Power Plays: 3/11/20 for DraftKings, FanDuel

There are five games tonight, but only four of them are on the NHL DFS slate. The NHL rescheduled the Blues-Ducks game a month ago after Jay Bouwmeester had a scary cardiac health scare on the bench. DraftKings is not putting that game on the slate because they don’t know how it will be scored and how the stats will tally.

NHL DFS Picks: Center

Mika Zibanejad (NYR at COL): DraftKings – $7,900; FanDuel – $8,900

There’s not many options up top that are in play. We need to keep an eye on news, because Connor McDavid missed practice again yesterday and Nathan MacKinnon‘s status is still up in the air. If those two are out, then Zibanejad becomes one of the top centers to pay up for besides Leon Draisaitl. Zibanejad has been ridiculously good this year.  He’s lit the lamp ten times in the past five games, and he’s now reached the 40-goal mark in fewer games than any Ranger in team history. It took him just 56 games to reach 40 goals.

Zibby is averaging over 22 minutes of ice time per night to go along with over four shots per game. The double combo isn’t out of the question either, as he has received the block bonus twice in the past 10 games. Zibanejad is a true goal scorer that can find the back of the net in a hurry. If Colorado is without MacKinnon, they are going to be hard-pressed to keep Zibanejad down.

Dylan Strome (CHI vs. SJ): DraftKings – $4,400; FanDuel – $4,100

The mid-range is pretty shaky on this short slate. Strome has six points over the last 10 games while playing alongside Patrick Kane. He’s a serviceable pivot that can find the passing lanes, and he isn’t afraid to shoot the puck if the shot is there. He won’t play on the top power play unit, but that’s OK because the Sharks are a phenomenal penalty kill team. The even-strength matchup is what you should be looking at. The Blackhawks second line should see plenty of chances against the Joe Thornton line.

NHL DFS Picks: Winger

Patrick Kane (CHI vs. SJ): DraftKings – $7,900; FanDuel – $7,900

Kane does it all. He’s an elite sniper that will double shift and he can create his own shot. Over the last 10 games, Kane has averaged over four shots per game while tallying eight points. With last change, you can almost be certain that Jeremy Colliton will use the Jonathan Toews line as the shutdown line against San Jose’s second line. That will leave Kane the Sharks top line and the depth matchups. The Sharks have been playing great hockey lately, and I wouldn’t mind a fade here if you are only playing a couple lines. But I’ll be staying on brand by getting exposure. The Thornton line is a small sample of the trio, but in that smaller sample, they have given up 32 shots, 16 high-danger chances and 2.91 expected goals per 60

Evander Kane (SJ at CHI): DraftKings – $7,900; FanDuel – $7,200

Evander Kane is a volume shooter, and the Hawks are the team to play against for shot volume. Chicago is giving up the most shots against per 60 in the league, the most scoring chances, the most high-danger chances and they have the highest expected goals against at five-on-five. They have been bailed out all year by their goaltending, and Corey Crawford has played a ton of hockey lately. Both sides of this game should have plenty of chances, and the Sharks second line looks pretty appealing here.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (EDM vs. WPG): DraftKings – $6,900; FanDuel – $7,400

Nugent-Hopkins’ price has been on the rise because of his performance. Over the last 10 games, Nugent-Hopkins has tallied 16 points while averaging three shots per game. There’s nothing more satisfying than attacking the Jets’ new second line. Patrik Laine is allergic to playing defense and their metrics show it. The Jets second line is extremely small, but their numbers are wretched. They are allowing 43 shots, 45 scoring chances, 31 high-danger chances and 5.52 expected goals per 60. Those numbers will positively regress, but in the mean time, you should target their opponents. They have created some offense also, but I’ll attack that poor defense all day with a great line like Nugent-Hopkins-Draisaitl-Yamamoto.

NHL DFS Picks: Defensemen

Brent Burns (SJ at CHI): DraftKings – $7,200; FanDuel – $6,500

Burns is an automatic play when Erik Karlsson is out. San Jose depends on him in every situation. Burns is averaging over 27 minutes of ice time with a ridiculous floor of over six shots/blocks. The Blackhawks are giving away the farm defensively and Burns has a serious chance at a double combo meal tonight.

You can also make a strong case for Oscar Klefbomb tonight. The Oilers’ power play can click and they could light the lamp a couple times against the Jets. Winnipeg has been good about not taking a ton of penalties, but when they do, they struggle mightily to kill them off. Winnipeg is giving up the third-most shot attempts on the penalty kill to go along with the second-worst expected goals against.

Colorado also has a great power play matchup against the Rangers. The Rangers have been short-handed the sixth most in the league, and they are allowing the most shots against on the kill. If there’s no Cale Makar, then guys like Sam Girard and Erik Johnson will start making their way into the conversation.

NHL DFS STACKS

EDM 2: Nugent-Hopkins – Draisaitl – Yamamoto

We have to see what’s going on with the Oilers lines and the morning skate, but it appears that McDavid will come back tonight. If the Oilers keep the second line together, they will see a great matchup all night. The majority of their time will be spent against Winnipeg’s second line of Ehlers-Eakin-Laine. That trio has been an abomination defensively since inception. It’s a very small sample, but we’ve known that Patrik Laine has been a defensive liability for a while. In the 40 minutes that the trio has played together the past couple games, they have created a good amount of offense but they are giving up a ridiculous amount of scoring chances, shown above in the Nugent-Hopkins section. Those numbers are guaranteed to come down, but until then, it looks like a great spot to attack.
