NHL DFS Picks: Top Stacks for DraftKings & FanDuel | March 13

NHL DFS Picks: Center

Brock Nelson (NYI vs. NJ)

DraftKings – $4,800

FanDuel – $5,400

One thing to do here is to just roster Nelson. This is simple. Do not overthink it. Even without Anders Lee, the Islanders dominate the New Jersey Devils with a system New Jersey used forever. Tight, hard checking, then pounce with counter attacks. Nelson does this well and honestly, the venue matters little here. New Jersey has won just twice all year at home. They are a team looking to the trade deadline in four weeks rather than the games on the ice at times. The Islanders’ center is on a four-game goal streak and five-game point streak. There is little need to shut down when the other team shuts down itself. Nelson will see more power-play time, too, and New Jersey is dead last on the penalty kill by more than 5% over any other team at home.

Evgeni Malkin (PIT at BUF)

DraftKings – $6,200

FanDuel – $7,700

Malkin is back! That’s right! The center has 11 points and four goals in his previous 10 games. The shot chances are elevated. Pittsburgh plays the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Buffalo is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to expected offense, defense, etc. from the East Division. There is one slight concern with lots of nights of one and two shots but Malkin is as much a facilitator in this lineup. That will be big on a night like this where the chances Buffalo allows three-plus goals is astronomical.

If one wants to climb down value wise, there are centers like Tomas Hertl ($3,400) on DraftKings is still just $5,700 on FanDuel. With his return, San Jose trounced Anaheim 6-0 last night. He is an easy value-play option on Saturday night as an alternative for those who want some wiggle room salary wise.

NHL DFS Picks: Winger

Patrick Kane (CHI vs FLA)

DraftKings – $7,600

FanDuel – $8,400

One of my favorite notes about Kane is that he is as hot as Leon Draisaitl and maybe hotter. He benefits from playing with Alex DeBrincat who is averaging almost 0.65 goals per game. The two feed masterfully off of each other and have a better matchup against the Alex Barkov line than most would think. Four goals and 17 points in his previous 10 games with potential for even better production is too hard to say no to.

The shot volume is still solid, producing over 3.5 shots per game and the shot bonus is in play – and the matchup against the Panthers. That second part is Florida goaltenders have been leaky of late, giving up three-plus goals in several unexpected outcomes. Yes, one can match up against Kane for offense, which adds to the stacking possibilities on both sides here on Saturday night.

Frank Vatrano (FLA vs CHI)

DraftKings – $4,300

FanDuel – $4,200

It is always worrisome when recommending Vatrano but the winger is seeing more top-6 time lately and there are ways to bridge the winger to other stacks on Florida against a Chicago defense that loves to bleed scoring chances on the road especially. Chicago plays an entertaining style, for better or for worse, especially with Patrick Kane is on the ice. Vatrano has five goals and 32 shots on goal in his previous nine games. Expect him to play more than the 12 minutes a game he has averaged over the last three games (all road games). The last line change should allow Florida to utilize him in more advantageous situations and maybe even the second power-play unit.

The idea remains to explore around value tiers on Saturday night. Anthony Beauvillier against New Jersey, Even Trevor Zegras remains an aggressive, risky play on Saturday against San Jose. The Sharks’ consistency is inconsistency. That feels like the idea to look at matchups to exploit. Vancouver’s wingers against Edmonton’s goalie for example.

NHL DFS Picks: Defense

Mattias Ekholm (NSH at TB)

DraftKings – $5,300

FanDuel – $4,300

Roman Josi is out of the lineup tonight, Ryan Ellis is still on the injured reserve, and now Dante Fabbro is out for one more game. Ekholm remains the last man standing on the Nashville blue line, and even with Fabbro in the lineup last game, Ekholm expects to play 25-plus minutes against Tampa Bay and has a willingness to shoot the puck like he used to. With the level of minutes he’s expected to play, he seems a lock over on FanDuel regardless of format. It is more of a conversation on DraftKings given where his price is, but anyone wanting to roster a guy who is a threat for 30 minutes and the shot-block bonus at minimum don’t have to look much further. Also, his price on DraftKings slid down a few hundred despite a good point night. Take advantage against a Tampa Bay team that is due for some regression defensively in all phases.

Alec Martinez (VGK vs. STL)

DraftKings – $4,600

FanDuel – $3,900

Martinez is my favorite one-off when he is in the lineup and especially on a back-to-back scenario. Vegas plays a limited amount of defensemen and utilize those defensemen differently. This means more minutes for the defender and higher point, chance, and yes blocked shots and shots potentials. He has five points in his last nine games and points in two straight. Martinez enjoys little offensive bursts like this and has the talent to keep that going against an inconsistent St. Louis Blues team. St. Louis gives as good as they get. See last night as evidence. Could another 5-4 result be in the cards? That exists as a possibility. For the low prices, why not take another turn with Martinez.

For another alternative, Ryan Pulock has 12 assists in 27 games with a booming shot against the league’s worst penalty kill in New Jersey. Oh, New Jersey is among the three worst teams in unblocked shot attempts from the point at home. Pulock is slightly more expensive than Martinez but could exceed value again on Saturday.

Top Goalies

Jacob Markstrom (CGY vs. MTL)

DraftKings – $7,800

FanDuel – $7,500

This is a good matchup for Markstrom again. Montreal is in town on a back-to-back on the road after having played a late game in Vancouver last night. The Canadiens are third by shots for per 60 minutes over the last month, while Calgary is 29th by shots allowed per 60 minutes in the same span. This is a matchup of a team that allows a lot of shots (Calgary) against a team that takes a lot (Montreal), yet that team doesn’t have a good power play (Montreal’s is 13th by goals over the last month, and that could drop further). Markstrom is a target tonight, particularly on DraftKings and even FanDuel too.

What happened on Thursday night as an aberration. Markstrom faces at least 30 shots tonight as opposed to the 18 he saw on Thursday night. Other high-volume targets could include Kevin Lankinen (if he starts), and maybe Connor Hellebuyck.

Top Stacks

PIT1: Crosby – Guentzel – Rust

Pittsburgh’s top line this year has been excellent this year, posting a 56.8% expected-goal share, 3.3 goals per 60 minutes and a 73.5% actual-goal share. Tonight they get that awful Buffalo top-6. It is a game that favors Pittsburgh heavily, and that makes them a target for tonight. By our Top Stacks tool, the Crosby line has a greater chance of smashing the slate than their ownership (near 15-20% on our first run), so the larger slate and McDavid-Draisaitl may help tonight.

NYI2: Nelson – Beauvillier – Bailey

There are probably two Islander lines in play tonight, but the second line has been great since Beauvillier returned, posting a near 60% expected-goal share and 80-plus% actual-goal share. As mentioned, this line matching has given these guys some more ice time, as Bailey has gained about a minute of ice time a game over the last 10 contests. They are cheap as well, which makes them a nice filler for the more expensive stacks elsewhere. With the ten game slate, ownership could still be high but do watch to see with Lee out, if Trotz changes up the lines a bit in warmups.
