NHL DFS Picks, Tops Stacks & Lineup Optimizer Plays
Center
Anze Kopitar (LAK at OTT): DraftKings – $7,400 | FanDuel – $8,300
On a night where there could be focused ownership on a couple high-total teams like Boston and Washington, swerving to the Kings could be a good move. Yes, Kopitar has an inflated price here, but given the position and his recent play, the tag is more digestible. Kopitar has found the fountain of youth, averaging 4.5 shots/blocks per game over the last ten. He is logging over 21 minutes of ice time on a nightly basis, and he gets a decent matchup on the road tonight. Ottawa has been awful on the defensive side, giving up 3.58 goals per game and ranking 29th in Corsi, 23rd in expected goals against and 25th in scoring chances allowed. Although the Senators have been disciplined by not taking a lot of penalties, they still have the 28th-ranked penalty kill, with a 71.9% rate. Finally, the Senators are dealing with a couple COVID cases, and it is possible there are more players to be pulled from play before the game, so keep an eye on the news.
Sam Bennett (FLA at PIT): DraftKings – $5,400 | FanDuel – $6,400
On salary alone, Bennett makes for a solid point-per-dollar play. He will play on the second line with Jonathan Huberdeau, and they will also line up on the top power play together, along with Aleksander Barkov. Not that the power-play exposure is the key to playing Bennett because the Penguins penalty kill has been phenomenal, but exposure to Barkov is always a good thing. At even strength the Penguins will likely use the Jeff Carter line against the Bennett line, and that is a winnable matchup. Florida’s second line has been extremely good possession- and metrics-wise. The trio carries a 62% Corsi-for and 3.33 expected goals per 60.
J.T. Compher (COL vs. VAN): DraftKings – $5,400 | FanDuel – $5,300
With Nathan MacKinnon sidelined, Compher will step up and fill that first-line center role. He will be lining up between Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog, who can fill the net up in a hurry. Vancouver has been a team to target going back to last season, and tonight is no different. Vegas also agrees, as they have the Avalanche as the biggest favorite on the board tonight (-215). The Canucks have been a middling team on defense to open the year up, but their penalty kill has struggled a ton. On the season Vancouver has the 30th-ranked penalty kill, with a 65% rate. In the past Compher walked right into the MacKinnon role on the power play as well, and although he does not shoot as much as Mackinnon, he still gets plenty of looks. Colorado will also get last change, giving Compher and company the plus matchups when offense is needed.
Wingers
Alex Ovechkin (WSH at DET): DraftKings – $9,300 | $9,500
Ovechkin is in the slam spot of the night. His ownership will likely be inflated because of it, but rightfully so. He is averaging the shot-on-goal bonus and just under 2 real points a game. Ovechkin has three multi-point games in the last five and gets a great spot to light the lamp tonight too. Over the last 10 games at even strength, Detroit ranks 28th in Corsi, 31st in expected goals against, 30th in scoring chances against and 32nd in high-danger chances allowed. Add in Detroit spending a lot of time in the box and their 26th-ranked penalty kill, and there are multiple paths to success for Ovechkin tonight.
Ovechkin showed up as one of the best overall plays in our NHL DFS lineup optimizer today. Check out Awesemo’s DraftKings NHL cheat sheet and FanDuel NHL cheat sheet for free daily fantasy hockey picks and optimal lineups.
David Pastrnak (BOS vs. EDM): DraftKings – $8,300 | FanDuel – $8,400
Pastrnak has been a volume shooter for most of his career. He is a crafty sniper that can light the lamp in a hurry, averaging 4.5 shots per game, and he has hit the shot bonus five out the last 10 games. Boston’s top line is ridiculously good, but they are also priced as much at $23,800. Edmonton will match the McDavid line up with the Bruins top line, and that is still a plus matchup. Connor McDavid and company play with a ton of speed, and they can create chances, but they also make a lot of mistakes and turn the puck over a lot. Since opening the season Edmonton has struggled defensively. The Oilers rank 21st in Corsi, 25th in expected goals against and 30th in high-danger chances allowed.
Jaden Schwartz (SEA vs. ANH): DraftKings – $3,800 | FanDuel – $ 4,700
The Ducks gave up 43 shots to the Canucks last game and were bailed out by John Gibson. Anaheim’s defensive metrics have been bad — 25th in Corsi and 28th in expected goals against. Schwartz has consistently seen over 20 minutes of ice time, and the top line will fully correlate most likely. Depending on Yanni Gourde’s status, Jared McCann should draw back in to pivot the top line with Schwartz and Jordan Eberle. The full line stack is extremely underpriced and makes for a great filler stack tonight.
Defensemen
John Carlson (WSH at DET): DraftKings – $6,700 | DraftKings – $6,700
Carlson started the year very quietly but has since come alive, with points in five straight. He is averaging 24 minutes of ice time, and getting exposure to the top power play with Ovechkin is always a good idea. Carlson is also averaging five shots/blocks per game. Detroit is spending just under seven minutes on the penalty kill per game, which is the second most on the slate. Not to mention they have the 26th-ranked penalty kill, with a 72.2% rate.
Matt Roy (LA at OTT): DraftKings – $4,600 | FanDuel – $3,500
Roy has stepped up when the Kings needed him most. With Drew Doughty and Sean Walker both sidelined, Roy has been logging a ton of minutes. He gets power-play exposure on both units and plays in all situations. Since the opening of the season Roy has averaged 4.5 shots/blocks per game. If he can get involved in the scoring, he should be able to pay that price tag off. Ottawa has been extremely leaky defensively, giving up the third-most fantasy points to opposing defenseman, and their penalty kill has been brutal even though they have been disciplined.

Top NHL DFS Stacks
WSH PP1 – Ovechkin – Kuznetsov – Carlson
Top 2 Stack Percentage: 22.5% | Ownership Share: 10% | Leverage: 12.50%
The Capitals get a good matchup tonight against the Red Wings, even on the road. Ovechkin will likely see the Dylan Larkin line most of the night, which has not been the shutdown line of the past. They have been good at creating offense, but at five-on-five they are also giving up over 37 shots against and over 14 high-danger chances per 60. Detroit also has the league’s 26th-ranked penalty kill, with a 72.3% rate.
SEA1 – Schwartz – McCann – Eberle
Top 2 Stack Percentage: 3.9% | Ownership Share: 7.1% | Leverage: -3.20%
Seattle’s top line is underpriced for their individual metrics, and they make for a solid filler stack with high-priced lineups. McCann will be back from COVID protocol. It is likely that Gourde will miss tonight, leaving the line fully correlated on the top power play. Anaheim has been getting bailed out by great goaltending nightly, and regression or blow-up games are likely to happen when depending on goaltending the way they are. Last game Anaheim gave up 43 shots to Vancouver, and if they plan to do that tonight, Seattle’s top line will make them pay. The Ducks are 25th in Corsi and 28th in expected goals against, while the Kraken are ninth and third, respectively. There should be plenty of chances for the Kraken’s top line to get there tonight.
