Some general tips on NHL GPP strategy for NBA degens, getting their DFS fix:

  • Correlation is king in the NHL. Unlike the NBA, it’s less about jamming those cheap value plays into your lineups because so and so is injured, and more about putting in players that correlated well together. Popular strategies include:
    • Stacking two full lines (don’t leave off that cheap player just cause he isn’t as good. Zach Kassian is a prime example tonight on EDM1 beside McDavid and Draisaitl). This will be interesting for the large $5 GPP tonight on DK, because we’re going to see a lot of dupilcaiton. There are probably going to be around 200 lineups with BUF1 and MIN2, so get a little creative or leave some cash on the table.
    • Stacking a power-play unit (using four forwards, or adding a defencemen).
    • Stacking a line with one of that team’s defence,
    • Game stacking – taking two lines form opposing teams
    • Full team stacking – taking two full lines from the same team (see. Wild, Minnesota tonight).
    • You can also get creative with three, two-man forward stacks in your lineups, but generally, it’s better to use full line stacks.
    • Don’t play players against your goalie, if you can avoid it. On a very small slate it makes for an interesting contrarian play, but a four game slate is probably too many games. Maaybe you could get away with a shooting, shot blocking D, but more often then not, it’s not advisable.
  • Whenever possible, correlate your goalies. So, if you’re using MIN1, and BUF2 today, in a lineup, you’re probably going to want to have Dubnyk or Ullmark in those lineups. However, we usually don’t have GPPs this large for NHL, so the right move today, if full line stacking, might be to try to create some uniqueness by taking a goalie from another game so your lineups aren’t as likely to duplicate.

And don’t forget to watch Jake Hari and Eric MacPherson at 2:30 PST, 5:30 EST. They’ll be talking macro NHL DFS and tonight’s slate

Power Plays

You’re going to want to stack as much as possible (see above), so if you see a player listed here, consider their linemates orplayers on the power play with them too.

Forward:

Jeff Skinner: Grade: A, Values: B, A

I like all of BUF1 tonight against a Rangers team that has given up the third most scoring chances in the NHL on the road over the past 10 games. Skinner has the scoring upside you want for a GPP, and the shooting floor that you want for cash games. He, along with linemate Jack Eichel are going to get a lot of ice-time tonight, and are due for a little positive regression – finding themselves towards the tail end of a mini-slump after a hot-fire start to the season. Over the past month, Skinner and Eichel converting on just 40% of their high-danger chances, compared to a season average of 65%. Use him as a solo-play in cash, or pair him up with the rest of BUF1 for your GPPs.

Cheap options:

  • Zach Kassian is the bare min on both sites and gets to skate alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. That line generated a whack-tonne of chances against the Penguins last game and got a 32% 5v5 ice-time share (highest on the slate).
  • Adam Henrique and Nick Ritchie haven’t been great together this year, but they do have power play one correlation and they’re both cheap.
  • Pavel Buchnevich has been known to light the lamp on occasion. He’s perhaps out of the doghouse and skating on NYR2 with Jimmy Vesey, who just returned from a stint on the 4th line as well. As such, they’ve been priced down, but should see increased offensive opportunity.

Defence:

Ryan Suter: Grade: A, Values: A, A

There aren’t a lot of pay up options on tonight’s slate for defencemen – which is a nice break, because they’ve been killing us lately. Suter has been getting a load of ice-time lately, in the absence of minute chewer Matthew Dumba. He’s getting about 70% of the power play time for the Wild of late, going up against a Devils squad, who are on back-to-backs, that have conceded the most time short handed in the NHL over their past ten games. If you want to get a little creative, pair him with d-partner Jared Spurgeon, who is another great play tonight.

Cheap Options:

The pickings are slim down low, so try to pay up if at all possible.

  • Michael Del Zotto is on the top Ducks pairing with Cam Fowler. He’s got some offensive upside and is priced near the bare min.
  • Sabres third pairing defencement Lawrence Pilut is an up-and-comer who averaged a point a game in the minors this year. He returns to the power play two and should see 15 minutes tonight. Also near the bare min.
  • Kevin Shattenkirk quarterbacks the Rangers top unit and is just 4K on both sites and will see 20 minutes tonight.
