DraftKings and FanDuel NHL DFS Power Plays, Saturday 3/23

This Saturday feeds us a large slate. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow on this edition of NHL Power Plays. DFS players take notice of any and all changes.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

A Quick Note Or Two…

The picks below cover the Saturday evening slate which is ten games in all for DraftKings (7:00 PM ET lock). There is a four-game afternoon slate starting at 1:00 PM ET. Also, Fantasy Hockey X featured prominently as always as we take a “fireside chat” approach to fantasy hockey.

Full Schedule For Saturday, March 23, 2019

Prices are in DraftKings format unless noted. FanDuel prices will be included as well.

NHL DFS GPP Plays For Saturday

High Priced Shots

Aleksander Barkov ($7,700) — Barkov is only $8,200 on FanDuel which is a good value given that he has 20 points in his last ten games. Boston is good defensively, allowing the 5th least DFS points to centers. However, the Panthers’ pivot has five points in two meetings against Boston this year and the Bruins have had few answers slowing him down. Florida averages nearly 3.5 goals per game and converts 28% of their power-play chances at home. This could be a surprise play that few see coming. Do not let the expensive price tag throw you off! Brayden Point is a solid option taking a slight step downward in price. Auston Matthews will be a virtual must play against a New York Rangers team that cannot stop a cold much less an offense like Toronto’s.

Saturday Lock?

Nikita Kucherov ($7,600) — The Tampa Bay Lightning are in for a battle against St. Louis on Saturday night, but Kucherov may fare better on the road for this one. St. Louis allows several more shots and chances a game at home than they do on the road. Kucherov tallied seven goals and 16 points in the last ten games. Also, this includes 42 shots on net in nearly 70 attempts. Kucherov’s price on FanDuel is a bit cost prohibitive at $9,400 but honestly, he is hard to shy away from. There are ways to differentiate the stack to bring prices down. Mitch Marner and Mark Stone represent cheaper options that feature favorable matchups on Saturday night. They also will not break your bank as much.

Mark Giordano ($6.200) — Giordanohas points in four straight games and has a nice floor when it comes to shots and blocks. Vancouver has lots to play for and so does Calgary. They want to clinch a division spot and the West as soon as possible. The Canucks have been stingy on the defense of late allowing 11 goals but Calgary can score anywhere and everywhere. Season wise, Vancouver allows three goals a game at home and that number rises a bit when facing the Flames. Giordano is a great play but so is Victor Hedman tonight and maybe even Shea Weber. Weber is up against a Buffalo team that has mailed it in defensively and could allow 35-40+ shots.

FanDuel Risky Play (FanDuel Price in parentheses)

Jonathan Marchessault ($7,000) — Marchessault has seven points in his last three games and looks like the force he was last year for Vegas. So, does Reilly Smith, so those two could be a nice stacking option as well. Vegas having two stacking options on Saturday night against one of the worst penalty kills in the league gives you multiple ways to attack this game. Vegas carries a team over/under of 3.5 and could easily hit. However, it will be a question of which line gets enough points. Remember, when paying up, one real-world point is typically not enough unless there’s a high shot output. Did we mention William Karlsson is just $5,100 on DraftKings? Okay, now we did.

Into The Middle

Mikael Backlund ($5,600) — Overall, Backlund has 30 shots in his previous ten contests. Points have come in three straight and this clash with Winnipeg is another prime opportunity for that “3M line”. This game expects to be higher-scoring and at least high-event. The kicker is his FanDuel price is still only $6,000. David Krejci is viable because of line matching on Saturday night. Shop around in this bracket as even Anze Kopitar has nine points in his last nine games with four goals. He is under $5,000 and will not be high-owned against a tired Anaheim team.

Rickard Rakell ($5,100) — Rakell is a solid tournament play and even cash play in some cases because of his shot potential against Los Angeles. He had 32 shots in his last ten games and it comes down to him getting chances. If Rakell gets chances on net, points should come. The winger has nine points in his last nine games and finally looks healthy for the first time all year. He expects to enjoy a matchup against the slowest Los Angeles has to offer. He is a power-play threat against the Kings and their putrid 75% penalty kill. Also, Jakob Silfverberg is in play for a mini stacking option. Players that have been underpriced all year often come through as the string is being played out. Expect quite a few scoring chances from the late games.

DraftKings Friendly/FanDuel Too

Ryan Donato ($4,200) — Donato is a bit of a risk but in Minnesota, he is firing more pucks on net (31 in his previous ten starts). The eight points in nine games is a bonus. Donato is just $3,800 still on FanDuel which is shocking given his production since he was traded to Minnesota.

DraftKings Value Plays

William Nylander ($4,400) —  Nylander’s price is too low because of the awful start after holding out. However, this is easily a player who can average 3/4 point a game. Playing with the talent he does help but Nylander generates chances by himself as well. Also, expect a few more chances on the power play as well. The New York Rangers have allowed over four goals a game on the road since January 1st and over 38 shots per 60. Nylander hitting his floor and value almost seems like a certainty.

Throwing Some Darts

Jeff Carter ($3,400) — Carter has points in two of his last three games and faces a familiar foe in Anaheim too. The Ducks are not the most mobile of teams which should help Carter who has lost a step or two this season. His shot is still pretty good though and the Ducks could tire out in what will be a physical battle. His FanDuel price is basically an extreme value play as well.

Ryan Strome ($3,400) — Strome playing top-line minutes with Mika Zibanejad doesn’t hurt, and he is dirt cheap. Toronto is allowing well over three goals a game in their last eight contests helps this become a viable play. The expectations for a combined goal total close to seven keeps Strome in the must play category among values. Strome tallied four goals in his last eight games as well on nearly two shots a game. That is not terrible given the near punt-play price tag.

Zach Bogosian ($4,000) — Searching for value on defense feels like a quest through a swamp. However, this becomes a punt play in the purest form. Bogosian should get a lot of chances to block shots as Buffalo is increasingly allowing more and more shots. His potential for 3+ shots and 3+ blocks is moderate in Montreal. Consequently, this is because Montreal is third at home in shots per 60. Bogosian sees penalty kill time as well and Montreal loves to shoot from the point so the chance of even more blocked shots elevates.

Goading The Goalies

Looking towards the lesser games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. Can teams on no rest pick up enough shots to make rested teams look viable? Anton Khudobin is an intriguing GPP choice against a Pittsburgh team that can pile up some chances. Frederik Andersen will be an easy choice for cash goalie given a good chance to win along with Marc-Andre Fleury (if he returns) against Detroit.

Watch to see who starts whom. That is always a last minute coin flip. Carey Price and Petr Mrazek have distinct home advantages against teams that have trouble generating chances on the road. There are plenty of questions to sort out before the 7 pm EDT lock.

The slate offers up a few ways to get fancy. Value is surprisingly abundant even in net.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later. The key for Saturday is this. Wait till confirmation and then warm-ups in some scenarios. Just trust us here.

Best of luck on Saturday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise.
