F1 DFS Preview for Bahrain Grand Prix

The Bahrain Grand Prix kicks off the 2022 season after a winter of added restrictions. Formula 1 took a big stand recently to try to minimize the gap between the teams. Teams at the bottom of the Constructors in 2021 were given more time in the wind tunnel and time to work on their cars for the upcoming year. Teams like Red Bull and Mercedes have seen less time to get their car ready, but as far spring testing goes, both teams seem to still have good pace.

Since it’s the first race of the season, the qualifying is going to be ultra-important when doing research. Multiple teams have had good showings in their spring testing in Barcelona , while many teams experimented with new things last week in the Bahrain testing.

Teams will no doubt have their kinks to work out in the early free practice sessions. Because this is the first race with the new implications, teams and lap times are expected to be closer than usual. The Bahrain circuit features 15 turns with two DRS zones on the straights.

The first corner is where most F1 accidents happen since all the cars are tightly compacted on the grid, and Bahrain is no different with its very slow first corner.

There is already big news Thursday afternoon, as Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel ($5,800) will be replaced by former F1 driver Nico Hulkenberg ($5,600) after Vettel tested positive for COVID. Hulkenberg was en route Thursday afternoon for Bahrain and is expected to be with the team for Friday, hopefully taking in the free practice sessions. Hulkenberg was a full-time driver in F1 until the end of the 2019 season. He competed in two races in 2020 as a replacement driver.

The fact that Aston Martin has had mediocre-at-best numbers from the testing sessions, mixed in with a brand-new driver for the weekend, causes concern about their potential on Sunday. In 2021 Hamilton started second on the grid and won the race, while Max Verstappen, who started with pole, finished second and Valtteri Bottas started third and finished in the same spot. Four cars did not finish the race in 2021: Nikita Mazepin (who did not even make it one lap), Fernando Alonso, Nicholas Latifi and Pierre Gasly.

Only two racers who didn’t start inside the top 10 scored points, as Sergio Perez finished fifth after starting in 11th, and Yuki Tsunoda finished ninth after starting 13th. Final practice lap times and front row positions will be crucial for drivers’ ceilings in F1 Fantasy this weekend in Bahrain.
