Skaters And Goalies — NHL DFS (10/15) MAIN

This “Ides Of October” slate features plays, traps, and more. First off, let’s remind everyone of the Votts media list and a few links to follow one more time.

When you are making your teams, one needs to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.comLeftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great source exists in team the form of team beat writers.  Jeff has created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and naturalstattrick.com.

Skater Plays For Monday

High Priced Shots

John Tavares ($7,500) — The recommended play here is reasonable given his price has backed off a little. Tavares fired just two shots on net in the game against Washington on Saturday. Honestly. Toronto is kind of a coin flip as to which high-priced center to play. Whomever avoids the Anze Kopitar line the most likely has the most points. However, the penalty kill of Los Angeles is vulnerable to tons of scoring chances per 60. This is far from the only fun matchup.

Tyler Seguin ($8,200) — Seguin has had multiple points in three straight contests. One of the more obvious stack plays is the most expensive, however. It will be how one pieces together the players. The production from that Seguin line is undeniable. Their projections rate very highly tonight (top of the slate). However, can you sneak an Alexander Radulov, Jamie Benn, or John Klingberg in? It may be a sign to dig deeper. The over/under in the Dallas-Ottawa game is 6.5. That may drive even more play there.

Filip Forsberg ($6,900) — Forsberg’s ceiling helps and his price is not all that bad. Going up against a Minnesota team that can easily allow 35+ shots along with generating 30+ shots does help. An elevated ceiling is expected as far as blocked shots and shots. Forsberg had three points in two games against the New York Islanders. The top Nashville line matches up well like how Carolina did against the Wild. It may not be to the same extreme but this does make the Predators’ wingers a more palatable option.

Into The Middle

Kasperi Kapanen ($5,400) — Kapanen presents a solid choice here even at his DraftKings price. On other sites like FanDuel, he becomes a ridiculously good value pivot. His speed kills along with his hands. Teams just have a hard time matching up with the space he creates. Los Angeles has 15 players over 200 pounds and will try to out-muscle the speed Toronto top six. That may be easier said than done.

Thomas Chabot ($5,800) — It is acceptable to take some risks in this price range. Chabot is definitely a hot hand and there are more tried and true choices out there in this bracket. However, his value has skyrocketed into the upper tier for defensemen. Chabot has high ceiling possibilities because of the tough matchup potential (again Dallas). On the other hand, the defenseman has a decent chance of generating a point via goal or assist. Maxime Lajoie and his hot start have to be considered. Even Nashville’s defensive core players have some possibilities because of how Minnesota can get cratered by teams (see Carolina performance against them). Chris Tierney is another option from Ottatwa and he almost falls into the value err dart category.

Kyle Turris ($4,500) — Turris offers a high-risk GPP choice here unlike some of the safer cash choices around his price range. It could be all or nothing, similar to a Mitch Marner. The Nashville forward was a goal scoring fiend at home during the later portion of last season. He scored over the weekend and showed some signs of heating up with a few High-Danger chances created.

Throwing Some Darts

Nick Jensen ($3,000) — Jensen heads a bit of the surprise group of players that Detroit possesses. Yes, they may be bad defensively but Jensen has a pretty good ceiling. When one considers that price point on DraftKings, he will be plugged into a lot of lineups. When those are desperate for value, they will look anywhere. He does have three points in four games on the young season. Jensen plays around 21 minutes a night as well.

Detroit goaltending ($7,100) — Detroit’s goaltending creates extreme risk for a GPP. The idea in this rationale is looking for a team that could allow a good deal of shots and may not get dinged for two or less goals. This is a slight possibility given how Montreal can go ice cold from the goal standpoint. See who starts and if that fails, there is always Ryan Hartman or Connor Carrick as viable value choices on Monday night.

Goading The Goalies

Again, our best bet with this slate is to simply wait for confirmations to come in. Detroit goaltending is just $7,100 on DraftKings which is basically the price of a value goalie. They could face 30+ shots from Montreal as their top two lines still generate a high expected shots for per 60. Wait to see who starts will be a theme sadly on this four game slate. Some will take risks on the goaltending of Los Angles even with their below $7,000 price tag.

Unfortunately, only one goalie was confirmed at press time, so current projected rankings are as follows (based on projected starters).

  1. Pekka Rinne (Nashville — moderate risk)
  2. Frederik Andersen (Toronto)
  3. Insert Detroit goaltender here.

Best of luck on Monday! This will be a fun ride.
