The 2021 NHL season is now over a month old, and it has been unpredictable and entertaining. Like many sports, the easiest way to maximize your ceiling is through stacking, and that couldn’t be any truer in NHL DFS. For reference, each goal averages 1.7 assists. In this article I’ll help you find the best stacks and daily fantasy hockey picks for DraftKings and FanDuel fantasy hockey lineups using Awesemo’s Top Stack Tool.
Top Stacks: Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks | March 5
Top Stack: COL1
Linemates: Nathan MacKinnon – Mikko Rantanen – Gabriel Landeskog
At $700 less than Boston’s top line and in a matchup versus a much weaker possession team in Anaheim, I am again loving the spot for the Avalanche, as does the top stack tool. With top stack percentages and leverage second only to Boston, the projected ownership relief we get at under 20% is worth its weight in gold.
The Ducks struggle mightily on the puck as a team with metrics all in the bottom five in chance creation, goals and possession. What this spells out for Colorado’s top line is compounded opportunities to score with more time on the puck. In terms of total production, this line has actually been somewhat of a disappointment with just 58 points, but it’s not due to lack of quality of play. At five-on-five alone this year, the line has created 43 high-danger chances (65%) but has converted just 4 of those opportunities, which has to regress at some point given the talent.
All things point to this line being a better play in the grand scheme of this slate with a better matchup, cheaper tags, and less ownership.
Others: LA1, VGK1

Over-Owned Stack: VGK2
Linemates: William Karlsson – Reilly Smith – Jonathan Marchessault
As is to be expected, any cheap, top-six line facing the Sharks on a small slate will be very popular in NHL DFS. That said, we need make sure we are aware of how much exposure we get to those lines in relativity to their ability to be a top stack. With over 11% projected ownership on both sites (almost 18% on DraftKings) and cheap tags, the value is obviously there. Their top-stack probability well under 10%, however, so it’s not necessary to jam them in with every line you can.
San Jose is bottom five in every defensive category known to man, so I will definitely be playing this line. But in large-field tournaments, I’ll be doing no more than matching the field to avoid being duped.
Awesemo’s Top 2 Stack Percentage: 7.9%
Awesemo’s Ownership Projection: 14.4%
Leverage: -6.5%
Value Stacks: TB3, STL3
*Editor’s Note: Keep an eye out for line changes and updates, especially for TB and ARI.
