2022 NASCAR All-Star Race

It is officially the halfway point of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series, with 13 races down and 13 more to go before the playoffs begin. In marking this occasion, it is time for NASCAR’s annual All-Star Race for its Cup Series drivers. Every winner from this year and last year (dating back to the 2021 All-Star Race) is guaranteed spots in a Sunday evening affair where the winner is awarded $1 million. Joining them will be four drivers from qualifying races held a few hours before the All-Star Race. Three spots will be awarded to three winners of short sprint races while a fourth spot will be given to the driver who wins the fan vote. In all, 24 drivers will compete for this massive payout with no impact on the 2022 points standings.

Generally, NASCAR finds some quirky rules package or setup to throw at the vehicles to make the race more entertaining as the drivers struggle to drive a car that is not behaving like the vehicle they typically drive. However, it appears NASCAR wants to make the new Generation Seven vehicle the belle of the ball and is leaving this car alone. That said, it seems NASCAR has saved its quirkiness for the race format itself, including qualifying that will start off with single-car, one-lap qualifying but devolves into the top eight fastest drivers squaring off in a head to head elimination bracket. However, the three-round elimination bracket will not consist of the drivers trying to battle each other via hot laps but will see opposing pit crews timed off in four-tire stops with the last two drivers left setting the pole.

The race format gets lunky itself with the stage one winner getting the first starting position in the final 50-lap feature. The winner of the second stage starts second in the final main feature and the third stage winner gets the third starting spot. Meanwhile, during the second and third stages, a pit stop competition will be held and the winning team of that event gets their driver the fourth starting spot in the final 50-lap race.

These details are practically meaningless to DFS players. What does matter is that, unlike last year, the field is not getting constantly reset after 10-lap intervals, which opens the door to the drivers that start up front being able to lock down more dominator laps. Last year, Larson started on the pole but was a hard recommendation at his salary because of the constant rejiggering of the field. At the end of the 100 laps, Larson ended up winning but he led a total of 17 laps with eight of those being the final eight laps. This year, it appears NASCAR will just continue to let the race fold out as normal from stage to stage. For those playing on FanDuel, something to be mindful of is that with just 12.5 laps led points up for grabs, worrying about a lap leader to anchor a lineup may be a waste of time and effort.

The final piece of the DFS puzzle is the impact of just 125 laps. This places an extra emphasis on place differential and finishing position points as these will be the main avenue that the majority of drivers are accruing fantasy points. Keeping track of the results from the open races and subsequent fan votes will be of utmost importance as these drivers will have the most access to these two scoring metrics and sometimes carry less ownership as DFS players simply set lineups on Saturday evening and fail to keep up with the drivers that gain entrance to the All-Star Race on Sunday.
