NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks, Wednesday, March 24th

Yahoo Play of the Day – Donovan Mitchell: Utah Jazz vs. Brooklyn Nets

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 38.48 | DraftKings: 40.7
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 5.6% | FanDuel 10.3% | DraftKings 3.8%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $38 | FanDuel $8,400 | DraftKings $8,800

In a fun twist that may be going unnoticed by many gamers, the Utah Jazz are definitely not who we thought they were. Over their last 10 games, coach Quin Snyder’s squad is playing at an increased pace. In this timeframe they are averaging 101.5 possessions per 48 minutes, which is the fifth-fastest pace in the league. They also have the ninth-worst defensive efficiency, allowing 114.6 points per 100 possessions. Even tossing out the one overtime game in this stretch, in the other nine games the Jazz have outscored their opponents 119.4 to 115.4. This indicates that other teams are hanging around into the fourth quarter and that there is more fantasy goodness available on both sides of the ball that is going overlooked by casual DFS players.

Tonight’s matchup has a 230 projected point total and it is against the Nets, which should attract more attention than normal. However, with 22 teams in action, there will not be a lot of popularity going to any particular Jazz player, which makes Donovan Mitchell an excellent NBA DFS pick building block, particularly on Yahoo. He has topped 50 Yahoo points in four of his last seven games and has done a phenomenal job of getting to the line, which bolsters his floor as an NBA DFS pick.

Luka Doncic: Dallas Mavericks at Minnesota Timberwolves

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 54.1 | DraftKings: 57.8
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 20.2% | FanDuel 22.9% | DraftKings 16.2%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $53 | FanDuel $11,000 | DraftKings $11,000

There will be infinite value options tonight, so we should have the luxury of rolling with Luka Doncic. There have been some trade rumors involving teammate Kristaps Porzingis, however, that should have no impact on Doncic, who is a safe option tonight. Dallas has had mediocre results over their last half dozen games, alternating wins and losses. They are 8.5-point road favorites tonight and need to start banking wins if they want to avoid the play-in tournament.

Doncic is having an amazing campaign, with career highs in several key categories. These include 21.1 field-goal attempts with a 48.4% success rate, including 37.1% on 7.9 3-point attempts. He also is sixth in the league with 29.0 points per game and fourth with 9.2 assists per game.

De’Aaron Fox: Sacramento Kings vs. Atlanta Hawks

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 40.89 | DraftKings: 42.14
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 9.6% | FanDuel 11.7% | DraftKings 3.6%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $39 | FanDuel $8,900 | DraftKings $9,000

Gamers are starting to shy away from De’Aaron Fox, as they feel his salary is too high. My friends, this is the new and improved Fox, who has topped 40-plus fantasy points in 10 of his last 12 games. The other two were not horrible, with 28 Yahoo fantasy points in Philadelphia and 37 against a healthier Lakers squad at the beginning of March. Atlanta’s defense is pedestrian at best, and this is the third game of its eight-game road trip working its way through the Western Conference, with the final game in New Orleans still 10 days away. It will be interesting to see if the Hawks arrive with swagger or if losing in Los Angeles to the Clippers on Monday night — which put an end to their eight-game winning streak — has knocked the wind from beneath their wings.

Good Value

Ivica Zubac: Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 33.29 | DraftKings: 33.0
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 55.4% | FanDuel 30.7% | DraftKings 28.7%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $15 | FanDuel $5,000 | DraftKings $5,500

While his salary continues to escalate, it has been well earned by Ivica Zubac. Finally we have some clarity in knowing that Serge Ibaka will miss at least two more games with his sore back. This will allow us to plan on Zubac starting and not have to worry about Ibaka surprising everyone. In the four most recent games without Ibaka, Zubac has averaged 12.8 points, 8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.3 blocks/steals for just a tick shy of 30 Yahoo points. Tonight’s matchup against Jakob Poeltl is not a daunting one, so we can look to Zubac as a solid value option.

Risky Value

John Wall: Houston Rockets vs. Charlotte Hornets

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 34.91 | DraftKings: 36.06
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 30.0% | FanDuel 11% | DraftKings 13.5%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $29 | FanDuel $8,000 | DraftKings $7,600

If Victor Oladipo plays tonight as expected, this does not bode well for John Wall’s fantasy prospects against his increased salary on FanDuel and DraftKings. If Oladipo is held out for a potential trade, then we will want to reassess. Looking at the Awesemo Boom/Bust tool, we can see that Wall has a 10.7% chance of appearing in the DraftKings optimal lineup. Currently he has an 8.4% probability of exceeding his boom score of 48 DraftKings points. On the other hand, there is a 58.9% chance of him falling under his bust score of 38 DraftKings points.

Final Thoughts on Wednesday, March 24th NBA DFS Slate

Tonight there are a lot of moving parts with 22 teams in action tipping off during a three-hour window. The trade deadline is tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET, and we could see players involved in potential deals being pulled just before their games. It may be worthwhile to focus on players who are not involved in trade rumors for tonight’s action. Keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
