Matt Olson Over 1.5 Total Bases

The ROI for total bases will almost always be plus money, and Matt Olson is no exception at +115 today. The Atlanta Braves face the Washington Nationals, and the Nationals are sending Josiah Gray to the mound. While he can strike out some hitters with a career 9.76 K/9, he also has a career 4.95 xFIP and has not quite figured out how to get outs at the major league level consistently. Lefty hitters especially have been an issue with a .322 ISO and .375 wOBA given up through 139 plate appearances, and Olson does not strike out a ton against righty pitching; since the start of last year he has a strikeout rate of just 16%. Gray uses his fastball over 58% to the left side of the plate, and that’s something Olson can exploit with a .393 wOBA, .282 ISO and an average distance of 310 feet in 131 batted ball events.

Jose Ramirez Over 1.5 Total Bases

Jose Ramirez has come flying out of the gates so far, hitting .429 throughout his first five games for a 1.383 OPS, and he is still +100 for this wager. The Guardians will face off against lefty pitcher Nick Lodolo for the Cincinnati Reds, who is making his major league debut today, and that’s always a bit of a mystery bag. Some pitchers walk in and roll through the opposing lineups, some fall prey to nerves and struggle to show why they are considered a big-time prospect like Lodolo is. Last year Ramirez had a .368 wOBA, 134 wRC+, and a .237 ISO against lefty pitching in 211 plate appearances. He also has the advantage of being in Cincinnati, which guarantees him nine innings of at-bats and Cincinnati is one of the friendliest hitter’s ballparks in the majors. According to Baseball Savant, only Colorado and Boston had a better park factor in favor of hitters in 2021, so Ramirez should not be at +100.

Bobby Dalbec Over 1.5 Total Bases

This wager can pay off at +130 for the ROI, and it serves as a friendly reminder that baseball is more volatile than most sports and to manage the bankroll accordingly. Bobby Dalbec of the Boston Red Sox is facing an ex-Red Sox pitcher today in lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, who uses his fastball and changeup almost 66% of the time to the right side of the plate. Dalbec has a wOBA of at least .372 and an ISO of .242 against both pitches, while Rodriguez has allowed a .320 wOBA against righty hitters. His strikeout rate is solid at 24.5%, but the Red Sox are in Detroit so Dalbec gets all nine innings. Additionally, he was more damaging to lefty pitching last year with a .273 ISO, .366 wOBA and a 129 wRC+. The Red Sox offense may be able to pick up on little things Rodriguez does since they played together for the past few years, and this ROI is appealing.

Shane McClanahan Over 6.5 Strikeouts

Shane McClanahan is on the mound for the Rays against the Oakland Athletics later tonight, and he looked excellent in his first start, striking out seven hitters on just 68 pitches against the Baltimore Orioles. Shane McClanahan is likely going to be on a longer leash tonight, as Tampa has had to dip into the bullpen early and often this year because of an injury to starter Luis Patino after just 13 pitches a few nights ago. McClanahan has a strikeout rate of 26.3% over his career, and that has stayed about equal to both sides of the plate. The projected lineup for Oakland has a combined strikeout rate of 25.8% since the start of last year, and this is still a vulnerable offense as Oakland rebuilds. The Awesemo Parlay Calculator gives a return of +1927 for these four wagers, and that would be a great way to continue to build the bankroll through the MLB season.
