PGA Betting Picks: Outrights & Each-Way Bets for the American Express

Whether you are a pro making your own PGA betting picks or just getting into the game, betting on golf provides a great way to sweat the action. Like most other professional sports, there are plenty of ways you can bet on golf; with outright winners, head-to-head matchups and plenty more, golf betting offers a wide array of PGA odds and wagers. There will certainly be an edge to be found each and every week, starting with the American Express.

That’s why we are debuting our PGA betting series. It consists of three articles:

  • Outrights & Each Way (this one)
  • Head-to-Head Matchups
  • Jason’s Bet of the day (stole this idea from Awesemo’s own Ben Rasa).

Before we dive headfirst into my foursome of picks for this week, I want to make sure that we define terms for those of you who are brand new.

Outright: A bet that is placed on a golfer to win the tournament.

Each Way: A bet that covers a golfer for the top-five, top-10 and top-20 bets offered.

Article Results (Four Picks Per Week)

Eight Total Picks:

  • Wins: 0
  • Top-5’s: 1
  • Top-10s: 3
  • Top-20s: 4

We had a chance on Sunday for the second straight week only to fall a bit short. In all, a Joaquin Niemann each-way paid out 11-2 for the top-five at the highest, and the Daniel Berger top-10 added to the payout at +175. Brendon Todd and Will Gordon were misses.

PGA Betting Odds & Picks: American Express Outright Bets

Matthew Wolff

Outright: 22-1 | Top 5: 11-2 |  Top 10: 3-1 | Top 20: +150

While the young phenom may have missed out on a trip to Hawaii this year, I think he’s in good shape to earn an invitation back there this week. With Jon Rahm dropping out this week, he arguably is the best player in the field, or at least that’s a great possibility in due time. I don’t think he’s less likely to win this tournament than Scottie Scheffler, whose odds are at 17-1 to win.

This is a great time to mention the new-and-improved Awesemo Odds Shopper tool. Beyond its many capabilities, it provides us with an easy way to make sure we are getting the best bet available. Here’s a preview:

Abraham Ancer

Outright: 30-1 |  Top 5: 11-2 | Top 10: 7-2 | Top 20: +150

Ending last year on a high note only to start this one off on a low one, Ancer’s missed fortune around the greens cost him a paycheck. But his ball striking looked great, and the newer, faster greens may help mitigate some of the downfalls. At 30-1, we are getting a much better price than if he had a good weekend last week.

Joel Dahmen

Outright: 90-1 | Top 5: 16-1 | Top 10: 8-1 | Top 20: 4-1

One of the best personalities on the PGA Tour, Dahmen has found a grove since joining the tour a few years ago. He has been close to a win a few times, and when he gets the putter rolling, he can light it up in a hurry. He will need to do all of that this week with low scores expected. I like his value across the board, though maybe not necessarily to win. Even the 4-1 for the top-20 has value.

Bombs of the Week: Akshay Bhatia and Ryan Armour

Outright: 400-1 | Top 5: 80-1 | Top 10: 33-1 | Top 20: 15-1

The teenager turned pro golfer, Bhatia has enjoyed mild success in his limited starts on tour, with one of them being a top-10 in California. Armour, on the other hand, popped up last week with a bit of form and tends to excel in the fall and early-season events. With his putter working last week, hopefully that will bleed confidence to the rest of his bag and get him a chance at a top-20 here.
