Awesemo’s NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks

Yahoo Play of the Day – Kawhi Leonard: Los Angeles Clippers at Minnesota Timberwolves

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 50.85 | DraftKings: 51.09
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 27% | FanDuel 22.5% | DraftKings 17%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $44 | FanDuel $9,700 | DraftKings $9,400

Paul George (foot) is going to miss at least the next week. This leaves quite a fantasy void that is going to need to be filled by the rest of the ambulatory Clippers. Over their last 10 games, the Timberwolves are playing at the second-fastest pace, with 102.5 possessions per 48 minutes. During this stretch they are allowing 111.5 points per 100 possessions. The Clippers are double-digit road favorites in this matchup.

Kawhi Leonard is producing the second-best fantasy totals of his career behind only last season. He is shooting a career-high 50.4% from the field, along with a career-best 5.1 assists per game. Using NBA WOWY we can see that Leonard gets about a 10% bump in his per-minute fantasy production to 1.39 Yahoo fantasy points when George is off the court. We are getting a 10-15% discount across the board on today’s salary.

James Harden: Brooklyn Nets vs. Indiana Pacers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 57.36 | DraftKings: 59.69
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 24.2% | FanDuel 34.7% | DraftKings 19.5%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $50 | FanDuel $10,600 | DraftKings $10,400

Kevin Durant (health and safety protocol) will be out again tonight, and who knows what Kyrie Irving will do on a back-to-back. Regardless, we can consider James Harden one of the top plays on the slate. In his 12 games with Brooklyn, he is averaging 39.3 minutes with 23.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 11.8 assists and 2.0 combined blocks/steals.

Malcolm Brogdon: Indiana Pacers at Brooklyn Nets

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 38.24 | DraftKings: 40.22
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 25.4% | FanDuel 27.2% | DraftKings 20.9%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $31 | FanDuel $7,200 | DraftKings $7,400

The Nets lost last night to the Pistons in Detroit 122-111, marking their third straight loss and fourth in their last five games. In their last six non-overtime games, they are allowing 126.7 points on average. In their last 10 games, they have ceded 120.4 points per 100 possessions while playing at the seventh-fastest pace.

Since Victor Oladipo last took the court for the Pacers (10 games ago), Malcom Brogdon has been phenomenal. He is averaging 36.3 minutes, 22.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.5 combined steals/blocks over this stretch. That works out to just over a fantasy point per minute, and in this matchup anything below 40 fantasy points is going to be a major disappointment. We can also look to Domantas Sabonis as another core option.

Good Value

Oklahoma City Thunder at Los Angeles Lakers

Once again it looks like the Thunder may be rolling with just eight active players tonight. On Monday they took these same Lakers to overtime before losing 119-112. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (knee), Mike Muscala (concussion), George Hill (finger) and Theo Maledon (health and safety) have been ruled out.

We should see a starting lineup of Hamidou Diallo, Al Horford, Isaiah Roby, Darius Bazley and either Kenrich Williams or Luguentz Dort. Those six plus Justin Jackson are the key players to focus on, though the best play will vary by DFS sites, based on salary and positional eligibility. Darius Miller looks like the odd man out, as he has played just 12, 12 and 14 minutes in the three games where Oklahoma City has been running a tight rotation.

Kyle Lowry: Toronto Raptors at Washington Wizards

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 36.48 | DraftKings: 38.28
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 18.2% | FanDuel 8.5% | DraftKings 14.7%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $29 | FanDuel $7,600 | DraftKings $7,300

We are getting a discount on Kyle Lowry, who is coming off back-to-back duds. In his last game he played just 8 minutes due to back spasms, but he is expected to be a full go. In the game prior to that, he barely managed to top 20 fantasy points against the Hawks on a 4-for-16 shooting performance. We know that the Toronto starters play heavy minutes, with four regulars in the NBA’s top 20, including Lowry at 34.8 minutes per game. He is tied with O.G. Anunoby, while Pascal Siakam (35.7) and Fred VanVleet (36.3) are seeing even more court time.

In their 10 games since being quarantined, Washington has been horrible on defense, allowing 118.8 points per game. This includes allowing 146 to Brooklyn and 132 to Portland. The astounding thing is that none of their games have gone to overtime this season.

Risky Value

Dillon Brooks: Memphis Grizzlies vs. Charlotte Hornets

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 27.45 | DraftKings: 28.33
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 4% | FanDuel 19.9% | DraftKings 9.2%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $19 | FanDuel $5,200 | DraftKings $5,500

Tonight on FanDuel Dillon Brooks is projected to be fairly popular. This is related to his reasonable salary and the slim pickings at the shooting guard position, where we have to roster two. Looking at the Awesemo Boom/Bust Tool, we can see that he has an 18.2% probability of being in the optimal lineup. However, he has just a 5.1% probability of reaching his boom score of 5x his salary + 10 (36 FanDuel points). On the other hand, he has a 58.5% probability of producing a bust score, or something less than 5x his salary (26 FanDuel points). Look to Kevin Huerter and Donte DiVincenzo, who carry a similar salary with the same upside but less downside risk compared to Brooks.

Final Thoughts on the Wednesday, Feb. 10 NBA DFS Slate

Tonight we have a staggered slate with regards to start times. Only two games will be tipping off within the first hour of most contests. This means that quite a bit of news will be coming out after lock. We will want to be near our computers or mobile devices in order to properly react. Keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
