The NBA Slate Starter: NBA DFS Strategy for DraftKings + FanDuel | Tuesday, 6/8

The Bucks were a complete no-show in Game 2, which made stacking the late-night hammer the only way to finish up top on Monday. All the signs were there for the Suns to have a better offensive output in this series than against the Lakers, but it was hard to compare it to the 237.5 closing total for Bucks – Nets that underwhelmed. Maybe Giannis Antetokounmpo and company will show up for Game 3, but it’s looking like easy work for Brooklyn. Let’s shift our attention to Tuesday’s two-game slate starting up at 7:30 p.m. ET and find some adequate daily fantasy basketball tips and NBA DFS picks that can take us to the top on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Only the Young Die Good

Game 1 between the 76ers and Hawks was surprising on many fronts. For one, Joel Embiid went from true game-time decision with his knee injury to a team-high 38 minutes. There were also 252 combined points in a regulation game, which is certainly an outlier considering Game 1’s mere 221 total. And most shocking of all, the Hawks were in control from start to finish despite a final score (128-124) that makes it look like the Sixers were far closer than they ever actually were.

That was, of course, in large part due to the sublime effort of one Trae Young, who overcame a similarly difficult matchup in the first round to make quick work of the Knicks. Ben Simmons was able to put the clamps down on him a bit in the second half, but the damage was already done, leading to the Hawks win. Heading into Game 2, it will be interesting to see if Matisse Thybulle receives more than his 19 minutes from Game 1 to help make life miserable for Young, as there’s no question slowing him down is the key for the 76ers going forward in this series.

But for NBA DFS purposes, a $9,200 Young is likely to be one of (if not the) highest-owned plays on the entire slate on DraftKings. So the question becomes, do you trust Young’s talent to overcome the matchup for a second straight night, or can Doc Rivers make enough adjustments to trip Young up to make a fade viable? That’s where the Boom/Bust tool at Awesemo can take a lot of the guesswork out of a decision like that, as understanding his optimal lineup appearance rate in comparison to his ownership can show you what needs to be done.

Let Mike Conley Watch Commence

The late-night hammer tonight consists of Game 1 between the Los Angeles Clippers and the top-seeded Utah Jazz, and what a series this should be. Hopefully Mike Conley can give it a go, as seeing teams lose due to key injuries is never ideal (not that the Nets would know). But regardless, Donovan Mitchell has played himself into game shape and looks poised to put up big minutes and fantasy numbers in this series.

But seriously, Conley is a gigantic question mark on this slate, as his questionable status could lead to some uncomfortable leaps of faith to be made. Should there be word he’s in or out well before tip-off of 76ers – Hawks, gamers won’t have too much to worry about. But if he’s a true game-time decision (that’s the expectation right now) and all roster spots are used up in the early game, that’s a disaster on just a two-game slate.

That’s why gamers should have a Joe Ingles and Jordan Clarkson plan in place just in case, as both would elevate to elite plays if the Conley news were announced after lock. And Mitchell is already elite, especially at only $8,200 on DraftKings. But upping exposure to him in anticipation of no Conley isn’t the worst thing in the world, as a ceiling game can be in store for him no matter what.

And although Rudy Gobert would be mostly unaffected by whichever way that news breaks, ancillary pieces like Bojan Bogdanovic and Royce O’Neale would also see slight bumps to usage. That makes them more under-the-radar tournament options, especially O’Neale, who is no longer the de facto $4,000 punt option he was at multiple points this season. At $5,100 on DraftKings and $5,500, expect his ownership to be too low as is, especially considering how extremely productive he was versus the Grizzlies in the first round.

Final Thoughts for NBA DFS Lineups

  • Kawhi Leonard has been the priority over Paul George nearly the entire season, as the price gap was never large enough to justify going away from the Clippers’ true No. 1. That might not be the case now, especially on FanDuel where Leonard sits at $11,000 and George remains under $10,000 ($9,400). Still, small forward is especially heinous today, so forcing Leonard in may still be the play.
  • John Collins is $5,600 on DraftKings, so put him in the same bucket as Young as Hawks to potentially fade in hopes the 76ers dominate this one.
  • Just play Marcus Morris.
