NFL Futures Bets + NFL Odds: 2020 New England Patriots Over/Under Win Total 8.5 | NFL Picks

The 2020 NFL season is coming in hot, which means your betting card for the season needs a double-check. We’re going to be going over a copious amount of NFL futures bets, NFL odds, NFL betting picks and NFL predictions for the 2020 campaign. Sportsbooks have released win totals for every team, and we’re going to examine strengths, weaknesses, schedules and make predictions on the over/under. Right now, we’re looking at the New England Patriots.

The Patriots enter a new era and what a time to do it in the year of 2020. Cam Newton is ready to flash and prove everybody wrong. We have seen nine straight seasons in which New England has had double digit win projections in their NFL futures win total. This season has lowered expectations with the loss of Tom Brady and some key defensive contributors.

My vote for the MVP this season will be for Bill Belichick if they get into the postseason as division champs. Some feel this is still the team to beat in the division with Mr. Hoodie back. While it is tough to go against the greatest coach ever arguably, the offensive pieces have many scratching their heads. Which skill player is going to ball out? Julian Edelman is getting long in the tooth and the backfield seems like a classic case of musical chairs. The receivers were a disaster last season and time remains to be seen if they have dramatically improved.

Strengths

This coaching staff is still one of the most productive in the entire NFL. The team is always disciplined and pays attention to detail better than any franchise I have seen in decades. Those first two or so months last season was incredible to watch. They weren’t doing much offensively, but the defense was as dominant as we saw from a scoring standpoint. The offense took care of the ball, but lacked explosiveness. If they can come close to replicating the 2019 season, this team could get back to challenging for at least a playoff spot. Cam Newton is a question mark since his health and body status certainly is in the air. How far away is he from his MVP season in 2015? The defense still has the reigning player of the year on defense and should be respectable up front like usual.

Weaknesses

The passing attack was non-existent down the stretch and Tom Brady looked like a shell of himself. Will Newton be an upgrade over TB12? Time will tell, but I wouldn’t hold your breath on the offense becoming a juggernaut. It won’t have to be great per se, but it needs to be better than last season if they want to come close to being a contender in the AFC. The expectations are lower, but many are still expecting them to challenge for a playoff berth. Without a stud in the backfield, the committee approach will have to work yet again. So many different players have roles, but James White has been the most productive. A tremendous pass catcher and the true MVP in Super Bowl 51, White could be Newton’s best bud. Short underneath routes could be critical in close games this season. White has moved the sticks for years, but Newton will have to build a great rapport with him. Edelman and N’Keal Harry are solid receivers, but they have questions on whether or not they will come up huge in their premier games that will determine whether or not this team can become a true playoff squad.

Schedule

The NFC West is going to be a pain in the rear end for the Patriots. Taking on some solid west coast teams in the month of September could be a struggle as well. Overall, this schedule is manageable if they can win some solid home games in the division. If they can go at least 4-2 in the division, New England should be right there at the end of the season. December could be fun with road trips against the Chargers, Rams and Dolphins. Those three games (in 14 days) will determine whether or not they hit the over and or reach the postseason.

Prediction

I still like this team due to a tremendous coaching staff, but the talent has dropped off a bit these last two seasons. Being methodical is tough to put pressure on the opposing defenses in the NFL. Cam will need some help on the outside. Edelman must stay healthy and avoid the case of the dropsies like he couldn’t last season. I foresee solid play from Cam, but it will be tough to play an exceptional All-Pro level of ball. New England is right there thanks to a very good defense and the division has some winnable games. At just 8.5 with solid juice, the Patriots should win this NFL betting pick. Some totals are set at 9 with much less juice. Getting to double digit wins will be extremely tough and I lack confidence to take the over on that total. They will hover around .500 for the majority of the season. I like the over on 8.5, but anything more and I would take a pass. Something to remember is the Patriots have not hit an under since 2009. Yes, they have either pushed or hit the over for the last decade. At 8.5 wins, I like the NFL odds and I look for that trend to continue.
