NHL Betting Picks: Flames at Maple Leafs | Feb. 22

Start time: 7:00 p.m. EST

Venue: Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, Ontario

A struggling Flames squad heads into Toronto to face the planet’s hottest player, Auston Matthews. In the last four contests, Matthews has tallied 7 goals and 12 points total. With 18 goals overall on the year, he has 6 more than the next closest players (Brock Boeser and Connor McDavid).

Calgary has been hit with a myriad of issues the last few games. Their normally dependable goaltender Jacob Markstrom has allowed 5 goals in each of his last two starts and going 1-3 with 15 goals allowed in his last four. In this same stretch, the Flames have been shuffling lines and looking disjointed with Centers Mikael Backlund (has returned) and Sean Monahan (day-to-day) missing time. And of course, facing the Oilers doesn’t often help any defense, but even in the grand scheme of things, Calgary’s defense and penalty kill lies in the bottom third.

The Maple Leafs offense has been rolling all season, leading the league with 3.79 goals per game, including at least five goals in three of their last four outings. This doesn’t exactly feel like the best spot for Markstrom to get his game back, and if we’re lucky it could be David Rittich (0-3, .874 save percentage) between the pipes. If that’s the case, these odds will get increasingly worse very fast and we’ll have to look elsewhere for NHL betting.

Best Bet: Toronto Maple Leafs Puckline -1, -115 (Sugarhouse)

I was honestly surprised to see the odds come out this low in such a favorable spot for the streaking Leafs. With the uncertainty surrounding the Flames roster up and down, their recent struggles and Matthews being on the ice give me a good bit of confidence. Their league-pacing power play and offense will be too much to handle for whoever is starting at enter and goalie for Calgary.

Bonus Bet: Kevin Fiala To Score A Point -125 (Sugarhouse)

Riding a two-game goal streak and 5 points in his last five, the spot looks great for Kevin Fiala going up against the second-worst defense in the NHL. Fiala has picked up the aggression since the Wild’s return from COVID, with 5 shots in each game. The Sharks are great for all opponent’s offensive picks in NHL betting, and this spot is no different.
