Outright Favorites
Chase Elliott is once again the outright favorite in a road course race. As has been the case with each road race this season, Elliott is given the benefit of the doubt at BetMGM with short +200 odds to win this Sunday’s event. With back-to-back victories in this event as well as two victories in road course races this season, and fourth place being his worst finish in these types of events since COTA, Elliott is fully deserving of these numbers.
Trailing Elliott is his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson, currently sitting at +450. While the averages are not nearly as good as Elliott, Larson has shown himself more than capable of turning right this season, evidenced by his two road course victories at Sonoma and Watkins Glen. It does bear mentioning that Larson’s road course victories this year came at tracks that he was familiar with. Should trends continue, Larson makes tons of sense as the next most likely driver to win at Charlotte on Sunday.
Outside of Elliott and Larson, the only two other victors in 2021 road course races were Christopher Bell (+1600) at the Daytona Road Course and A.J. Allmendinger (+2000) at the Indianapolis Grand Prix. Bell ran strong throughout the Daytona event but benefited from a late caution that saw the field get pulled back together after Elliott was well on his way to winning. At Indianapolis, Denny Hamlin should have been that day’s victor but an over-aggressive Chase Briscoe had other plans. Hamlin did manage to finish third in the Daytona Road Course race from earlier this season but his history at the Roval is lacking at best (12th, 19th, 15th).
Top Five Bets
Sadly, BetMGM has no top-10 odds posted as of the writing of this article. The pivot is made to top-five odds – juicier in terms of payouts but harder to hit on, especially in a road race.
There are appealing numbers and the first driver to pop off the board is Allmendinger +275. Allmendinger is the reigning back-to-back winner of this event, in the Xfinity Series, and has finished seventh or better in three of his four Cup Series road racing starts this year. At slightly higher odds comes Alex Bowman at +325 who has finished eighth or better in all three starts here at the Charlotte Roval. Besides track history, Bowman needs to push for a win as his points deficit (-52) is large enough to Chase Elliott that a win is the only guarantee he advances to the third round of the playoffs. Even if Bowman fails to win (+2500), the effort of chasing that victory should put him into contention for a fifth-place or higher finish.
Best NASCAR Bets and Parlays
The following are an interesting list of parlays, props, and side bets being offered by BetMGM for Sunday’s race at Charlotte:
