NBA DFS Picks: Key Building Blocks | Jan. 10
Fred VanVleet: Toronto Raptors at Golden State Warriors
DraftKings $8,500, FanDuel $8,200, Yahoo $37
Ownership Rating (preliminary run): DraftKings 13.9%, FanDuel 23.2% Yahoo 19.0%
Regardless of Kyle Lowry‘s status, I am looking at Fred VanVleet as a core option today. Lowry was out on Friday night for personal reasons, and we do not yet have a status update for tonight. Golden State plays at the second-fastest pace, while Toronto is ninth. Neither team is prioritizing defense this season, and the game has a slate-high 233.5 projected point total.
VanVleet has been elite this season from beyond the arc, sinking 41.1% of his 9.1 3-pointers per appearance. He also leads the team with 22.3 points per game. Lowry leads in assists, but VanVleet is still contributing 5.9 per game, along with a career-high 5.0 rebounds.
Dejounte Murray: San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves
DraftKings $6,800, FanDuel $6,600, Yahoo $29
Ownership Rating (preliminary run): DraftKings 25.4%, FanDuel 31.5% Yahoo 22.2%
We get a pandemic special here, with these two teams having faced off last night as well. Dejounte Murray was one of yesterday’s core plays, and I am going right back to him. Coach Popovich ran with a tight rotation in the overtime win last night, with Murray playing 41 minutes, DeMar DeRozan 44, Keldon Johnson 42 and LaMarcus Aldridge played just 33, as he is still working back from a sore knee. Derrick White is still out, which leaves Murray and veteran Patty Mills as the main ballhandlers. I suspect we will see another 34-35 minutes tonight for Murray, which makes him a nice point-per-dollar option.

NBA DFS Picks: Good Value
Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat
Last night the Heat barely beat an extremely depleted Wizards team in Washington, and now they are in Boston taking on an equally thin squad. Tristan Thompson, Robert Williams and Grant Williams are all in the COVID-19 protocol. Jayson Tatum is doubtful for the same reason and even Jaylen Brown and Semi Ojeleye are at risk of being a “close contact,” so we will need to see what transpires.
If Tatum or Brown are playing, then we want to roll with them in an effort to get over the field. Marcus Smart and Daniel Theis should also see increased opportunities. In the event both Tatum and Brown are out, it becomes more of a dicey situation, as the team would quickly be down to a barren, replacement-level roster. Last night the Wizards put up 124 points in a similar situation, but we have seen other teams struggle to reach 100 points in these scenarios. Kelly Olynyk, Goran Dragic and Jimmy Butler are solid plays from the Heat, and this would be a nice spot for a Bam Adebayo bounce back after his clunker of a performance yesterday.
NBA DFS Picks: Risky Value and Strategy
Tacko Fall: Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat
Smith: DraftKings $3,300, FanDuel $4,500, Yahoo $10
Ownership Rating (preliminary run): DraftKings 18.2%, FanDuel 4.6% Yahoo 14.2%
Yes, Tacko Fall is a fan favorite, but that doesn’t mean he is a good play. On FanDuel I would not want to burn my center slot with a potential single-fantasy-point crater. Over on Yahoo there are better minimum-priced players as listed below. While on DraftKings maybe you could convince me to have him in a couple lineups, this feels like a Boban Marjanovic situation where we could either get 25 fantasy points in a dozen minutes or a goose egg. If he starts, roll with it, but buyer beware because he may rack up fouls as quickly as he racks up blocked shots.
