Yahoo NFL Picks: Week 9 Monday Night Football | Bears vs. Steelers Tonight

Eric MacPherson

Tonight the Pittsburgh Steelers are hosting the Chicago Bears in the featured Monday Night Football matchup, and Yahoo Fantasy is offering NFL DFS single-game contests. The general concept of creating a team remains the same, but this is a one-game player pool. The twist is that any position player can be rostered, and one is designated to receive a 1.5x multiplier on their Yahoo points. Using Awesemo’s expert NFL projections and rankings, these are the top Yahoo NFL picks for the Week 9 Monday Night Football game tonight.

Yahoo NFL Picks: Week 9 Monday Night Football

The SUPERSTAR position will get a 1.5x multiplier on their Yahoo points in the single-game format. Awesemo’s NFL DFS optimizer creates daily fantasy football cheat sheets. Check out who is popping in the Yahoo NFL DFS cheat sheet for the Week 9 Sunday Night Football game.

Najee Harris, Pittsburgh Steelers – $25

Tonight rookie Najee Harris will be on all rosters up to at least Nos. 20 to 25 on Yahoo. The Bears defense is not a pushover, but they are not world beaters either. It is clear that Ben Roethlisberger ($24) does not have it anymore, and while he is a future Hall of Famer, at 39 he has too much mileage on him to be more than a controlled passing option. That bodes well for Harris, who already has a 14-target game under his belt and should see two-dozen opportunities tonight between the ground and air. It gives him the best fantasy floor and upside, with a multi-touchdown game not out of the question.

Awesemo’s data scientist Matt Savoca says that Najee Harris’ big salary is also worth paying for on DraftKings and FanDuel in his Week 9 NFL DFS Showdown Matchup Breakdown column.

Diontae Johnson, Pittsburgh Steelers – $27

In a unique twist, Diontae Johnson is at the top of the salary list tonight, and this is the first prime-time game where no player is over $30 on Yahoo. Johnson should see double-digit targets tonight and has a reasonable chance for a touchdown. While the Yahoo half-PPR scoring format is not particularly advantageous for Johnson, he could easily end up with twice as many targets as every other wideout and tight end playing tonight. This season he has double-figure fantasy points in every game, including the three where he did not find the end zone.

Yahoo NFL Core Picks

Justin Fields, Chicago Bears – $21

Chicago is doing all it can to protect rookie Justin Fields from throwing the ball too often, and they also have been limiting his designed rushing opportunities. Last week Fields posted 26.3 Yahoo points on the strength of 10 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. That does show some upside, which is more than can be said for Roethlisberger, who has yet to crack 20 fantasy points this season. It is not all unicorns and rainbows, however, as Fields has a high water mark of 209 yards passing in his six starts. This salary is still at a forgiving level tonight, and based on raw points projections, Fields should be a top-four scorer and easily could be behind only his fellow rookie Harris.

David Montgomery, Chicago Bears – $22

If David Montgomery starts tonight, assume he has fully recovered from the hyperextended knee that landed him on the injured reserve. While rookie Khalil Herbert ($19) would still see significant snaps, he has not been particularly effective in the passing game, with only 10 targets for nine catches and 55 yards in the four games that Montgomery missed. If Montgomery is active but Herbert draws the start, temper expectations for Montgomery.

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers – $11

Yet another rookie is getting a recommendation tonight, with tight end Pat Freiermuth stepping up over the last two games. He had 14 targets for 11 catches, 102 yards and a touchdown, which is a trend in the right direction. Eric Ebron (ankle) is out, and Roethlisberger is not going to throw deep unless it is necessary. Tonight will be only the 14th game in three seasons for Zach Gentry ($10), though he did see five targets last week with Ebron sidelined. He is a contrarian pivot away from Freiermuth with a fraction of the popularity in tournaments.

Darnell Mooney, Chicago Bears $15

A lot of gamers are going to see Allen Robinson ($12) right below Darnell Mooney and think they are getting a bargain. However, that is more of a trap since Robinson has only out-targeted Mooney once in the six games that Fields has been the starter. Nobody in the Bears passing game is particularly enticing, but choosing one receiver, it may as well be Mooney tonight.

Final Thoughts

Tonight has the rare opportunity to consider skipping the quarterbacks in several lineups. Fields has been wildly inconsistent, and Roethlisberger has been consistently underwhelming. In 13 starts between them, they have combined for just 11 touchdowns passing. This is one of the lowest game totals of the season for prime time, with an implied total of 40 points. That means that any roster that lands four or five of those touchdowns will be sitting pretty at the end of the night. Yesterday was a reminder that anything can happen in an NFL game; even if a team is favored by over a touchdown at home, they still are going to lose a fair amount of the time.
