Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Giants: Pittsburgh -6 (-110)

I got a little cute trying to fade the Saints early season struggles by going with an unproven team in the Buccaneers on Sunday. This time we don’t have to worry about that, both teams have been awful in the past in Week 1. But from a coaching standpoint, you have to give a huge edge to Mike Tomlin, facing Joe Judge in his first game as an NFL head coach. The Giants were just 2-6 against the spread at home last season, and 0-5 against the spread as a home underdog. In those five games, the Giants lost by an average of 17.2 points, and failed to cover by 12.5 points per game.

Pittsburgh’s defense was tremendous in 2019, and part of the reason they almost made it to the postseason, despite all the injuries on offense. The Steelers should have massive edges with both their defensive and offensive lines in this matchup, which I expect to dictate the majority of this game. You can throw the 2019 offensive numbers out the window with the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger got injured almost immediately, and JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Conner also missed a good amount of time.

OddsShopper shows us this one is the same across the board at every single book. Keep an eye if there’s a better price as kickoff approaches, but if anything, I expect some books to start offering a worse price on Pittsburgh as money flows in.

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox: First Five Over 5 (-115)

These are a couple of the best first-five offenses in baseball, with the White Sox ranking fifth overall and the Twins sixth. This total sets up perfectly for an over, specifically with the game in Chicago, as the White Sox average 3.52 first-five runs per game at home, and the Twins average 3.5 first-five runs per game on the road.

At first glance, this may look like a decent pitching matchup, but digging into the numbers, I expect some early runs. Jose Berrios has been a different pitcher on the road this season, posting a 6.75 ERA through four starts. In his last road start against the White Sox, Berrios couldn’t last longer than four innings, allowing five earned runs himself. Dylan Cease is off to an improved start in 2020, but this will be his first time facing Minnesota’s daunting lineup. The Twins teed off on Cease last season, scoring 13 runs in just seven innings combined over two starts.

OddsShopper is a bit more scattered for this bet when looking at the full game total. There’s some 9’s and 9.5s on the board. BetMGM still shows the 9 with -110 on the over, so start your search there for a first-five over play.
