Unlike last week in Canada, we’ve seen a mixed bag of results in Cincinnati with an eclectic mix of players here in the quarters — even Benoit Paire. Weather has been weather with some delays early in the week and now the heat and humidity has reared its head, which may explain no repeats from last week. That said, this group in the Western Open Quarterfinals is about as strong as you’ll see without including the world’s top two players. This will make for some tough tennis betting odds and picks, but here we are, so let’s get into it.
Tennis Odds & Betting Picks: 2021 Western Open Quarterfinals
Alexander Zverev (-385, SugarHouse)
Opponent: Casper Ruud
Venue: ATP Tour, Cincinnati (Hardcourt) 8:30 pm EST
With four of the top 10 hard-court players (per ELO) on tour still remaining here, our choices are not limited. After winning the gold medal in Tokyo and coming back to the tour in dominant fashion, Alexander Zverev is the preferred option. The No. 3-seeded Zverev has shown all year that he may carries one of the strongest overall games on any surface with 35 wins in 46 matches (18-4 on hard court). The German also gets the luxury of drawing the best stylistic matchup of anyone left in clay-courter Casper Ruud. Ruud is still working on developing his overall game outside of clay and has done so nicely. But as it stands now, this would be his first winning year on hard courts on the ATP, but with no wins against top-tier hard-court players.
Zverev is the biggest favorite on this late schedule of matches, with good reason considering his current run. Often known for starting his matches unfocused, he’s overcome that in his last eight, losing just one set. At this number, he’s still drawing value against his typical odds and ELO probability of 75.6%. The tennis betting market may like Ruud’s recent win against Reilly Opelka but after a deep run in Canada, a letdown was expected. As a last tidbit, Zverev is the only finalist not named Andrey Rublev who hasn’t lost at least twice to his opponent.
Jil Teichmann (+3.5 Games +104, SugarHouse)
Opponent: Belinda Bencic
Venue: WTA Tour, Cincinnati (Hardcourt) 7:00 pm EST
Jil Teichmann is putting together the best year of her career with a 15-11 W-L record on tour coming off a huge win against Naomi Osaka. Teichmann is still a bit of a work in progress, but has shown spikes in her performance with two singles titles to her name (2019). She plays a much different game than her opponent Belinda Bencic, who relies much on power. Teichmann will look to frustrate her fellow Swiss countrymate with her mobility and defense, which should work to her benefit. Bencic is playing very well, winning gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but struggles with a consistent serve and stroke. For her career, her double-fault percentage is just under 7%, but she’s kept it under 3% in her most recorded matches.
All WTA matches are a rollercoaster ride regardless of who is involved. Regression on Bencic’s serve is, undoubtedly, coming with her career rate triple of what it has been the last few weeks. Teichmann should be confident coming off her big win, so if we want to double down, I’d also like the first-set win bet for her at +163.
