NHL DFS PICKS: Power Plays for DraftKings & FanDuel, 3-8-20

Sundays are usually a mixed bag when it come to NHL DFS and today is no different. At least DraftKings decided to make the lock an hour early and give us a full slate of six games. Finding news on Sunday is next to impossible because half the teams are playing on the hind end of a back to back. Keep an eye out for news with my Twitter list or check in to our premium Slack where we will keep you in tune. In today’s Power Plays article, I will be breaking down the slate and giving you some of my top picks at each position, including Nikita Kucherov and Nathan MacKinnon, as well as some of my favorite line stacks.

NHL DFS Picks: Centers

Nathan MacKinnon (COL at SJ) – DraftKings, $8,500; FanDuel, $9,000

MacKinnon is one of the most consistent shot producers in the league, averaging the shot bonus over the last 10 games. The Avalanche will look to take advantage of San Jose as they play on the hind end of a back-to-back after losing 2-1 in overtime to the Senators last night. The Sharks have played better recently but they are still struggling with their goaltending. Colorado is taking the most shots per game in the league, and even though the Sharks penalty kill has been great, they are taking a ton of penalties. Getting exposure to MacKinnon in a game where he will see added time on the power play is always a good idea.

Boone Jenner (CBJ at VAN) – DraftKings, $4,900; FanDuel, $4,400

I think this game has some sneaky appeal to it. The Blue Jackets are struggling to hold onto a playoff position while the Canucks have struggled over the last 10 games, giving up 3.5 goals per game. These teams met last week and it was a decent shootout with the Jackets winning 5-3. Jenner only has four points in the last 10, but his shot volume is still solid, averaging just under four shots per game. Since the All-Star break, the Canucks have the seventh-worst penalty kill with a 78% kill rate. Jenner won’t see the top power play like his line mates will, but he will get some time on the second unit. The ownership should be pretty low on the Jackets tonight and Jenner could help you get a little contrarian on this semi-short slate.

NHL DFS Picks: Wingers

Nikita Kucherov (TB at DET) – DraftKings, $8,000; FanDuel, $ N/A

Kucherov and the Lightning are guaranteed to be the chalk of the night. It’s going to be tough to fade them as the matchup is too good. Detroit has been the worst team in the league by far. They have the worst Corsi, are allowing the most high-danger chances and they have been short-handed the sixth most since the break. Kucherov is going to get an ample amount of chances tonight, and if you are looking to swerve off of him for ownership reasons, maybe look to the second line pivot Anthony Cirelli. Cirelli will get the better matchup as the Dylan Larkin line will surely hard match Kucherov. Still, it’s a hard fade for me.

Kevin Fiala (MIN at ANH) – DraftKings, $6,900; FanDuel, $6,300

Fiala has been on a terror and his salary has risen because of it. The winger has tallied 14 points in the last 10 games while averaging four shots per game. He’s also seen a noticeable boost in ice time, playing over 19 minutes in three of the last four games. Anaheim has been a pretty inconsistent team all year, but that’s going to happen during a rebuild. The Ducks are in the bottom 10 of every metric we look at for NHL DFS. And over the last 10 games, Anaheim has the second-worst team Corsi, the second-worst expected goals against and are giving up the third-most high-danger chances. It’s been tough to stack the Wild this year as they just don’t put a ton of goals on the board, but this is a decent spot.

Tyler Toffoli (VAN vs. CBJ) – DraftKings, $5,900; FanDuel, $5,500

Shot volume is king in NHL DFS and Toffoli doesn’t shy away from that. Over the last 10 games, Toffoli is averaging four shots per game. The Canucks second line as a whole has really good metrics. Together they have a 56 CF% while creating 40 shots, 32 scoring chances, 14 high-danger chances and 3.45 expected goals per 60. The Blue Jackets have dealt with injury after injury, and losing Seth Jones has hurt their defensive end. Over the last 10 games, Columbus is allowing 3.8 goals per game and they have given up over three goals in their past 12. With last change, look for the Canucks second line to find the positive matchups and create plenty of scoring chances.

NHL DFS Picks: Defensemen

Brent Burns (SJ vs. COL) – DraftKings, $7,500; FanDuel, $6,600

Burns doesn’t really need any introduction. He’s logging over 27 minutes a night, with a floor of over six shots/blocks per game. He hasn’t lit the lamp in quite a while, but he’s still averaging almost 15 DraftKings points a night. This game should have great pace with chances on both ends of the ice and Burns figures to be in the middle of the action.

Matt Dumba (MIN at ANH) – DraftKings, $5,100; FanDuel, $3,700

It might be a Dumba night, but don’t tell our own Jake Hari that. Dumba has gone five games pointless, but he’s still logging over 22 minutes a night and he’s the trigger man on the second power play. Since the All-Star break, the Ducks have been short-handed the seventh most and they have struggled to kill penalties with the seventh-worst penalty kill. Dumba is in play for me tonight and I’ll have some exposure.
