Now, let’s dig into a preview of tonight’s matchup between the 2010-11 Bulls and the 2012-13 Heat.

The Teams

Tonight’s quarterfinals matchup features two teams with different expectations coming into the tournament. The 2010-11 Bulls weren’t even guaranteed a spot as they had to win a play-in game against the John Stockton-Karl Malone Utah Jazz. That set them up with a matchup against the 1985-86 Celtics where Derrick Rose was once again able to control the game and launched the Bulls into the quarterfinals.

On the other side, we have one of the tournament favorites in LeBron James’ Miami Heat team, which has everything we want in a potential champion. They arrived in the quarterfinals after dismantling the 1993-94 Houston Rockets despite Hakeem Olajuwon’s massive stat line.

2010-11 Bulls

Starters:

PG – Derrick Rose

SG – Kyle Korver

SF – Luol Deng

PF – Carlos Boozer

C – Joakim Noah

Though Rose was the star during this team’s pinnacle, Chicago featured multiple solid scorers and decent depth off the bench. Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng both averaged over 17 a game and the team ranked 11th in offensive efficiency. However, their identity was on defense where they were consistently causing problems for opposing offenses. Deng and Joakim Noah anchored the No. 1-rated defense in the league and that unit led the Bulls to 62 wins.

2012-2013 Heat

Starters:

PG – Dwyane Wade

SG – Ray Allen

SF – Shane Battier

PF – LeBron James

C – Chris Bosh

This Miami team was one of the most hyped when it came together a few years before the 2012-2013 season, and although they didn’t win five, six or seven titles like the coming-out party suggested, they still created quite a run. In 2011-12, they dismantled Oklahoma City in the Finals to break through and came into this 2012-13 season looking for the back-to-back titles.

Miami found a way to get through a tough seven-game series with the Pacers to set up a Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. In the series, the Spurs were up 3-2 and had a three-point lead with almost no time left in Game 6. LeBron took a 3 to tie the game, missed, but Miami secured the board. They kicked it to Ray Allen in the corner, who hit a clutch 3-pointer with five seconds remaining. In overtime, the Heat held off San Antonio to send it to Game 7, where Tim Duncan would miss clutch shots down the stretch and the Heat would take down the second of back-to-back titles.

This Miami Heat team is missing some of the role players from their roster in NBA2K, but that might just mean we get to see even more of the Big Three on the court. In the opening round against Houston, they had no problem getting into transition and James had over five dunks alone.

The Plays

LeBron James – SF – Heat – $15,500 FanDuel

It is no shock that LeBron is the top option considering this may be the prime version of the King. He averaged 26.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.3 assists with a career-low 3.0 turnovers a game during that season. His 56.5 shooting percentage ranked fifth in the NBA that year, trailing four big men with much different games.

LeBron showed in the opening round how good he can with his abilities in the open floor and the easy transition dunks he can rack up. He is always live to contribute in all five categories and that isn’t going to change here. He is the logical MVP choice on FanDuel and it is hard to imagine him not having a big game once again.

Derrick Rose – PG – Bulls – $15,000 FanDuel

It has only been two games, but you could make a case that Rose has been the MVP of the tournament. He seemingly never comes off the floor and the Bulls have needed him to play at that level to continue their run. He has the ball in his hands so usage isn’t an issue and he doesn’t mind playing in transition and getting out in the open floor. With the Heat having more of a star-studded lineup, they should dominate the MVP and other multiplier spots, but if you are looking for a Bull, I think it has to be Rose.

Dwyane Wade – SG – Heat – $14,000 FanDuel

If you aren’t going to get LeBron for your MVP spot, then Wade is the next man up for Miami. He was the Heat’s original superstar and a monster in his own right once James showed up. Wade isn’t deadly from behind the arc, but still shoots some 3’s and we know how skilled he is at attacking the rim. Look to either use him at the MVP spot as a slightly contrarian play or in the Star/Pro spots where he makes for a great addition to any type of lineup.

Kyle Korver – SG – Bulls – $8,500 FanDuel

The Bulls are going to need more than Rose if they want to stay in this game, and that can present a decent opportunity in single-game FanDuel slates. Korver is a sharpshooter and  is can get hot in a hurry. He was quiet against the Celtics, but we saw the upside in the play-in round against the Jazz where he was deadly behind the arc. The $8,500 price tag is going to allow some top-end options to be paired up and the Bulls should be playing from behind so the 3-ball will be useful.

Shane Battier – SF – Heat – $9,500 FanDuel

With the firepower this Heat teams possesses, it is very unlikely that Battier will become a focal point of their offense. However, we have to remember that Miami is missing a ton of guys from the 2K roster so it should mean massive minutes for Battier, which could equal more volume than anticipated. We know he is a fantastic defender who can rack up blocks and steals, so it is just a matter of seeing if he can hit a few timely buckets. Each single game presents the opportunity to spend up for a few top-end options, but in order to make that happen we need viable salary savers like Battier. I wouldn’t look to him in any of my multiplier spots, but he makes sense as a last man in for this contest.

Final Thoughts

The Bulls have won two games in this tournament and clearly look to have the skill set that translates to NBA2K. Rose can be the best player on the floor during any matchup and the defense of the supporting cast will be a challenge for opponents. However, this isn’t a normal opponent, but the LeBron-led Heat which were one of the strongest teams in the entire bracket. The short bench should mean a ton of time for the Big Three and that is hard to deal with regardless of the Bulls’ strengths. Until someone knocks off LeBron in this tournament, he is the guy to beat and I think we will see that once again with the Heat tonight.
