NBA DFS Picks & Optimal Lineup Construction | Jan. 4

Derrick White, PG/SG, San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs are expected to be without Dejounte Murray once again on Tuesday. He has officially cleared health and safety protocols, but he is listed as out on the injury report due to reconditioning. Doug McDermott and Lonnie Walker IV are also listed as out, while Keita Bates-Diop is questionable.

Derrick White has had to take on a larger role for the shorthanded Spurs recently. He has increased his fantasy production to 1.17 DraftKings points per minute over the past month, and he has racked up 43.5 DraftKings points or more in three of his past five games. That includes 46.25 DraftKings points over 42.2 minutes in his last outing.

White stands out as underpriced at just $7,200 on DraftKings. As long as the Spurs remain shorthanded, White should be looking at another excellent performance against the Raptors. Expect him to grade out well in our NBA Projections.

Duane Washington Jr., PG/SG, Indiana Pacers

The game between the Pacers and Knicks does not stand out as particularly appealing from a fantasy perspective. The total opened at just 208.5 points, so offense figures to be hard to come by.

Still, the Pacers are presenting some value given their current absences. They have been decimated by injuries and COVID recently, and they have nine players listed as out on their injury report. That includes a few key players like Malcolm Brogdon, Caris LeVert, and Chris Duarte.

With that in mind, a few relative unknowns are going to have to log big minutes. Washington is one of them. He has appeared in just six games for the Pacers this season, but he has started each of the past two. He has racked up at least 29.9 minutes in both of those contests, and he has averaged 24.95 FanDuel points. That makes him a nice potential source of value at just $4,000 across the industry.

However, his potential ownership is a concern. If his ownership projection is too high, he will carry a negative leverage score in the Boom/Bust Probability tool. He could be worth some fade consideration in that situation.

Jalen Smith, PF/C, Phoenix Suns

The Suns are missing their top three center options at the moment, with Deandre Ayton, JaVale McGee, and Frank Kaminsky all sidelined with various maladies. That has allowed Smith to step into the starting lineup, and he has provided excellent value in that role. Smith has been outstanding when on the court this season, averaging 1.24 DraftKings points per minute, so it is not surprising that he has thrived with additional playing time. He has scored at least 29.75 DraftKings points in each of his past three games, including 39.0 in his last outing. Smith should be able to put together another strong performance against the Pelicans, who rank merely 24th in defensive efficiency.

Smith has displayed a nice offensive game, including the ability to hit a midrange jump shot. He has shot 61.3% from the field and 91.7% from the free throw line in his three starts.
