NBA DFS Picks: Values + Fades for Aug. 25

NBA DFS Value Pick: Jerami Grant

DraftKings $4,700, FanDuel $4,800, Yahoo $18

After losing two games in a row via blowout, the Nuggets switched their starting lineup. Grant and Monte Morris entered the starting unit in place of Michael Porter Jr. and Torrey Craig. Assuming the same starters, both Grant and Morris make for strong value options with only two games to choose from tonight. Since Sunday’s game ended up competitive despite a loss, I expect the same same starter for Denver since the two games prior were so one-sided.

Not only did Grant start last game, he played 36 minutes. This is excellent news for his upside. During the regular season, he made 25 starts and averaged 26.32 DraftKings points. He put up these stats scoring 32 minutes per start, so we can expect close to 30 fantasy points from him as long as his minutes stick around the 36 mark. The one thing we need to look out for is an update on Gary Harris. After not playing at all in the bubble, Denver upgraded him to questionable for tonight’s must-win game. If active, he could impact rotations and potentially alter the starting lineup.

NBA DFS Stud Pick: Luka Doncic

DraftKings $11,000, FanDuel $11,000, Yahoo $56

So much for the bum ankle. After the Mavericks listed Doncic as questionable to play last game, it seemed he was unlikely to play. At the very least, it appeared likely that the injury would make it difficult for Doncic to play well against the tough defense of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Instead, he played through the injury and destroyed the Clippers while hitting the signature shot of the playoffs to give the Mavericks the win.

Much to my disdain, one of the main reasons for the big Doncic game was because Kristaps Porzingis was ruled out after lock. After no signs of the big man dealing with an injury, Dallas ruled him out minutes before tip. This ruined any hopes of me having a big fantasy night on Sunday. When Porzingis is off the court, we can always count on Doncic to put up big stats. Without the big man on the court this season, Doncic recorded a 39% usage rate and scored 61.69 DraftKings points per 36 minutes. The only path to victory for Dallas if Porzingis sits is a massive game from Doncic.

NBA DFS Fade Pick: Michael Porter Jr.

DraftKings $5,700, FanDuel $5,500, Yahoo $22

I have a slight basketball conspiracy theory that related to Porter. When I watched the Jazz play the Nuggets in their regular season meeting in the bubble, I wondered why the Jazz didn’t attack Porter more often on pick-and-rolls. When going after Porter, it seemed as if Utah scored at will. Now in the playoffs, it is a strategy the team is using extremely frequently. Did the Jazz play a rope-a-dope strategy with Porter in the regular season? Meaning, I think they intentionally didn’t go after him as much on defense to save it for the playoffs. It’s possible Utah goaded Mike Malone into playing Porter big minutes in the first few games of the series.

Last game, Porter’s defense led to him getting benched. He started the game coming off the bench and finished by playing just 23 minutes. Utah is exploiting his defense to the point that he can’t stay on the court. It’s unfortunate because of Porter’s scoring upside, but he isn’t able to produce as a net positive in the playoffs at the moment. Due to the liability of Porter on the defensive end, it doesn’t look like he will play big minutes anytime soon.
