NFL Injury Report: Week 2 Edition

With a full week in the books, the NFL injury report already featured a number of notable names heading into Week 2. Using practice reports as a guide, here is the latest injury intel in the NFL ahead of Week 2.

NFL Injury Report: Week 2 Edition

James Conner – Pittsburgh Steelers.

Suffering an ankle injury in the first half, James Conner missed the entire third and fourth quarters of Pittsburgh’s game against New York. Speaking Wednesday, coach Mike Tomlin left the light on for Conner to return this weekend. After starting the week as a non-participant, Pittsburgh actually left Conner off of their final injury report.

While Conner will suit up on Sunday, Benny Snell certainly earned his share of playing time.  Snell carried 19 times for 113 yards in Conner’s absence last week. Also missing Stefen Wisniewski, Zach Banner, and David DeCastro, this time-share looks like a potential annoyance for fantasy owners against a stout Denver Broncos defense.

Chris Godwin – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

After a seemingly healthy Week 1, Chris Godwin popped up on the Tampa Bay injury report with a concussion on Wednesday. Coach Bruce Arians already said the team plans to take a cautious approach with Godwin. While Godwin worked his way back to a limited practice at the end of the week, the Buccaneers listed him as doubtful ahead of Week 2.

With Godwin unlikely to play, Tampa Bay will rely increasingly on Mike Evans and Scotty Miller. While Evans remains the favorite to pace the Buccaneers in targets, Miller looks like a potential dart throw. Miller ran a route on 78-percent of Brady’s drop backs in Week 1, notching a 17.7-percent target share.

Kenny Golladay – Detroit Lions

After suffering a hamstring injury in practice ahead of Week 1, Kenny Golladay’s  injury appears more significant than initially thought. Golladay missed Week 1 against the Bears and already found himself rules out ahead of this weekend’s game. Not even able to take the practice field, Golladay remains week-to-week.

In his place Quintez Cephus stepped up to run a route on 74-percent of Matthew Stafford’s drop backs. More importantly, Cephus recorded ten targets and saw a team-leading 35.2-percent of Detroit’s air yards. With Green Bay looking sharp on the other side, Cephus warrants consideration in Week 2.

George Kittle – San Francisco 49ers

After suffering a knee sprain in the first half, George Kittle returned to play on an absurd 98-percent of San Francisco’s offensive snaps. Despite battling through the injury last week, the 49ers already ruled out Kittle ahead of this weekend’s tilt against the Jets.

With Deebo Samuel already on injured reserve, this 49ers team remains thin at pass catcher. Luckily, rookie Brandon Aiyuk looks set to return, providing an avenue for targets. Outside of Aiyuk, Jordan Reed remains an intriguing flier. He should draw the start at tight end in Kittle’s absence.

AJ Brown – Tennessee Titans

Suffering a knee bruise in Week 1, the Titans already ruled AJ Brown out of Week 2. Brown recorded eight targets for the Titans in their opener and his loss significantly affects the expected performance of Ryan Tannehill. Behind Brown, the Titans look likely to rely on Corey Davis, Adam Humphries, and Jonnu Smith.

Now the de facto alpha, Corey Davis also received eight target in Week 1 Left for dead by most analysts, Davis actually recorded 38-percent of Tennessee’s air yards as well. While Tennessee remains likely to lean on the run as heavy favorites over the Jaguars, Davis looks an intriguing flier for Week 2.

Jack Doyle – Indianapolis Colts

Suffering an ankle injury in Week 1, the Colts already ruled out Jack Doyle ahead of Week 2. Coach Frank Reich said it is too early to tell if Doyle will miss multiple games. Either way, the Doyle injury remains a bad sign for a Colts’ team also in danger of missing Michael Pittman.

Behind Jack Doyle, Moe Alie-Cox looks like the primary beneficiary. Trey Burton already hit injured reserve this off-season, leaving the Colts thin at tight end. More likely than anything else, Philip Rivers probably relies increasingly on TY Hilton, Parris Campbell, and the running backs against the Vikings in Week 2.

Phillip Lindsay – Denver Broncos

Leaving Week 1’s game against the Titans with a toe injury, Philip Lindsay failed to gain clearance ahead of Week 2. Vic Fangio did not update Lindsay’s status beyond this week. Lindsay failed to recorded even a limited practice, suggesting this could be a multi-week absence.

In his stead, Melvin Gordon handled an elevated workload on Monday Night Football. The former Charger finished with 18 touches on the night with three targets coming in the pass game. Despite his pedigree as a three-down ball carrier, Denver insists this will remain a committee with Royce Freeman now expected to step up. In a tough matchup against the Steelers, this looks like a mess for DFS.

Blake Jarwin – Dallas Cowboys

Suffering a season-ending injury, Blake Jarwin subsequently hit injured reserve. In his place, Dalton Schultz played a near every-down role for the Cowboys. Schultz ran a route on 53-percent of Dak Prescott’s drop backs and even recorded four targets in the pass game. This equated to a 10.8-percent target share within the offense. With Atlanta on deck and the Cowboys expected to score points, Schultz enters the conversation as a Week 2 punt play.

Marlon Mack – Indianapolis Colts

Also suffering a season-ending injury, Marlon Mack landed on injured reserve. Without Mack in the picture, the Colts figure to turn to a Nyheim Hines and Jonathan Taylor committee. Following Mack’s injury, Taylor handled 15 touches, including six targets in the pass game. While this remains a time share, Indianpolis’ matchup against a depleted Minnesota defense raises the floor for both Hines and Taylor this weekend.
