Edlow’s Edge: OddsShopper MLB + NFL | Monday, 10/12

Even with the conclusion of the NBA season, we still have plenty on the sports calendar. The NLCS between the Braves and the Dodgers gets underway, and we have a Monday Night Football game with the Chargers facing the Saints. Let’s break down these MLB picks and NFL picks that jump out to me, using the Awesemo OddsShopper tool to help us find the best current odds.

Atlanta Braves vs. Los Angeles Dodgers: Los Angeles First Five -0.5 (+105)

Money is coming in on the Braves in this one, and as hot as they may be, they’re still up against the Dodgers here. It’s rare that the Dodgers don’t own an advantage in the bullpen, but with both teams fresh, Atlanta is a team that can make that claim.

Max Fried had a tremendous season but limped into the playoffs with a 4.91 ERA in September. He also got banged up in his last playoff start against the Marlins, allowing four runs in four innings. Now he faces a Dodgers lineup that absolutely smashes left-handed pitching, going 15-5 against them this season. The Dodgers are also 15-5 against the first-five run line over their last 20 overall.

Walker Buehler has allowed three runs in 12 innings since coming off the IR, striking out 16 in just eight innings of work this postseason. These Atlanta bats are a combined 6-for-37 against Buehler in their careers. Personally, I am going to split this bet with half on the run line at +105 and half on the moneyline at -140.

Los Angeles Chargers at New Orleans Saints: Los Angeles +7 (-108)

I haven’t bet this one personally yet, but it’s Chargers or pass for me. I’m also considering teasing them up to +13 and piecing it with something from Week 6 or just leaving the second leg open. The Chargers have competed well with Justin Herbert at quarterback and are 3-1 against the spread this season, covering both road games. They were in great position to upset the Buccaneers outright on the road last week, but some key turnovers swung the game. The Saints have been a different offense without Michael Thomas on the field, losing twice outright as the favorite. Just because they beat the Lions by 6  on the road last week doesn’t mean we can forget the duds this team has laid this season. Thomas is worth more to the spread to the point where we’ve seen it move since he was ruled out.

If you do like the +7, you’ll want to jump on it, with some books already showing 6.5. But the majority of the books still show 7, all in the range of -108 to -115 . Sugar House saves you the most juice at -108, but if any book winds up with a spot to buy the hook for cheap, +7.5 would really interest me.
