PGA Odds & Expert Picks: John Deere Classic

In this new weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the John Deere Classic.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Aaron Wise

Outright 40-1 (BetMGM)

Like last week, this field is so weak that it is wide open for a ton of players to get in the mix. Wise already has a PGA tour win on the resume, so the talent is not the concern, but sustaining the form certainly is. A few weeks ago Wise went into Travelers with momentum off four straight made cuts but finished 66th. The result does not tell the full story, however, as he gained four strokes tee to green but lost five with the putter. That is masking what is a stretch of good ball striking; Wise has gained at least four strokes tee to green in four of his last five events. If he can sync up an erratic putter with that form, there is no reason he cannot contend here.

Wise’s line of 40-1 to win is more than enough for a flier given the lack of star power up top. His game is quietly trending upward, and it would not be shocking for Wise to close out the 2021 season strong.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Beau Hossler

Outright 70-1 | Top 10 +600 (PointsBet)

Despite a bit of a disappointing finish to last week, there is no reason to go off Hossler here. He gained strokes across the board and continued to show progression with his ball striking, losing strokes on approach in just one round. Hossler has now landed three straight top-25 finishes and gets a simple course that has helped players with good length off the tee who can get hot on the greens.

Hossler ranks second in bentgrass putting splits over the last 50 rounds and finished 26th here in 2019, gaining 5.9 strokes putting. With his long game in perhaps the best shape it has ever been in on tour, Hossler’s odds are deep enough to take a shot on him for a big place and an outright this week against an even weaker field.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Russell Henley

Outright 20-1 | Top 10 +180 (BetMGM)

Henley has been relatively constant on the first page of the leaderboard for the last month. He has not ended many starts there, and he has in fact rarely landed in the top 10, but it is clear top form is not far away. Finishing second here last year should give him the confidence he needs to find the winner’s circle for the first time since the 2017 Shell Houston Open.

Max Smotritskiy’s Pick: Scott Stallings

Outright 50-1 | Top 10 +550 (BetMGM)

It is not every tournament that one gets a chance to bet Stallings to win and feel good about it. Stallings absolutely loves TPC Deere Run. He has three top-20 finishes in his last four tries here and comes in showing excellent form. Stallings has gained strokes tee to green in three of his last five starts and even has a top-five finish at the Byron Nelson to show for his efforts. Last week he gained 6.1 strokes ball striking and finished 25th. However, that should have been a lot higher, as he lost a whopping 3.6 strokes around the green. This is a really fluky stat that varies way too much to be predictable, and thus focusing on ball striking is more important. Do not hesitate to take a 50-1 shot at Stallings this week, as this just might be the spot he breaks his seven-year winless drought.

Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Seamus Power

Outright 35-1 | Top 10 +360 (PointsBet)

The Power is on, and that’s something to be invested in. His current form rivals that of any other player in this field: Seven consecutive made cuts, four consecutive top-20s and finally some form with the flat stick last week, gaining 5.7 strokes on the greens in Detroit. That bodes well in what is sure to be another birdie fest, as Power has shown a propensity to go low in these weaker-field events, evidenced by his six sub-70 rounds the past two weeks. While 35-1 doesn’t seem that appetizing of a number, he has gained strokes with the approach five consecutive starts and looks primed to pop one of these weeks. Let’s hope that’s at TPC Deere Run this weekend, where it would be shocking not to see Power in the mix on Sunday.
