College Basketball Betting Picks: Utah State vs VCU

Utah State -4 (William Hill)

We may be focused on Thanksgiving Football, but don’t forget about the college basketball season tipping off today. We have hundreds of teams getting started, and although COVID is already an issue, there still are plenty of games to break down. With over 300 teams in Division I, this is a huge undertaking early in the season, but we can still try and locate some teams to buy into before the lines have a chance to adjust.

My favorite game out of the marquee matchups tonight takes us to Sioux Falls, S.D. for the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic. This week is littered with neutral-site tournaments, and tonight Utah State takes on Virginia Commonwealth in what should be a good test for both teams. Utah State is -4, and they have a much more experienced team coming into this opening game.

Let’s start with Utah State, which lost its leader in Sam Merrill but returns three starters. In addition, they add in a transfer from Virginia in the backcourt, which could help to lessen the blow of losing Merrill, and I don’t think the drop-off will be much. This frontcourt has two players who averaged north of 10 points per game last year, and they should be the focal point of this Aggies’ attack. Utah State was 26-8 last season, and although it may suffer a few more losses in this campaign, I expect a big showing right out of the gate.

On the other side, Virginia Commonwealth is coming off an 18-13 campaign but suffered a complete overhaul of the roster. They lost all five starters from last season, so it’s going to be a lot of new faces trying to keep VCU relevant this season. It’s not all doom and gloom, though, as VCU has a bunch of rotational players back, including guard Nah’Shon Hyland, who should be the leader of this new Rams bunch.

Given the extreme drop-off from VCU’s roster and the frontcourt that Utah State has, I am comfortable laying the 4 points in this opening game. The neutral floor is a wash, and coming into a game off of what was surely a brutal offseason, I believe chemistry and experience will matter even more. There is no question Utah State has the massive advantage in that department, and I will back the Aggies to win this one going away.

Austin Peay -6.5 (DraftKings)

There are some matchups like the one above against teams that are somewhat mainstream, but outside of that there are dozens of matchups between smaller schools. While those teams don’t move the needle for the masses, they still can be profitable if you do the research and find some value. A team to keep an eye on this season is Austin Peay, which is a 6.5-point favorite today against Nebraska Omaha. Austin Peay has a potential pro in Terry Taylor, who will be the best player on the court almost every time they take the floor. In 2019 Austin Peay finished 21-12, and with the core of that team back, I expect big things for the Governors, including in this game tonight where I will be laying the 6.5 points.
