DraftKings + FanDuel NFL DFS Picks: Week 9 Monday Night Football | Patriots at Jets 9.5 | O/U 41.5

New England Patriots: 25.5

Quarterback

This will be the fourth game back from the Covid-19 reserve list for Cam Newton. Other than his magnificent 397 passing yard performance against the Seahawks in Week 2, the 2015 MVP has not had more than 175 yards through the air. On the flipside, he has posted 47+ rushing yards in five of his six games along with half a dozen touchdowns.

Outside of a Week 3 tilt against Philip Rivers and the Colts, New York has allowed every opposing quarterback to account for multiple touchdowns. The Jets have the second worst passing DVOA and the 10th best rushing DVOA. Additionally they just do not get much pressure on opposing signal-callers with only 11 sacks through eight games.

Wanna bet?

Alex “Awesemo” Baker’s projected stats (part of  Awesemo+) have Cam Newton projected for 51.26 rushing yards Monday night. He has 47+ in five of his six games which is going to make the  47.5 OVER at -112 on OddsShopper an intriguing deal. Running Back

Once again coach Bill Belichick is determined to mess with opponents and fantasy owners everywhere. This week 17 different players were listed as questionable for the Patriots. This includes Damien Harris along with two-thirds of the offensive line. That said, Harris is expected to play even with a limited week of practice due to an ankle injury. Sony Michel (quad) has been designated to return from the injured reserve which allows him to practice, he has not been activated from that list but still could be prior to kickoff. More likely it will be for Week 10 or 11, but hey – what a perfect time for Belichick to hoodwink everyone on a prime time island game.

Assuming it is Harris, James White and Rex Burkhead as the backfield, Harris is the clear top option if the game flow follows the logical script. The quicksand portion is the snap counts the last three weeks.

New England Snap Counts
Player Week 6 Week 7 Week 8
Rex Burkhead 18 / 32% 25 / 48% 32 / 49%
James White 31 / 54% 10 / 19% 31 / 48%
Damien Harris 12 / 21% 21 / 40% 20 / 31%
Jakob Johnson 11 / 19% 21 / 40% 16 / 25%

Harris is not even close to dominating the backfield, he just happened to have 16 carries on his 20 plays last week and 10 during his 21 snaps the week before. During this window, White has 6/8/0 on the ground with 14 targets for 11/103/0 while Burkhead has 15/52/0 rushing and five targets for 4/40/0.

Based on the projected popularity, it would make sense to roll with a preferred order of Burkhead, Harris and White. Regardless of our choices, we should prepare to just be wrong. Jakob Johnson is the fullback with just three total carries on the year. Gunner Olszewski will likely be working in as the WR3, but with the lack of pass attempts there may not be many targets going his way.

Wide Receiver

It should be no surprise that Julian Edelman (179) in Week 2 and Damiere Byrd (80) in Week 4 are the only New England players with more than 75 receiving yards in a game this season. Over the last three weeks the Patriots have attempted 25, 15 and 25 passes. Edleman is on the injured reserve and N’Keal Harry is in the concussion protocol and did not practice at all this week.

Despite the gravity of the injury situation, Jakobi Meyers seems to have become the apple of Newton’s eye. Each of the last two weeks he has lead the team in targets with 10 and 6 respectively while playing on 98% ad 79% of the snaps. Byrd has six targets in these games and he is still a viable option playing on nearly every snap this season.

Tight End

Last week Ryan Izzo was the only tight end who saw the field. Devin Asiasi and Matt LaCosse are out so that leaves Dalton Keene as the only other tight end on the roster. Izzo has 15 targets on the season and Keene has one. Yikes!

Defense/Special Teams

The Jets have allowed 3+ sacks in five of their eight games this season. Veteran Joe Flacco should be drawing the start, but that is not going to make the offensive line any better. New England has just 10 sacks this season which is the fourth lowest total this year. They do have nearly two takeaways per game which is in the top third of the league.

New York Jets: 27.5

Quarterback

Since their Week 5 bye, the Patriots have not allowed a passing touchdown and they have five interceptions. For perspective they have faced Josh Allen, Jimmy Garoppolo and Drew Lock, but still that is pretty impressive. This year New York is averaging 155.9 passing yards per game which is nearly 20 less than the Ravens and 35 less than the Patriots. They have four aerial scores and seven interceptions. We may have to be Whacko to roll with Flacco.

Running Back

Quick name the leading rusher for the J-E-T-S, jets, Jets JETS! If you said Frank Gore, congratulations! La’Mical Perine is second while Le’Veon Bell and Kalen Ballage are now on other teams. While the 37-year old Gore is third on the all-time rushing list, he is just over 1,000 yards behind Walter Payton. That of course means nothing to us tonight, well other than he is 16 years older than Perine. On a fun note, Perine is cousins with Samaje Perine and Myles Jack. This duo will be splitting the workload against the third worst rushing DVOA tonight. Ty Johnson will be lurking just to mess with all of us, but his play has been sporadic with just 10 snaps over the last three games though he has 6/57/0 on the ground and two targets in that stretch.

Wide Receiver

Chris Hogan and Josh Doctson remain out and Vyncint Smith is doubtful. There is a good chance that Jamison Crowder returns from his groin injury, though technically he is a game time decision coming off two limited practices this week. If he gets the start, he should be a target magnet for Flacco. Breshad Perriman will be returning after being cleared from the concussion protocol which means we suddenly have a crowded situation. Jeff Smith is likely the odd man out and should see reduced opportunities along with Braxton Berrios. Denzel Mims has the most draft capital invested in him, so it makes sense that he firmly stays in the mix tonight.

Tight End

Chris Herndon has been a massive disappointment this season. Over the last three games he has just three targets. Ryan Griffin and Trevon Wesco will fill in the remaining 20-25% of the snaps, but they have just 10 targets between them.

Defense/Special Teams

The Patriots offensive line has not been great and with Newton tending to hold onto the ball too long with his rushing upside, it would not be a shock for the Jets to tally a couple of sacks. New York is in the middle of the pack with 10 takeaways and surprisingly the Pats are fourth in the league with 15 turnovers.

Monday Night Football DraftKings Showdown + FanDuel Single Game NFL DFS Strategy

The rankings below are best utilized for building out single-entry and three-max lineups and also for head-to-head and three-man formats. They provide a nice barometer for player value, but for those of you who are taking the MME approach, remember that correlation with your lineups is key. This means matching a receiver or two if you have a quarterback in the Captain/MVP slot. This also works conversely with pairing a Captain/MVP pass catcher with their signal-caller.

EMac’s Week 9 Monday Night Football DraftKings + FanDuel NFL DFS Rankings

Monday Night Football Top 10 NFL DFS Picks

  1. Cam Newton: This should come as no surprise and he will likely be on 90-95% of all lineups in some fashion.
  2. Jamison Crowder: Short ball specialist with a check down quarterback.
  3. Jakobi Meyers: 16 targets in the last two weeks, don’t let the DraftKings price tag scare you away.
  4. Damiere Byrd: We get a discount from Meyers with a similarly projected upside.
  5. Joe Flacco: In his last 14 games with 25+ pass attempts he has topped 15+ fantasy points three times.
  6. Sergio Castillo/Nick Folk: Frickin’ Sam Ficken is unlikely to play so we should get Castillo for the Jets. Folk (back) did not practice on Saturday though he is expected to play.
  7. La’Mical Perine: More upside than Gore, though it is likely going to be a split workload.
  8. Denzel Mims: Flacco doesn’t throw deep often, but he is very capable if the line gives him time.
  9. Rex Burkhead/James White: I prefer both with their price and popularity discount to Harris.
  10. Frank Gore: Should see 10ish carries, can we confidently say that about Harris?

Monday Night Football Secondary NFL DFS Picks

  1. Damien Harris: This price is that of a full-time featured back. Last I checked it is still Belichick calling the shots.
  2. New England D/ST: They will be artificially popular when compared with their production for this season.
  3. Breshad Perriman: Probably third or fourth in the pecking order depending on how you want to count the running backs.
  4. Ryan Izzo: Assuming he is healthy he does have seven targets in the last three games which tops our next guy.
  5. Chris Herndon: At least he is cheap and will be on the field, just three targets in the last three games.

Monday Night Football Lottery Tickets NFL DFS Picks

  1. Braxton Berrios: If Crowder or Perriman are out, move him to the top of the Secondary section, still returning punts.
  2. New York Jets D/ST: A splash play is not completely out of the question.
  3. Gunner Olszewski: Sadly we do not get “cool name” points, likely will be returning both punts and kickoffs with some WR3 snaps.
  4. Ryan Griffin: Does just enough to warrant his own line.
  5. Jeff Smith:  Only if Crowder or Perriman are out.
  6. Dalton Keene: May be the only other healthy Patriots tight end.
  7. Isaiah Zuber, Jakob Johnson, Trevon Wesco, Kyle Dugger: Time to go buy an actual lottery ticket.
