After closing out their series win over the Utah Jazz less than 48 hours prior to Sunday’s Game 1, it was impressive how the Clippers hung right with the Suns. Unfortunately, the lack of scoring balance that plagued L.A. early on in the playoffs reared its ugly head again. Only three Clippers scored in double figures, with the most substantial contributions coming from Paul George (34 points) and Reggie Jackson (24). DeMarcus Cousins rounded out the trio with 11 points in his 13 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Marcus Morris, Nicolas Batum and Terance Mann were all quiet after stepping up in the Western Conference Semifinals. Given that the Clippers will once again be without Kawhi Leonard, more players will need to contribute offensively if they are to pull an upset tonight as NBA betting underdogs.

While the Clippers had proven that they could win without Leonard prior to Game 1, such was not the case for the Suns minus Chris Paul. Phoenix adequately checked that box on Sunday. Devin Booker went bananas, scoring 40 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing 11 assists for his first career postseason triple-double. Center Deandre Ayton did an excellent job of controlling the interior. He finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Four other Suns scored in double figures as well, including Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder, Cameron Johnson and Cameron Payne. With Paul sidelined, Payne stepped up to distribute nine assists in 29 minutes of action. The Suns proved that they are far more than a one-trick pony in Game 1.

Clippers vs. Suns Prediction

The Suns exceeded expectations when it came to adjusting for the absence of Chris Paul in Game 1. Meanwhile, the Clippers supporting cast failed to replicate its clutch performances in the final two games of their Western Conference Semifinals series. The injury situation remains the same for tonight’s contest with both Paul and Kawhi Leonard once again sidelined. Although they suffered defeat in Game 1, the Clippers have to be encouraged by the fact that they kept things as close as they did in what turned out to be a career game for Devin Booker. Assuming at least one other player steps up for L.A. offensively tonight, it should be another tight affair. They may not win, but the Clippers are the preferred side catching points.

Prediction: Clippers +5 (PointsBet)
