NASCAR Picks & Predictions: NASCAR All-Star Race at Texas

Kyle Larson to win (+500)

This week’s outright betting market for the NASCAR All-Star Race looks as it would if this were just a normal race at Texas Motor Speedway. Three Hendrick Motorsports drivers sit in the top four in odds, while the odd man out is Alex Bowman, who, despite his win at Las Vegas, continues to have larger odds compared to his cohorts at Hendricks. Kyle Larson graces the top of the board once more with +500 odds, coming off his near-win at Kansas. Last week’s runner-up effort by Larson was his fifth top-10 finish in his past six races. Following Larson is Kyle Busch (+700), who finished third at Kansas, then Chase Elliott (+800), who was on his way to a top-five finish before completely losing a left-rear tire off his wheel. Then William Byron (+900) led 25 laps but got stuck in traffic and ended his day in 16th.

The only rules NASCAR is playing with for Sunday’s All-Star Race are qualifying and how the field will be set in the final 50-lap feature. As per the Generation Seven car, NASCAR is leaving everything alone to make sure that the focus of Sunday evening is not on some weird spoiler height or engine spacer reducing horsepower. What fans witness on Sunday evening will be the same vehicle they have watched at Kansas, Las Vegas and Auto Club Speedway. With this in mind, it is hard to get past last year’s Texas All-Star Race winner, as well as Texas playoff race winner, Larson, who comes into Texas with finishes of first at Auto Club and second at both Las Vegas and Kansas. Granted, his second-place effort at Las Vegas was fueled by pit strategy as he was in 12th with 27 laps remaining but at the halfway point of that race, he was running second. At Auto Club and Kansas, Larson qualified up front, held position and put himself in winning spots. If it were not for the combination of Larson running so close to the wall, plus the late-run speed that Busch had, Larson probably could have had his second win of 2022.

The key for Larson is going to have a short-run car, regardless of where he starts on Sunday night, that can propel him to the front in the first 25-lap segment. By finishing first in that segment, he can lock up the first spot in the main feature and set himself up for victory and the $1 million prize. Over at DraftKings Sportsbook, Larson is tied with Elliott at -500 for the top odds to advance to the round of eight during qualifying wherein the pit crews will help determine who wins the pole. Thus, the expectation already exists that Larson is going to have a fast car, and with the low tire wear aspect of this track, with the pole Larson can establish a firm lead that he can carry over into the last 50 lap feature and eventual competition caution that NASCAR might call to squeeze the field back together.
