Following yesterday’s giant 10-game slate, Friday brings a much more manageable four-game slate with a few of the league’s best teams and a few of its very worst. With situations such as these, it makes for very clear-cut leverage spots along with obvious popular spots. Getting the right mix of both is crucial smaller slates in NHL DFS. To help us juggle all of these factors, I’ll be using Awesemo’s industry-leading NHL DFS projections, along with ownership projections, and Top Stacks Tool. Let’s find some of Awesemo’s optimal NHL DFS picks for our DraftKings and FanDuel fantasy hockey lineups for Friday’s Slate.

NHL Power Plays: DraftKings + FanDuel DFS Picks | April 30
NHL DFS Picks: Center
Anze Kopitar (LA vs. ANA)
DraftKings – $6,300
FanDuel – $6,900
This game as a whole may be the least appealing on the slate for NHL DFS, but Kopitar is always relevant. As a top-three center in the Awesemo NHL DFS projections on DraftKings and FanDuel, and at a slightly reduced price, he makes for a great value in all formats. Even though the Kings have struggled to score all year — coming in 26th in total goals — Kopitar has still found ways to get his. With 46 points in 47 games, he’s still top 25 in the league in scoring and averaging over 21 minutes played per game. Along with all of the consistent production he is also getting arguably the easiest defensive matchup on the slate depending on how one views the Jets.
With Colorado and Vegas sucking up much of the ownership according to the Awesemo daily fantasy hockey ownership projections, pivoting to any other spots will immediately help in terms of theory. With a plus matchup against a team whose season is way over, Kopitar is the preferred option as a leverage play.
Others: Any Avs Center, Jesperi Kotkaniemi
NHL DFS Picks: Winger
Tyler Toffoli (MTL vs. WPG)
DraftKings – $6,400
FanDuel – $6,900
There are few better per-minute producers in the NHL than Toffoli, with over four shot attempts per game in just 17:27 of ice time. Now, factor in that he’s playing the league’s worst defensive team at five-on-five and the worst penalty kill over the last 10, that creates a high ceiling with a great floor. All things considered, the pricing is adequate on both sites and should keep his overall ownership in check, which is crucial to any play on this slate.
There is not much else to say here besides that as long as ownership doesn’t get out of control in a fantastic spot, he’s a phenomenal pay-up-to-be-different option.
Mattias Janmark (VGK vs. ARI)
DraftKings – $3,500
FanDuel – $3,500
This is the lovely intersection of opportunity, price, ownership and matchup for Janmark. Getting a spot on the top power-play unit since being traded over from Chicago, Janmark is too affordable at $3,500 industrywide going up against the Coyotes’ bottom-third penalty kill (metrically speaking). For the year, the Arizona penalty kill is 27th in expected goals against per 60 but has managed to kill off 80% of penalties with great goaltending and some puck luck. As for Janmark, in his time in Vegas he’s averaged nearly 17 minutes per game thanks to his role, even though he’s on the third line. The Coyotes are taking well over the three penalties per game, so chances should once again be there for Janmark.

NHL DFS Picks: Defense
Cale Makar (COL vs. SJ)
DraftKings – $5,900
FanDuel – $5,700
Until Makar is over $6,000 again, the best play is to keep running him out there. Every piece of Colorado is going to be quite popular, according to the Awesemo NHL DFS ownership projections, so if gamers can find any player on their team going under-owned, they need to take advantage. With under 20% projected ownership per Awesemo, we can find some relief here. The Sharks have struggled all year stopping teams from scoring, with the 29th-ranked goals against per 60 and 26th high-danger chances against.
It is just an oversight by both sites at this point, and at no cost to the ceiling. In GPPs, completing the full stack with Makar is going to be an easy avenue to differentiating.
Others: Drew Doughty, Kevin Shattenkirk, Shea Weber
Top Stack
MTL1: Toffoli – Suzuki – Caufield
As a fully correlated line on the top power play as well, there is almost zero to dislike here for the Canadiens’ top line. Keep an eye on their overall ownership, as they are a possible filler with COL1 if Mikko Rantanen is not in for their game. As mentioned above, the Jets have been awful defensively in all facets of the game and need to be exploited.
