually happening. This high-level contest between Tom Breese and Omari Akhmedov should be a good one. Both competitors look sculpted from clay and have all the tools to climb the division. I did notice Breese has a distinct height advantage over Akhmedov, but this weigh-in wasn’t particularly helpful. I might be slightly underweight to the field since both men are capable of nullifying each other.

Simon vs. Pirrello

One of the most dangerous things in the fight game is a fighter with nothing to lose. Gaetano Pirrello fits that description, as he is stepping up on short-notice to take on Ricky Simon. Pirrello and Simon looked great on the scale, and you could cut the tension with a knife. It’s important for Simon to not take Pirrello lightly here. I will be exposed to both sides of this fight due to the intensity, but the likely outcome is Simon utilizing his dominant wrestling. This weigh-in instilled confidence in my exposure levels.

Mudaerji vs. Adashev

You guys know where I stand with this matchup as my friend Zarrukh Adashev takes on Su Mudaerji. Everyone in the world will be on Mudaerji, as he is a knockout specialist facing a guy who was just knocked out while possessing a seven-inch reach advantage over Adashev. If you want to be contrarian from the field, Adashev is probably the most contrarian. Adashev was a late replacement last time out against Tyson Nam and was unfortunately knocked out. Adashev had a full camp this time and looked much better and strong on the scale. The height and reach advantage for Mudaerji is significant. This is a fight I am targeting.

Lungiambula vs. Perez

This fight is definitely flying under the radar and could prove to be an exciting matchup. Dalcha Lungiambula is never in a boring fight, and Markus Perez is a gamer. Both men got in each other’s face and refused to back down. When I see that at a weigh-in, it makes me want to smash my exposure levels even more. Perez is a well-rounded fighter but is just coming off a knockout loss to Dricus Du Plessis. Lungiambula hasn’t been in the cage in a while, but his skills are evident. I will be overweight to the field on this fight.

Figueiredo vs. Rivera

Francisco Figueiredo made weight like a professional and takes on Jerome Rivera. Intensity must run in the blood, as Figueiredo got right in Rivera’s face. Rivera seems up for the challenge, and this fight could surprise some people. There was no real help here with the weigh-ins, though.

Davis vs. Jones

I have high expectations for this fight between Mike Davis and Mason Jones. Davis looked a lot better than Jones on the scale, but I wouldn’t read too much into this one. Jones is a notable prospect outside the UFC, and Davis will be a tough test. Davis clearly looked to be in better shape, but I am smashing exposure to this fight regardless.

Nurmagomedov vs. Morozov

The weigh-ins were exactly what I expected from Umar Nurmagomedov and Sergey Morozov. This is an evenly matched contest, and it was like both men were looking in a mirror. These fighters possess similar qualities, and I expect a back-and-forth affair. I will be slightly underweight to the field on this fight despite their skills.

Fiorot vs. Leonardo

Kicking off our morning card is Manon Fiorot versus Victoria Leonardo. This matchup should be an exciting one, as Fiorot brought her intensity to the face-off. I still favor Fiorot in the bout, as she looks to be the more aggressive fighter and is in good shape.
