PGA Odds & Expert Picks: The British Open
In this weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds and predictions for The British Open.
Ben Rasa’s Pick: Patrick Cantlay
Outright 33-1 (William Hill)
With it being a major field, there are some very appealing prices in the outright market. Naturally, the competition is much tougher up top, but Patrick Cantlay at 33-1 is good enough to jump on. He is a well-rounded player who checks most of the boxes for a difficult test like Royal St George’s. Hopefully the weather and tee time draw will break in his favor, but that is out of his control.
Cantlay took advantage of Rahm’s withdrawal a few weeks ago grabbed a win at the Memorial. He has played in two British Opens in recent years, so he has some experience dealing with links venues. He is virtually automatic at gaining strokes tee to green and comes in having gained strokes putting in three straight events. With the reasonable outright number and the game in form, there is no reason Cantlay cannot break through here.
Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Marc Leishman
Outright +6600 | Top 20 +300 (BetMGM)
Leishman looks like he could be peaking at just the right moment. A slow summer was halted by his performance at the Travelers where he finished third and shot a final-round 64. He gained 4.5 strokes off the tee alone at the Travelers — the first time he has gained over a stroke off the tee since 2020 — and that is a great sign that his confidence could be blooming. An elite iron player and putter, Leishman’s game is well suited for the tortures of British Open golf, an event he has finished sixth or better in three out of his eight career appearances.
He also fits all of the trends for this event as well. He is over 32 years old (seven of the last nine winners have been 32-plus), he has recorded a top-10 or better at this event before (14 of the 15 winners had achieved this before winning), and he is landed a top-20 finish in a previous major on the season (fifth at the Masters; seven of the last eight winners had achieved this). Leishman’s outright odds look incredibly juicy here, and he sets up great for what should be a wide-open test this week.
Max Smotritskiy’s Pick: Patrick Reed
Outright +3300 | Top 10 +300 (BetMGM)
Reed hoisting the Claret Jug while the English boo him would be a fun ending to the British Open this week. Reed is certainly able to perform on big stages, as he has evidenced in every Ryder Cup he has participated in, and he also checks the statistical boxes this week. Reed has performed well in the last five tries at this championship, with two top-20s and only one missed cut. His form is excellent as well, gaining strokes in every facet except at the Travelers where the putter did not show up for him. He is also excellent at hard courses, on slow greens and in stronger fields. Reed checks all the boxes this week, and rooting for the villain is always fun.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Justin Thomas
Outright +2000 | Top 10 +175 (BetMGM)
When all the big names are here to play, and one of them is an overwhelming favorite like Jon Rahm is this week, it is bound to make odds longer for some golfers we are not using to seeing at these prices. Thomas is one of them this week, creeping back into the 20-1 range. He has been able to win from this number a couple of times. In fact, his last couple of wins came on or above that number. He seems to have fixed some putting issues by getting a new shaft put in. Sometimes with a player of his caliber that is all he needs to catch the spark.
Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Rickie Fowler
Outright +8000 | Top 5 +1300 (PointsBet)
While it’s easy to drop down in DFS and fire up sub-$8,000 plays due to the talent in the range, it’s exponentially harder to stomach making outright bets on the same names. However, some of the turns in Rickie Fowler’s game have proved undeniable, as he’s now been gained at least three strokes tee-to-green in three of his past four events. More importantly, Fowler has gained with the flat stick in three of his past four events as well, a welcome sign from a player who has been in the middle of a putting drought for the better part of two years. With a T8 at the PGA Championship on the books less than two months ago, signs are surprisingly pointing in Rickie Fowler’s directions this week. 80-to-1 makes him the longest shot play on the card this week, and could make a nice addition to yours, too.
