NBA DFS Picks: Key Building Blocks | Jan. 6

Stephen Curry: Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Clippers

DraftKings $9,800, FanDuel $10,000, Yahoo $49
Ownership Rating (preliminary run): DraftKings 1.1%, FanDuel 2.7% Yahoo <1.0%

It looks like Stephen Curry has definitely regained his shooting touch. On Monday he tallied 30 points in 30.5 minutes and with his +26 did not need to take the floor for the final frame. That means he should be reasonably rested for his matchup tonight against the Clippers, who are on a back-to-back. Paul George (ankle) was ruled out after lock, but prior to the start of his game last night. We have not seen Kawhi Leonard play a back-to-back game since early April all the way back in 2017. My speculation is that George will play and Leonard will sit. As long as one of them is out, there is a chance that if Curry is still in the zone and can keep the game close enough that he plays 35 minutes and flirts with 50 fantasy points.

Keep in mind that player ownership continues to move throughout the day, often times with wild swings in NBA. This is particularly true on large slates where late news may coalesce things. Ben Simmons: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Washington Wizards

DraftKings $8,800, FanDuel $8,700, Yahoo $38
Ownership Rating (preliminary run): DraftKings 7.8%, FanDuel 15.3% Yahoo 13.6%

If you are a little hesitant to roll with Curry, then fellow floor general Ben Simmons is a solid option. I see no issues with playing them both and spending down at other positions. With 22 teams in action tonight, we should not be feeling the pinch of any salary cap constraints. Washington is playing at the third-highest pace in the league with 108.3 possessions per 48 minutes. Philadelphia checks in at 11th at 104.0 per 48 minutes. It should be no surprise that the Wizards are fourth in defensive efficiency, allowing 111.6 points per 100 possessions. Forget that Simmons isn’t going to be taking any 3’s and remember that Thomas Bryant is the main rim protector for Washington. It would be no surprise if Simmons posts his second triple-double of the season tonight in this matchup.

NBA DFS Picks: Good Value

Clint Capela: Atlanta Hawks vs. Charlotte Hornets

DraftKings $6,700, FanDuel $6,500, Yahoo $26
Ownership Rating (preliminary run): DraftKings 15.7%, FanDuel 20.9% Yahoo 26.8%

While Charlotte has been middle of the pack with a 107.8 defensive efficiency rating, they are a bottom-five rebounding team. Surprisingly, they are 10th on the season with 104.3 possessions per 48 minutes. Bismack Biyombo and P.J. Washington will do their best, but it is hard not envisioning Clint Capela making a foray into 40-fantasy-point land on the strength of a double-double tonight. In his last three games, Capela has played 31, 31 and 30 minutes. In these games the Hawks big man is averaging 1.2 fantasy points per minute and has a double-double in each appearance.

Patrick Beverley: Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors

DraftKings $4,000, FanDuel $3,800, Yahoo $10
Ownership Rating (preliminary run): DraftKings 24.1%, FanDuel 18.5% Yahoo 28.4%

While by no means do I expect a reprisal of last night’s masterpiece, this is a fine situation to employ Patrick BeverleyOn Tuesday he dropped 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and two blocks against the Spurs in 33 minutes. Those figures were essentially season highs across the board. Tonight I doubt we will see Leonard playing in his first back-to-back in four seasons, so that should have Beverley in the range of 24-26 minutes with a little room for upside. Beverley is no spring chicken, and this is his ninth season in the NBA after playing two seasons in foreign leagues.

Utilizing NBA WOWY at AddMoreFunds.com, we can see that Beverley has averaged about 0.85 fantasy points per game with and without Leonard. Golden State is playing at the fastest pace in the league while allowing 109.7 points per 100 possessions. Other excellent value plays will reveal themselves throughout the day, but keep Beverley on the short list when the last-minute scramble begins.

NBA DFS Picks: Risky Value

Today is one of the larger slates we will see throughout the season, with 22 teams taking the court. Spots to watch would be with the Bulls, Clippers and Jazz, who are all on road back-to-backs and could see some of their veterans see limited minutes if the game is out of hand. None of the teams playing tonight are playing again on Thursday.

With regards to risky value or bad chalk, there are just so many options it is unlikely we will see gamers forcing in any one egregious play. As a first look, Clippers such as Lou Williams, Luke Kennard and Beverley — whom I reviewed above — could see more or fewer minutes depending on a blowout, health status of George and Leonard, etc. P.J. Washington is getting some early love for the matchup with Atlanta, but he has been wildly inconsistent this year with his fantasy production.

The key takeaway here is to understand that if you are playing more than a handful of lineups, going all in on any one player is not the best strategy. Conversely, it is truly hard for any particular player to break the slate if they are owned 20% or less with such a large player pool.

Once again, we will have plenty of value, so we can facilitate a stars-and-scrubs build. Just keep in mind that it is not necessarily going to be the same players across all of the sites.
