PGA Best Bets, Picks & Odds: Charles Schwab Challenge

Emiliano Grillo: Outright 50-1 (PointsBet) | Top 10 +400 (PointsBet)

Sometimes in golf there are guys who seem like good DFS plays but not the greatest bets, while others are interesting wagers but don’t fit lineups. Grillo this week fits both betting and DFS, which is why I want to have exposure in both markets. He comes into Charles Schwab having made four of five cuts, including a second-place finish at RBC Heritage. Finishing runner-up anywhere is a good sign, but Harbour Town is a comp course to what he will face here, so it’s a huge benefit to see that result.

Grillo is an incredible ball striker, but more importantly, his putter has seen an uptick. It is normally the weak link in the game, and at one point in 2020 he had lost strokes putting in 13 of 14 events. He seems to have found something of late, as he has been positive on the greens in three of his last four weeks. This is a perfect venue for him to contend, and despite the solid form, 50-1 in the outright market is available. If you want a more conservative approach +400 for a top-10 finish is another way to get exposure to Grillo this week.

Harold Varner III: Outright +9000 (BetMGM) | Top 10 +750 (BetMGM)

Varner comes into this event off a 49th at the PGA Championship where he gained 6.8 strokes tee to green but lost 3.8 strokes putting. The tricky paspalum greens at Kiawah were no friend to Varner, but he showed good sharpness again in the other aspects of his game. He has gained 6.5 strokes or more tee to green in three of his last five starts, and it was just a few events ago that he landed a solo second place at another classic/tree-lined course at Harbour Town. Varner has often produced his best results at these shorter venues (second at Harbour Town, fifth at Mayakoba, sixth at John Deere), which tend to place more emphasis on consistent iron play, and he has also gained strokes around the green in four of his last five start. He opened with a 63 here last season on his way to a 19th-place finish and has pretty appealing odds this week. His outright number is big enough to sprinkle in, but his top-10 odds also look very appealing as well given his propensity for spike weeks.

Joel Dahmen: Outright +10000 (BetMGM) | Top 10 +750 (BetMGM)

Dahmen was my pick for an easy top-20 last week, and he was right there until losing five strokes putting in the last round. However, the weird, slow greens last week confused most golfers. He shined tee to green on a very difficult course. Dahmen gained 7.3 strokes ball striking, 5.5 of those coming on approach. Irons are the most important clubs every week but more so here at Colonial where it is the main driver to scoring by quite a bit. Par-4 scoring is a stat worth zeroing in on this week, and Dahmen smashes in this aspect as well. His course history doesn’t leap off the page, but two top-20s mixed in around a missed cut is nothing to shy away from. As long as the putting is decent this week, Dahmen should be there on Sunday.

Collin Morikawa: Outright +1400 (BetMGM) | Top 10 +140 (BetMGM)

Looking ahead just a few weeks to the U.S. Open against one of the toughest fields in golf, Morikawa is 22-1 to win, only 8 points higher than he is this week. That seems like a pretty good value given that he lost in a playoff here less than a year ago, and only a few the world’s top 10 are here this week. His superb iron play is rewarded on a track that is hard to overpower, making this a great fit. Plus, he has been in solid form now for quite some time, so I would like to use the plus money on the top-10 to ensure a profitable week in case his putter goes ice cold.
