NBA Yahoo Cup Fantasy Basketball Picks | Round 6

NBA DFS Center: Nikola Jokic– $54

It is always nice to anchor a lineup to a stud player, and there are options tonight in that respect, but none have quite the appeal of Jokic. Despite playing 35 minutes last night, the back-to-back situation is not something to fear. Jokic has been one of the most durable players since the start of last season, playing all 72 and only missing one this year due to a suspension. The Nuggets are still missing forward Michael Porter Jr. with a back injury, and Jamal Murray is rehabbing a torn ACL. That leaves Jokic as one of the most vital players on any slate he plays.

With those players off the court this season, Jokic has a 35.5% usage rate and 2 fantasy points per minute across a 199-minute sample size. He is facing the Bulls, who are missing Nikola Vucevic due to health and safety protocol. In its last five games Chicago is 25th in both rebounds and points allowed in the paint. Jokic not only leads the NBA in touches per game, but he is also in the top 15 in points in the paint. Additionally, Jokic has one of the best post-up games in the league, as he trails only Joel Embiid in points scored in that play type. Chicago allows the fifth-most points to post-ups, and they are 28th in rebounding. Every aspect of the matchup says Jokic is going to be worth his gaudy salary on this slate.

Update – Jokic is officially questionable for this game tonight.

NBA DFS Center: Khem Birch — $10

Normally, the NBA Yahoo Cup article will have a center, a guard and a forward featured to help create a lineup, but this seven-game slate offers one of the best points-per-dollar plays at the center position. The Raptors travel to Sacramento after playing in Utah last night, and they will be missing forward O.G. Anunoby with a hip injury. Last night Birch entered the starting lineup and played 24 minutes, scoring 24.1 fantasy points. That is not bad for a player that is the minimum salary, and he helps make Jokic affordable.

It is possible that Precious Achiuwa will make it back for this game, but he has missed three straight games. Even if he does, losing Anunoby leaves the Raptors sliding Pascal Siakam into more of a forward spot, leaving minutes at the center position. Birch is averaging 22 minutes per game, and he has six paint touches per night. Sacramento is 17th in rebounding, and even though they have defended the paint well, Birch saw success in Utah, which is a difficult matchup for interior players.

Awesemo’s projections love another Raptor tonight, and Zach Brunner breaks that down further in his NBA DFS Grades & Values article today.

NBA DFS Forward: Bruce Brown — $12

The Nets will face the Magic and will be missing forward Joe Harris, which has opened more of a role for Brown. He is not going to score 20 points on any given night while Kevin Durant and James Harden are active, but he grinds his way to production. The usage is low at 12.7%, but the fantasy points per minute are 0.87, and that is what truly matters. Orlando is 19th in rebounding and 27th in defensive rating while sitting 17th in pace. The Nets are ninth, so there should be plenty of chances to find the stat sheet. The Magic are also 26th in turnovers per game, which is expected of a young team. Brown is tied for ninth in steals per game with 1.6, and those are worth 3 fantasy points. Even two would help jump him to value at his salary, which is barely over the site minimum.

Update – Durant has been ruled out for the Nets, which adds to the appeal of Brown. It also leaves Harden as one of the best players on the slate. Without Durant on the court this year, Harden has a 31.9% usage rate and 1.47 fantasy points per minute. If the questionable tag for Jokic is too concerning, it is very easy to just pivot and play Harden instead.
