Clippers vs. Suns NBA Playoffs Preview

Rare is the occasion that a team loses its best player to injury and arguably plays better without him. The Clippers basically have done just that on their way to reaching the Western Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history. Los Angeles has now overcome 2-0 series deficits in each of the first two rounds. After leveling up their conference semifinals series against the Jazz at two games apiece, the Clippers were informed that they would be without Kawhi Leonard until further notice. Then Paul George silenced his critics in Games 5 and 6. He followed up his 37-point effort in a crucial road win with 28 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the Game 6 clincher.

For as great as he was on Friday, George wasn’t the Game 6 hero; that honor belonged to Terance Mann, who dropped 39 points to power the Clippers to the series win. Los Angeles also got ample scoring production from Reggie Jackson in both games without Leonard. Nicolas Batum, Marcus Morris and Patrick Beverley all stepped up as well. The team already announced Leonard will not be available for the first two games in the Western Conference Finals. Can the Clippers steal a road win without him?

The Latest Sports Betting Content from Stokastic Odds

After dethroning the reigning NBA champion Lakers in Round 1, the Suns breezed through the semifinals. The depth of Phoenix’s roster proved to be no match for the injury-depleted Nuggets. The Suns also put their top-notch defense on display throughout the four-game sweep. They frustrated NBA MVP Nikola Jokic mightily and kept the rest of the Nuggets supporting cast in check. Meanwhile, Chris Paul and Devin Booker led a balanced offensive attack throughout the series. The two combined for 71 points in the Game 4 closeout win.

Just as the Clippers find themselves facing adversity without Leonard, the Suns are facing a new wrinkle coming into this matchup. Paul will not be available for Game 1 and possibly beyond after being placed on the virus list. How Phoenix adjusts without him will be fascinating to watch. On the bright side, the Suns have plenty of players capable of stepping up. Center Deandre Ayton has been steady throughout the postseason. Along with Mikal Bridges and Jae Crowder, the Suns can lessen the blow of losing Paul. Backup point guard Cameron Payne has also put together some impressive outings this postseason. He could be a difference maker for as long as Paul is forced to be sidelined.

Clippers vs. Suns NBA Betting Trends

  • Clippers are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games.
  • Suns are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games.
  • Suns are 5-0 ATS in their last five playoff games as a favorite.
  • Over is 5-1 in the Clippers’ last six playoff games as an underdog.
  • Under is 8-2 in the Suns’ last 10 games when playing on three or more days rest.
  • Clippers are 14-5 in their last 19 head-to-head matchups against the Suns.

Clippers vs. Suns Prediction

The absences of Leonard and Paul certainly cast a shadow over the start of this matchup. Both teams are in uncharted territory as far as being on the doorstep of the NBA Finals. Whichever side can better overcome the absence of their respective leader will gain the upper hand early in this series. While the Clippers have already shown their resolve throughout these playoffs, the Suns are yet to face this kind of adversity. Both teams ranked in the top five for scoring defense on the season. This series could very well turn into a physical battle.

Ultimately, Phoenix’s Round 2 series sweep isn’t doing their series price any favors. While it’s fair to dub the Suns as NBA betting favorites, this matchup projects to be a whole lot tighter than the current odds would suggest. A lot depends on the length of Paul’s absence. It is difficult to imagine the Suns winning this series without him, so the underdog Clippers have all of the betting value coming into the Western Conference Finals.

Series Prediction: Clippers 4, Suns 2

Clippers vs. Suns Best Bet

Series Handicap: Clippers +1.5 (-130)

Whether the Clippers prevail or not, this is going to be a long series. While the Suns will have to adjust to being without Paul, Los Angeles has already played and won two games without the services of Leonard. The Clippers have a great shot to steal a game on the road out of the gates. Provided that they hold serve in at least two home games after that, these Western Conference Finals will go the distance.
