DraftKings and FanDuel NHL DFS Power Plays, Saturday 3/16

This Saturday feeds us a large slate. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow on this edition of NHL Power Plays. DFS players take notice of any and all changes.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

A Quick Note Or Two…

The picks below cover the Saturday evening slate which is nine games in all for DraftKings (7:00 PM ET lock). There is a three-game afternoon slate starting at 3:00 PM ET. Also, Fantasy Hockey X featured prominently as always as we take a “fireside chat” approach to fantasy hockey.

Full Schedule For Saturday, March 16, 2019

Prices are in DraftKings format unless noted. FanDuel prices will be included as well.

NHL DFS GPP Plays For Saturday

High Priced Shots

Auston Matthews ($7,700) — The play will be higher-owned because it is simply Ottawa. Matthews is only $8,000 which is a good value given that he had nine shot attempts from the slot last night alone. Ottawa features one of the worst defenses in the league and the center should be able to find many open areas to exploit. William Nylander will be by his side which makes him a good, stacking option. Toronto may be struggling mightily defensively but the offense is on solid ground. Fortunately, Matthews picking up the slack with 41 shots on 75 attempts in the last ten games has helped. Do not forget about Sebastian Aho and Jack Eichel. That should be some battle.

Saturday Lock?

Nikita Kucherov ($7,600) — The Tampa Bay Lightning are -190 favorites against Washington on Saturday night. Kucherov costs $9,400 on FanDuel but he will have to be played in some lineups. The winger tallied six goals and 16 points in his last ten contests. Expect ownership to mushroom but if one plays multiple lines, Kucherov has to have a place in a few of them. Washington plays so deficiently on defense that most AHL teams could score on them (nearly 3.5 goals per game allowed over the past month). Do not let their last five games fool you. There exist other places to look for plays. Leon Draisaitl scoring goals at his rate make him a must play as well and is cheaper than Connor McDavid and Kucherov. Ottawa and Arizona hold some value that most may not explore as well. Ottawa is playing a Toronto team that looks lost and not rested. That could be a good game to stack because the expected goal total combined is over 7!

Shea Weber ($6.100) — Simply, the idea is to keep jamming Weber out there. His floor is nearly four shots a game and 2.5 blocks a night over the last ten contests. Chicago provides a good matchup tonight as they play a frenetic pace open for transition and blasts from the point. His $5,700 FanDuel price tag is solid enough. If his price and points per game seem risky, then there is Victor Hedman or Erik Gustafsson around the same price point. The big key on Saturday appears to be fitting the core pieces in and then patching holes as lines shift. Watch for injuries and illness.

FanDuel Risky Play (FanDuel Price in parentheses)

Brendan Gallagher ($7,100) — Gallagher holds risk because he has not scored a goal in four games. However, he has 16 shots on 30 attempts in that span. Do note that Chicago has been spreading its ice time around to keep players fresher for the stretch run. Expect more opportunities for Gallagher against one of the worst penalty kills in the last five seasons. For GPP’s, Gallagher is a 30-goal scorer who carries sneaky value on a night where he will be overlooked.

Into The Middle

Mikael Backlund ($5,700) — Stacked on the blazing trail that Mathew Tkachuk is riding on has helped Backlund in the last three games. Overall, he has 32 shots in his previous ten contests. Points have come in three straight and this clash with Winnipeg is another prime opportunity for that “3M line”. This game expects to be higher-scoring and at least high-event. The kicker is his FanDuel price is still only $5,700. Hey, if the price is going to remain stagnant enough, the play becomes a better one. Boone Jenner is like a poor man’s Backlund and he is only $4,100 on DraftKings. Did we mention he has a pretty good matchup too? David Krejci becomes a viable play because of line matching on Saturday night.

Josh Anderson ($4,700) — Anderson presents as a solid tournament play and even cash play in some cases because of his shot potential against Boston. He had 19 shots in his last four games and it comes down to him getting chances. If Anderson gets chances on net, points should come. The winger, playing with Boone Jenner, makes for a cheap mini-stack here. They also were a major thorn in their last clash against the Boston Bruins. That four-point effort was no fluke. Boston has a tough time against lines which can match and exceed their “heavy play”. Vinnie Hinostroza is another good option from Arizona and still priced a little lower than market value would dictate.

DraftKings Friendly/FanDuel Too

Tyler Johnson ($4,500) — Johnson has points in his last two games and as long as he plays in the top-six, he commands value. Johnson thrives on the work of others while getting into scoring positions. This allows him to get results but more importantly, is stack friendly against a porous Washington defense. Washington yields the third most high-danger chances per 60 in the league. Their penalty kill is also suspect while Tampa Bay converts at around a 30% rate!

DraftKings Super Value Play

William Nylander ($3,900) — Nylander, as mentioned above, complements Auston Matthews well as they can pivot around the center of the ice and twirl around the opposition. Nylander’s price is too low because of the awful start after holding out. However, this is easily a player who can average 3/4 point a game. Playing with the talent he does help but Nylander generates chances by himself as well. Also, expect a few more chances on the power play as well. Ottawa is one of the worst three or four teams in the league at home on the penalty kill.

Throwing Some Darts

Brendan Perlini ($3,800) — Perlini scoring like Patrick Kane is not expected but take advantage of the run while one can. His price will start creeping up if he keeps up. The matchup is not quite as optimal tonight but as long as Chicago plays this pace, the risk gets minimized some.

Conor Sheary ($3,900) — Sheary playing below expectations hurt many fantasy teams but not all hope is lost. He tallied seven points in his last nine games and looks like a punt play tonight against a Carolina team that gives up point-blank chances. This goes beyond simple numbers. Look at cheaper Ottawa and Arizona options below Sheary if one is looking for punt plays.

Erik Cernak ($3,800) — Searching for value on defense feels like a quest through a swamp. However, this becomes a punt play in the purest form. Cernak’s price is coming up but only because it was around $3,000 on DraftKings and below $4,000 on FanDuel. He assisted on goals in two of his last games and has been able to skate into the offensive zone with more frequency. He has 3+ blocks in two of his last three games as well which is great for a value defenseman.

Goading The Goalies

Again, our best bet with this slate is to simply wait for confirmations to come in. The problem lies in that there are no confirmations so far. Morning skates reveal a few more but alas sometimes the wait can be right until warm-ups on a moderate Saturday night slate. Looking towards the lesser games tonight might actually pay off in GPP’s. Can teams on no rest pick up enough shots to make rested teams look viable? Darcy Kuemper is high-priced now based on his hot streak. He is home against Edmonton and Arizona has been yielding 30+ shots more often lately.

Watch to see who starts whom. That is always a last minute coin flip. Also, wait to see who starts for Tampa Bay. That is not set in stone. Furthermore, those are the chalk goalies with little doubt. Does Boston get revenge tonight? That seems dicey. Who starts for Carolina and can they be trusted? There are plenty of questions to sort out before the 7 pm EDT lock.

The slate offers up a few ways to get fancy. Value is surprisingly abundant even in net.

More picks and choices will be available on Slack and social media later. The key for Saturday is this. Wait till confirmation and then warm-ups in some scenarios. Just trust us here.

Best of luck on Saturday! This expects to feature a lot of unexpected, slate wise.
