NHL DFS Picks: Centers
Nathan MacKinnon: DraftKings, $8,600; FanDuel: $9,200
MacKinnon has been hotter than the Fourth of July. Over the last 10 games, MacKinnon has averaged two real points and almost five shots per game. With Mikko Rantanen back in action for the Avalanche, you can expect even more scoring chances for the Avs top line. Together the duo carried a 54.72 CF%, while creating 37 shots per 60 and almost 12 high-danger chances. The Avalanche top line will surely be popular and with only four games on the slate, you should try to find some differentiation. After all, the Avs top line will match up with the John Tavares line, who now has Mitch Marner back, and it won’t be a cakewalk. But we all know that MacKinnon is matchup-proof.
Other high-priced players like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews are squarely in play tonight as well, and could make nice pivots from the popular MacKinnon.
Lars Eller: DraftKings, $4,700; FanDuel: $4,800
Eller has been consistently getting pucks to the net, averaging three shots per game with 18 minutes of ice time. He’s playing on the second line between Jakub Vrana and T.J. Oshie, but he splits off on the power play and pivots the second unit. The Kings have struggled in special teams situations this year, they have the 28th-ranked penalty kill. Eller should match up with the Jeff Carter line most of the night, and they have allowed over 12 high-danger scoring chances per 60.
NHL DFS PICKS: WINGER
William Nylander: DraftKings, $5,800; FanDuel: $5,900
Nylander’s production has increased over the past 10 games. He’s tallied seven points, and he’s averaging almost four shots on goal per game in that time. The Leafs top line has been great offensively, with a 58 CF%, creating over 40 shots attempts per 60, and 15 high-danger chances. Nylander should see the Nazem Kadri line to most tonight, and although he is known to be a decent two-way pivot, Kadri’s line is still vulnerable. Colorado is allowing the ninth-most shots against per game and they have a bottom-10 penalty kill. Depending on ownership, I’ll be giving the Leafs top line some heavy consideration.
Anthony Duclair: DraftKings, $4,500; FanDuel: $4,500
Anthony Duclair at $4,500 is a nice mid-tier play with upside. Duclair is playing on the top line with Brady Tkachuk and Logan Brown. He is averaging 17 minutes of ice time, and he will get top power play run. Over the last 10 games, the young winger has tallied seven points and he’s averaging over three shots per game. He should match up with the Connor McDavid line tonight, and since the Oilers have swapped lines and we don’t have a large sample of the line, we know that the pace that McDavid plays at causes turnovers and chances at the other end. Ottawa’s top line has been just as productive numbers-wise as the Leafs top line, and $5,000 cheaper.
NHL DFS PICKS: DEFENSEMEN
At the top, it’s hard to argue against any of the high-priced blue liners. They all bring plenty of production to lineups. I would say if you’re looking to stack up a line, try to get some differentiation by adding in a higher-priced blue liner that will play on the power play with your stacks. Kris Letang ($5,800/$6,800) has had the itch to shoot the puck lately, averaging over five shots/blocks per game, and logging over 25 minutes of ice time.
Value-wise, there are plenty of options as well. Sean Walker ($3,600/$4,100) has been averaging 20 minutes of ice time with almost four shots/blocks per game over the last 10 and he will get the second power play duties.
Moving lower, Samuel Girard ($3,100/$3,700) will also see second power play duties, but I think I’d rather move to Ryan Graves ($3,300/$3,800), who has been very productive in the minutes he does see. Over the last 10 games, Graves has averaged over four shots/blocks per game and with the matchup against the Leafs, he could have a chance at the combo meal.
STACKS
Ottawa 1: Brady Tkachuk – Logan Brown – Anthony Duclair
Ottawa’s top line has been very good offensively. They carry a 57 CF%, while creating almost 40 shots for per 60, and 17 high-danger chances. For a total of $12,700, they are a great price and they fully correlate on the top power play. Even though Edmonton has been good on the penalty kill, they have still been shorthanded the 11th-most often. If the Senators see a couple extra man advantages, they could capitalize.
Colorado 1: Mikko Rantanen – Nathan MacKinnon – Joonas Donskoi
The Avalanche will be chalk tonight, but it’s for a good reason. They have been production monsters, and Nathan MacKinnon is on another level. They fully correlate on the top power play unit, and the Leafs have struggled on the penalty kill. This year, Toronto has gone short-handed over three times per game, and they have the 26th-ranked penalty kill. This game should have a ridiculously fast pace and chances will be plentiful. That plays right into Nathan MacKinnon’s hands.
