🏀 The Deep Dive: NBA DFS Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel | Tuesday, February 9th

This is our primary in-depth NBA DFS article, and it will be free this season. The goal of this article isn’t just to give you a few plays to plug into your lineup, but to dig a little bit deeper into why projections may (or may not) like certain players. Hopefully, after reading this article, you’ll have a better feel for the slate as a whole. Combining the context from this article with the raw data that is available in our Boom/Bust tool, Projections and Ownership Projections should allow you to build strong lineups and make optimal NBA DFS picks for any type of contest on DraftKings and FanDuel.

I plan to update this article with notes at the top until about 5 p.m. EST each day. After that, be sure to check out the Deeper Dive show with Loughy and I from 5 to 6 every weekday and Live Before Lock in the hour leading up until lock each day on the Awesemo YouTube channel.

If you have any questions after reading the article, always feel free to DM me in Slack.

Note: This article takes a very long time to write, especially on slates with a lot of games. In order to get information out earlier in the day, I will post the first few games and then update with the remaining games as I write them on bigger slates. NBA DFS Deep Dive: DraftKings + FanDuel Picks | Feb. 9

Brooklyn Nets at Detroit Pistons (+6.5): 230

Brooklyn Nets

Kevin Durant is out again but Kyrie Irving is probable tonight.

James Harden and Irving have played two games together without Durant this season. Harden has averaged 1.51 DraftKings points per minute with a 22.0 percent usage rate, 12.6 percent rebounding rate and 38.8 percent assist rate. Irving has averaged 1.47 DraftKings points per minute with a 32.9 percent usage rate, 5.4 percent rebounding rate and 28.2 percent assist rate.

We can break it down a little bit further by looking at their per-minute production with and without the other on the floor since Harden joined the Nets. Harden and Irving have played 69 minutes together without Durant on the floor. Harden has averaged 1.20 DraftKings points per minute while Irving has averaged 1.24 DraftKings points per minute. Harden has averaged 1.56 DraftKings points per minute in 118 minutes without either of Irving or Durant on the floor. Irving has averaged 1.49 DraftKings points per minute in 76 minutes without Durant or Harden on the floor. If we expect Harden and Irving to each play 36 minutes and to have their minutes staggered so that if one is on the bench the other is one the floor, then we would expect them each to average about 1.32 DraftKings points per minute based on their past production. While Harden certainly is a strong play, Irving actually looks like the better option given his less expensive price tag.

DeAndre Jordan’s playing time is inconsistent, but he is inexpensive and has a favorable matchup against the Pistons’ frontcourt. Jordan played 18.1 minutes in a start against the Raptors two games ago and then played 26.6 minutes in three quarters of a blowout loss against the 76ers on Saturday. The Pistons don’t have a center like Joel Embiid, so I think it’s likely that Jordan plays fewer minutes tonight than he did against the Sixers. The reason that I am still mentioning him is that, if I’m wrong and he does get to 24 to 26 minutes, he should have a big game for his salary against Detroit. Jordan has averaged 1.0 DraftKings point per minute this season and Detroit has allowed the eighth-most total rebounds per game and the sixth most offensive rebounds per game to opponents over the last month. Jeff Green is a similar option to Jordan in that the range of playing time is fairly wide but, if he does reach the top end, he is likely to outproduce his salary.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: James Harden ($10,300), Kyrie Irving ($9,300)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: James Harden ($11,000), Kyrie Irving ($9,500)

Detroit Pistons

Wayne Ellington, Delon Wright, Frank Jackson and Dennis Smith are all questionable. Killian Hayes and Jahlil Okafor are out. Derrick Rose is on the Knicks. Fortunately, this is the first game of the night because there are a lot of moving parts right now.

Wright should benefit from the trade of Rose as long as he is able to suit up tonight. Wright has averaged 34.6 minutes per game and 0.98 DraftKings points per minute in seven starts without Rose this season compared to 0.94 DraftKings points per minute and 27.4 minutes per game in 11 starts with Rose active. Brooklyn is horrendous defensively, so Wright should be able to produce at above average rates.

Jerami Grant has become less expensive recently and he looks like the top option from the Pistons. Brooklyn is without their best wing defender in Durant, so their defense should be even worse than normal. Grant leads the Pistons with 35.8 minutes per game over the last month and he has averaged 1.10 DraftKings points per minute this season. His 26.5 percent usage rate is the highest on the team now that Rose is no longer on the roster.

Blake Griffin has been bad this season, averaging only 0.85 DraftKings points per minute with a disappointing 20 percent usage rate. His salary reflects that, however, and he has averaged 30.4 minutes per game over the last month. Like everyone else, he should benefit from this matchup and projects as a strong option — though rostering him probably won’t be a particularly fun experience.

Mason Plumlee’s playing time is a little bit more secure tonight with Okafor out. Typically, the Pistons have been using a two center rotation with Plumlee and Isaiah Stewart but, occasionally, Okafor sneaks into the rotation and steals a few minutes. Plumlee played about 37 minutes in regulation against the Lakers in Detroit’s last game and has averaged 29.7 minutes per game in 11 starts with Okafor inactive this season.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Jerami Grant ($7,000), Blake Griffin ($5,000)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Jerami Grant ($7,800), Delon Wright ($6,000), Blake Griffin ($5,300)

Houston Rockets at New Orleans Pelicans (-6): 226.5

Houston Rockets

We don’t have an injury report for Houston yet since they played yesterday, but they said yesterday that Victor Oladipo would rest tonight and Eric Gordon and John Wall would return.

Wall has averaged 1.29 DraftKings points per minute with a 31.0 percent usage rate and 43.3 percent assist rate in 162 minutes without either of Oladipo or Harden on the floor this season. In three full games without either player, Wall has averaged 1.21 DraftKings points per minute with a 34.6 percent usage rate and 40.8 percent assist rate. New Orleans ranks 28th in defensive rating over the last month, though they do have good individual defenders so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them improve going forward. Wall played 27.9 minutes in his last game without Oladipo, but he missed his final rotation due to a blowout. I expect 30 to 32 minutes from Wall tonight.

Gordon played 32.7 minutes and left a couple minutes on the table in the last game that he played alongside Wall without Oladipo. Gordon’s minutes will most likely be staggered with Wall’s which improves his projection because he will have the ball in his hands a lot when Wall isn’t on the floor. Gordon has averaged 1.15 DraftKings points per minute with a 30.9 percent usage rate and 13.7 percent assist rate in his three games alongside Wall without Oladipo or Harden this season.

DeMarcus Cousins was disappointing last night as he only played 24.9 minutes and didn’t see the floor in the fourth quarter. It is somewhat concerning that the Rockets elected to go small down the stretch, but the Hornets were using 6-foot-8 Bismack Biyombo for most of the fourth quarter so I’m not overly worried. The Pelicans have a traditional center tonight in Steven Adams so it is less likely that Cousins doesn’t play in the fourth quarter. He has averaged 29 minutes per game and 1.42 DraftKings points per minute in six starts without Christian Wood this season.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: John Wall ($7,300), DeMarcus Cousins ($7,400)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: John Wall ($7,700), DeMarcus Cousins ($6,000)

New Orleans Pelicans

Josh Hart is questionable tonight. Nobody else from the Pelicans’ rotation is on the injury report.

Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson are both priced up so they look more like tournament options than cash options against a Houston team that ranks first in defensive rating over the last month. Ingram has averaged 1.18 DraftKings points per minute this season and 35.3 minutes per game over the last month while Williamson has averaged 1.20 DraftKings points per minute this season and 33.4 minutes per game over the last month. I typically don’t mention “tape” or things of that nature because I don’t think it is particularly useful for DFS, but I do think it’s worth mentioning that DeMarcus Cousins has had some issues in the pick-and-roll because he is too slow and gets caught in no-man’s land defending neither the roll man nor the ball-handler. About 33 percent of Ingram’s offensive possessions have been in the pick-and-roll this season and he leads the team by a wide margin with 7.5 pick-and-roll possessions per game. If you’re on the fence on a decision involving Ingram and need a tiebreaker, there you go.

Eric Bledsoe and Adams are inexpensive on FanDuel. Bledsoe has averaged 0.82 FanDuel points per minute this season and 30 minutes per game over the last month. He is also second on the team in pick-and-roll possessions. Adams has averaged 0.87 FanDuel points per minute and  29.5 minutes per game over the last month.

If you need a risky value option with a high ceiling for tournaments, Willy Hernangomez is only $3,500 on DraftKings. He has replaced Jaxson Hayes as the back-up center and is typically playing 17 or 18 minutes behind Adams. He has averaged 0.97 DraftKings points per minute in his limited playing time so far this season and has been a productive DFS producer in previous seasons as well.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Brandon Ingram ($8,500), Zion Williamson ($8,200)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Brandon Ingram ($8,900), Zion Williamson ($8,400), Eric Bledsoe ($5,100)

New York Knicks at Miami Heat (-6): 209

New York Knicks

Nerlens Noel is questionable. Taj Gibson has been serving as Mitchell Robinson’s back-up in his absence. Rose is unlikely to play tonight.

This is one of the most unappealing games on the slate as both of these teams are in the bottom third of the league in pace (with the Knicks being the slowest team in the league) and both teams are strong defensively.

Julius Randle always has tournament upside because he contributes in every category. He has averaged 1.26 DraftKings points per minute this season and leads the Knicks in usage rate, assist rate and rebounding rate. He also leads the team with 36.4 minutes per game over the last month, which is more than 3 minutes more than second place.

Elfrid Payton has played at least 30 minutes in three straight games after playing fewer than 25 minutes in five straight games. Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security, his minutes are still volatile because Immanuel Quickley is his back-up and very capable of stealing them in any one game. Payton is cheap enough that I would have some interest in a better matchup but the combination of matchup and insecure minutes makes him tough to roster tonight.

Alec Burks has come off the bench since Reggie Bullock returned to the lineup, but he often closes games — particularly when the Knicks are behind. Burks has played at least 27 minutes in three of his last four games and he has averaged 0.98 DraftKings points per minute this season. He is far from a priority in this matchup, but there is upside at his price — particularly on FanDuel where he is only $4,400.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Julius Randle ($9,100)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Julius Randle ($9,000), Alec Burks ($4,400)

Miami Heat

Goran Dragic, Avery Bradley, Maurice Harkless, Meyers Leonard and Chris Silva are still out tonight for Miami. Gabe Vincent is probable.

Kendrick Nunn joined the starting lineup last game and played 30.9 minutes with Tyler Herro coming off the bench and closing in place of Nunn. Neither player stands out in this game but, if you want to roster them, they are more favorably priced on FanDuel than on DraftKings.

Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo are more expensive than I would like in this matchup but they are always the highest upside options from Miami. Butler has averaged 1.31 DraftKings points per minute this season while Adebayo has averaged 1.26 DraftKings points per minute in the 11 games that he has played with Butler active. Both players are likely to play 34-plus minutes tonight assuming the game is competitive.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Bam Adebayo ($8,700), Jimmy Butler ($8,300)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Bam Adebayo ($8,800), Kendrick Nunn ($5,000)

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs (-1): 230

Golden State Warriors

We don’t have an injury report yet, so I’m assuming that everyone who was available last night will also be available tonight.

Stephen Curry is always the top option from the Warriors as he has averaged 1.45 DraftKings points per minute this season and has two games already with more than 55 actual points. Curry played 35.6 minutes last night and Steve Kerr reiterated after the game that Golden State would rather play Curry about 34 minutes a night than try to win games this season. That doesn’t have a huge DFS impact, but it’s worth keeping in mind that we probably won’t see games where Curry gets 38 or 39 minutes no matter how competitive.

Draymond Green has been excellent since James Wiseman’s injury. Green has averaged 1.19 DraftKings points per minute and 34.5 minutes per game in four games without Wiseman. He has a 14.9 percent usage rate, 12.9 percent rebounding rate and 40.1 percent assist rate. By comparison, he has averaged 0.84 DraftKings points per minute and 26.6 minutes per game in 16 games played with Wiseman this season. In reality, he was typically playing about 30 minutes in competitive games and his overall average is skewed by minutes restrictions and at least one ejection. Still, the increase in per-minute production without Wiseman is the important part as Green has benefitted from his move to center. His salary has increased as a result so he is only a secondary option, but we should view him differently than we have for most of the season.

Kelly Oubre and Andrew Wiggins have more minutes available with Green moving to center as well. Wiggins played 38.7 minutes last night and Oubre played 35.6 minutes. Oubre has averaged 32.7 minutes per game without Wiseman compared to 27.7 minutes per game with Wiseman active while Wiggins has averaged 33.8 minutes per game without Wiseman and 31.4 minutes per game with him. Wiggins has averaged 0.97 DraftKings points per minute this season and Oubre has averaged 0.93 DraftKings points per minute. Oubre is my preferred option between the two because his per-minute production to date is lower than I expect going forward thanks to an awful shooting start to the season.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Stephen Curry ($10,400)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Stephen Curry ($10,400)

San Antonio Spurs

We don’t have an injury report here either. LaMarcus Aldridge and Lonnie Walker were both out last night. Walker is expected back tonight. Derrick White is expected to rest tonight, so we should see Walker rejoin the starting lineup.

DeMar DeRozan and Dejounte Murray both look like strong options tonight. DeRozan has averaged 1.25 DraftKings points per minute and 35.5 minutes per game in six games without Aldridge this season. Murray’s per-minute production is hurt a bit when he plays alongside White, so he should benefit from Walker’s return in place of White. He has averaged 1.18 DraftKings points per minute in games without Aldridge this season. We shouldn’t expect a repeat of last night’s 8-steal performance, but we don’t need one for Murray to justify his salary.

Jakob Poeltl played 29.8 minutes last night. I was slightly concerned that he would lose playing time against a small Warriors’ frontcourt but the Spurs stuck with him and he produced well. Poeltl has averaged 0.94 DraftKings points per minute and 26.9 minutes per game in six starts sans Aldridge this season.

Walker, Rudy Gay and Patty Mills are all viable value options tonight — though they come with plenty of risk. Gay and Mills both closed last night’s game, with Mills playing about 28 minutes and Gay playing about 26 minutes. White played about 25 minutes and I expect those to go to Walker, who has averaged 0.72 DraftKings points per minute this season.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: DeMar DeRozan ($7,800), Dejounte Murray ($6,500)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: DeMar DeRozan ($8,300), Dejounte Murray ($6,800), Jakob Poeltl ($5,500)

Philadelphia 76ers at Sacramento Kings (+5): 230

Philadelphia 76ers

Embiid should absolutely dominate the Sacramento frontcourt. Embiid has been one of the most productive players in the league this season with 1.60 DraftKings points per minute. He leads the 76ers with a 33.8 percent usage rate and leads the starters with an 18.7 percent rebounding rate. He has also contributed a 13.7 percent assist rate. The Nets are the only team that has a worse defensive rating than the Kings over the last month and Sacramento has allowed the third most points in the paint over that time. The Kings have also allowed the most offensive rebounds and the 11th most total rebounds over the last month. For the season, Sacramento has allowed the sixth most post-up possessions per game and 13th most points per post-up possession. Embiid leads the NBA with 8.7 post-up possessions per game and ranks in the 72nd percentile in post-up efficiency.

Outside of Embiid, Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris are secondary options in the mid-range. Simmons has averaged 33.1 minutes per game over the last month and 1.19 DraftKings points per minute this season. Harris has averaged 1.11 DraftKings points per minute this season and leads the team with 34.2 minutes per game over the last month. Both players should benefit from Sacramento’s weak defense.

Seth Curry and Shake Milton have upside at inexpensive price points, though they are difficult to rely on since they aren’t primary options in the offense. Curry is one of the most efficient shooters in the league and has averaged 0.78 DraftKings points per minute this season while Milton has averaged 0.93 DraftKings points per minute. Curry’s playing time is more secure as we can be reasonably confident that he plays at least 26 to 28 minutes tonight. Milton’s playing time is less predictable, but he did play 27 minutes and close both halves against the nets last game.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Joel Embiid ($10,500)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Joel Embiid ($10,600)

Sacramento Kings

Sacramento has a tough matchup against the 76ers, who are ninth in defensive rating over the last month. The Sixers have also played at the ninth fastest pace, however, so the Kings should get more possessions to make up for the expected lack of efficiency. The Kings are also fully healthy, which makes them mostly secondary options tonight.

De’Aaron Fox leads the Kings with 1.20 DraftKings points per minute this season and he will typically play at least 34 or 35 minutes in competitive games. He is expensive, but that should keep his ownership down in tournaments.

Harrison Barnes and Buddy Hield have averaged 36.4 and 34.7 minutes per game over the last month. Barnes has been surprisingly productive this season with 0.91 DraftKings points per minute, while Hield has averaged 0.86 DraftKings points per minute. They are both priced up because of how many minutes they play, however, so they’re difficult to prioritize.

Hassan Whiteside has upside as a value center on DraftKings where we can roster two of them. We will probably only get 16 to 18 minutes from Whiteside, but he has averaged 1.19 DraftKings points per minute this season. He also would benefit if Richaun Holmes gets into foul trouble against Embiid, which is entirely possible.

Tyrese Haliburton continues to come off the bench and then close over Marvin Bagley. We typically get 28 to 32 minutes from Haliburton, who has averaged 0.98 DraftKings points per minute with a 26.6 percent assist rate this season. Haliburton is finally priced up for his new role, however, so he isn’t the same great value that he was last week.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: De’Aaron Fox ($8,800)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: De’Aaron Fox ($8,600)

Orlando Magic at Portland Trail Blazers (-6): 220

Orlando Magic

Evan Fournier is out tonight, along with Aaron Gordon and Michael Carter-Williams. Dwayne Bacon started in place of Fournier last game and played 30.5 minutes. Al-Farouq Aminu isn’t on the injury report and practiced yesterday so we could see him play for the first time this season.

Nikola Vucevic has averaged 1.46 DraftKings points per minute this season with a 34.8 percent usage rate, 17.2 percent rebounding rate and 24.3 percent assist rate in 196 minutes without either of Gordon or Fournier on the floor this season. Portland is 26th in defensive rating over the last month and Vucevic has averaged 34.3 minutes per game in 15 games played over the last month.

Cole Anthony is likely to benefit from Fournier’s absence as well since Bacon is a lower usage player than Fournier. In 146 minutes alongside Vucevic without Fournier or Gordon on the floor this season, Anthony has a 24.0 percent usage rate. While he has only averaged 0.74 DraftKings points per minute, that is in large part because he has a 34.3 percent true shooting rate compared to his 47.4 percent true shooting rate for the season. Alongside both of Fournier and Vucevic without Gordon, Anthony has a 19.6 percent usage rate so we can expect more scoring opportunities for him tonight.

Bacon is inexpensive and could see 30 minutes again, but he only has a 15.9 percent usage rate and has offered virtually no peripherals in 151 minutes alongside Vucevic without Fournier or Gordon this season so proceed with caution.

Frank Mason played 26 minutes off the bench last game, but he played the entire fourth quarter in garbage time. Neither of Vucevic or Terrence Ross played in the fourth, so I’m not convinced that we get a lot of minutes out of Mason again. That said, he did play about 3 minutes alongside Anthony in the first half. If he plays six minutes alongside Anthony and 16 minutes without Anthony on the floor, that would give us 22 minutes of a player who has averaged 0.91 DraftKings points per minute for his career. There is obviously risk here and he’s nothing more than a tournament dart throw, but there is at least a path to him succeeding as a value play.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Nikola Vucevic ($8,900), Cole Anthony ($5,900)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Nikola Vucevic ($8,700), Cole Anthony ($5,400), Terrence Ross ($4,500)

Portland Trail Blazers

Damian Lillard is probable. C.J. McCollum, Jusuf Nurkic and Nassir Little are still out.

Lillard was limited on Sunday. Terry Stotts said that his limit would be based on how he felt. Not surprisingly, Lillard felt like playing 38 minutes. We can expect more of the same tonight against Orlando. He has averaged 1.46 DraftKings points per minute with a 32.9 percent usage rate and 39.7 percent assist rate in eight games without McCollum this season. Those numbers are down from his 37.7 percent usage rate and 1.64 DraftKings points per minute in four games without McCollum last season, but they are still excellent numbers.

Enes Kanter played another 34 minutes against the Knicks on Sunday and he has now averaged 30.6 minutes per game in 10 games without Nurkic this season. He has also played at least 32 minutes in six of his last seven. Kanter has averaged 1.21 DraftKings points per minute in his games without Nurkic this season.

Nothing stands out beyond Lillard and Kanter as the other options have all been priced up to account for their increased playing time and they don’t produce at a high enough rate that I am particularly interested in paying their increased salaries.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Damian Lillard ($10,000), Enes Kanter ($7,500)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Damian Lillard ($9,800), Enes Kanter ($7,200)

Boston Celtics at Utah Jazz (-6): 220

Boston Celtics

Jaylen Brown is questionable tonight. If he sits, we will probably get another start from Grant Williams.

This is a tough matchup for the Celtics and they have one of the lowest implied totals on the slate as Utah is 24th in pace and 2nd in defensive rating over the last month. Jayson Tatum and Kemba Walker would see increased usage if Brown sits. Walker has played 32 minutes in his last couple of games so he is worth a look in tournaments even if Brown is able to play. For the season, Walker has averaged 1.08 DraftKings points per minute. He’s only a secondary option but his playing time has slowly increased recently. Walker is more favorably priced on FanDuel.

Brown looks like a secondary tournament option on DraftKings if he is able to play (and isn’t on a minutes restriction). Brown has averaged 1.28 DraftKings points per minute this season as he has taken another big step forward as an NBA player. He has averaged 1.23 DraftKings points per minute and 34.4 minutes per game in 15 games with Tatum active.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Kemba Walker ($6,600)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Kemba Walker ($5,700)

Utah Jazz

Mike Conley is out again tonight for Utah. Joe Ingles moved into the starting lineup and played 31.5 minutes in his place on Sunday.

Donovan Mitchell had a big game on Sunday and he should see increased opportunities without Conley. In 98 minutes alongside Rudy Gobert without Conley on the floor this season, Mitchell has a 32.4 percent usage rate and 29.3 percent assist rate. He has averaged 1.27 DraftKings points per minute. With Conley and Gobert both on the floor, Mitchell has averaged 1.16 DraftKings points per minute with a 30.6 percent usage rate and 19.4 percent assist rate, so we see an increase in usage and assist rate without Conley.

Ingles has averaged 0.92 DraftKings points per minute in 190 minutes alongside Mitchel without Conley this season and he should see another 30 to 32 minutes tonight. Bojan Bogdanovic has a 23.3 percent usage rate alongside Mitchell without Conley this season and played 34 minutes last game. Conley’s absence has a trickle-down effect on minutes since Utah uses several players at multiple positions and it should benefit Bogdanovic. Jordan Clarkson is an obvious beneficiary as well as he played 30 minutes and has averaged about 1.15 DraftKings points per minute this season.

Gobert shouldn’t be impacted much by Conley, but he remains reasonably priced. He has averaged 1.27 DraftKings points per minute this season with a massive 23.9 percent rebounding rate. The only issue for Gobert is that we can only expect him to play about 30 minutes.

Top DraftKings NBA DFS Picks: Donovan Mitchell ($8,100), Rudy Gobert ($7,200), Jordan Clarkson ($6,000)

Top FanDuel NBA DFS Picks: Donovan Mitchell ($8,000), Jordan Clarkson ($5,000), Joe Ingles ($4,500)
