PGA Odds & Expert Picks: The 3M Open

In this new weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the 3M Open.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Sergio Garcia

Outright 33-1 (William Hill)

It is always scary backing a guy in the outright market who struggles with the putter, but I am doing exactly that with Sergio Garcia here. Seeing 33-1 in this weak field was a surprise, and coming off a top-20 showing at the British Open and four straight made cuts, his game is in decent shape. Garcia is among the best in the field tee to green, and he should be able to lean on that to avoid most of the water hazards on this course.

Before his win at Sanderson Farms in late 2020, Garcia had lost strokes putting in nine straight events, which proves it can turn at any time. His putting has not been nearly as bad as that stretch, and with the way he is striking it, I am comfortable taking an outright shot here. If you want a more conservative approach +300 for a top-10 finish is more than reasonable and provides a lot more wiggle room to cash a ticket.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Emiliano Grillo

Outright 33-1 (PointsBet)

No, this is not Ben Rasa’s burner account. I too am an Emiliano Grillo truther and feel like this could be a great spot for him to break through for his second PGA Tour win. The 12th place Grillo put up at the British Open last week tied for his best finish ever in a major. Some players have gained confidence from a big week at a major championship this year (Stewart Cink at the RBC and Harris English at the Travelers both come to mind), and it feels like Grillo could be next in line for that breakthrough win after his strong British Open.

Grillo ranks second in this field in strokes gained on approach over the last 50 rounds, and while he ranks near the bottom in around-the-green play, TPC Twin Cities has some easy green complexes that also allowed another subpar around-the-green player in Matthew Wolff to take the title in 2019. After finishing third here in 2020, Grillo can go hunting for a big week at a venue that clearly caters well to his all-or-nothing approach game.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Robert Macintyre

Outright 40-1 (BetMGM)

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, well, that will not happen. Garrick Higgo burst onto the PGA scene by winning the Palmetto Championship after a great run on the European Tour, and Robert MacIntyre is poised to do the same. He has been around a few years longer than Higgo and has endured a lot of success as well. While some of these European Tour players do not manifest in the states, the ones with the most talent typically do, and MacIntyre is at the head of that list this week. The course should fit fine for him with plenty of birdie opportunities.

Max Smotritskiy’s Pick: Maverick McNealy

Outright 50-1 (PointsBet)

Maverick McNealy is playing his best golf and is finally poised to break through for his first win on the PGA Tour. He has already come incredibly close to winning this year, with two top-five finishes in the last six months in better fields than is currently teeing it up at the 3M Open. While he has gained strokes tee to green in his last four starts, he has also shown up with the putter as well. It should take quite a low score to get the win this week, and that is almost impossible to do for a golfer that does not get hot with the flat stick. McNealy checks all the boxes, as he is also long and straight off the tee and has done a great job of hitting greens in regulation. In general he has great form and a great course fit. There is a lot to like about McNealy this week, and he should be in the hunt come Sunday.
