NHL Betting Picks: Kings vs. Coyotes | March 3

The Kings come into this game off two losses to the Wild but remain 6-2 over their last eight games. While you don’t want to brush two losses like that under the carpet, the Kings played Minnesota tight in that series and took the last game there to overtime. Los Angeles is getting resurgent years from many of their veterans and have the better offense here, as they’re averaging 3.0 goals per game and have a power play that’s been hitting on 25% of their chances. Even if they are still lagging in some advanced indicators, the offense has been sufficient to support a defense that has them ranked sixth in penalty-kill efficiency and 13th in scoring chances allowed on the season. They’re also getting good production form their goalie tandem as Calvin Petersen enters this game with a .928 save percentage, while Jonathan Quick has a .950 save % over his last four games. The playoffs aren’t guaranteed, but they are in site for a team that sits fifth in the division.

The Coyotes are in sixth in the division, a point behind the Kings. Arizona enters on a two-game losing streak, as they were outscored 9-4 in a two-game set with the Avalanche. Colorado has owned Arizona over the last couple seasons, but Arizona’s issues go deeper than just a bad record against one of the division’s better teams. Their workhorse in net, Darcy Kuemper, has been ruled out for the immediate future, and it looks like Antti Raanta and Adin Hill will hold down the fort. Raanta played for the first time in over two weeks against Colorado and allowed 5 goals on 40 shots. He was solid for them in stretches last season but has dealt with injury issues as well. Kuemper’s loss is a big deal, as this is a team that relies on defense and goaltending given they score just 2.6 goals per game and have a power play that hits at just under 20%. They will need more offensive output from a weak bottom six if they want to keep up in the West in the short term.

Best Bet: Kings Moneyline +102 (DraftKings)

To be honest, I’m not sure why the Coyotes are favored here. On top of being without their best goalie tonight, the Coyotes enter this game with worse special teams than Los Angeles and are also allowing more scoring chances than the Kings. While they are creating a few more chances on their own, they are also running into a pretty solid Kings defense that is backed by a very good goaltending duo at the moment. The Kings have been solid against the bottom half of this division, going 3-1-1 against Arizona (2-0), Anaheim and San Jose. Plus, they will be getting a shot at either an under-cooked Raanta or a third string in Hill. Both teams need a win here to avoid three-game losing streaks, but Los Angeles looked far more competitive in their losses than Arizona. Even if you think there is not much between these teams, taking the plus-money available here on the home Kings is still worthwhile in the long term, making this a solid add to NHL betting picks cards tonight.

Bonus: Capitals Moneyline +130 (FanDuel)

We will stick with another underdog on the moneyline here and go for max value. The Capitals come into this game with momentum, as they’re 6-1-1 in their last eight and are coming off a sweep of the Devils. Alex Ovechkin finally picked up a goal in his last game (just his second over the last nine starts), and the fact that the Capitals have been winning without a ton of contribution from their captain is a solid sign this run has legs. The Caps are getting back to full strength with Ilya Samsonov returning in net last game, and they get a Bruins team that has chalked up bad losses to the Rangers, Devils and Islanders (twice) over their last six starts. Washington has also owned this series and won eight of the last nine games in Boston. Series records aside, Washington has simply been the better team of late and should be viewing this spot as a great chance to pick up ground in the East. They’re worth backing at this price.
