NHL Betting Picks: Wild at Kings Preview | Feb. 26

Both of these teams are rolling, and this matchup should make for an exciting game tonight. The Wild have won four games in a row after getting trounced 4-0 by the Kings in their first game back after a long COVID-19 break. Minnesota has received some serious offensive help from their newly formed second line of Victor Rask, Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello, as the three men have combined for 20 points between them over the Wild’s last four games. Minnesota has averaged 5 goals per game as a team in that span as well and are also getting great goaltending right from Kaapo Kahkonen, who has won four straight games and posted a save percentage of over .930 in each of those contests. The Wild are seventh in expected goal rate, so we shouldn’t be overly shocked that their offense is finally starting to produce at more consistent levels.

The Kings have been one of the biggest surprises of the season thus far. They are third in the West with a +7 goal differential and have won six straight games. Both of their goalies have played superb lately, with Jonathan Quick showcasing some of his Stanley Cup-winning upside from years past. Quick comes into this game with shutouts in two of his last three starts and seems likely to draw in here. The Kings have improved their depth in the scoring department this season and rank 10th in goals scored per game and 11th in power-play efficiency. There are signs that this hot streak may not last — they have given up the 12th-most scoring chances this season — but until their goaltending regresses, expect the Kings to remain competitive.

Wild vs. Kings Over 5.5 goals (+100) — FanDuel, Sugarhouse, MGMBets

This game is interesting as we have two teams playing very well, with both teams relying on hot goaltending. As such, the total has moved to over/under 5.5 and is even giving us plus money to take the over. Goaltending can be highly variable, though, and if we look back at this series, three of the five games has seen these teams combine for seven goals or more. The last meeting (a 4-0 Kings win) was one to ignore given the Wild were coming off a long COVID break.

The over is also appealing from the fact that Minnesota’s offense still seems to be discounted. As mentioned above, they have added depth up front with the return of Zuccarello from injury, and they have started to pick things up on the power play as well, landing goals on the man advantage in two of their last three games. Los Angeles also been more consistent scoring-wise this season, as they come in averaging over 3.1 goals per game and have potted 3 or more goals in seven of their last eight games. It feels like too much respect is being given to recent goalie performances and not enough to the fact we have two above-average offenses going up against each other. I like taking the plus money and the over for this NHL betting pick tonight.

Bonus: Avalanche Puckline (-1.5, +155) at Coyotes — MGMBets

Colorado heads into tonight’s game with the Coyotes fifth in expected goal rate but just sixth in the division and 4 points behind the leading Golden Knights. The West is ultra-tight this year, so every game matters for the Avalanche, who are also coming off back-to-back bad losses. They are better than the Coyotes everywhere, though, and should be viewing this series (the teams’ first meetings of the year) as a great chance to make up some ground in the division. They dominated the Coyotes in the playoffs last year, outscoring them 22-8. I like playing them at bigger odds for the cover.
