NHL Odds & Betting Picks: Lightning vs. Red Wings
The newly constructed divisions in the NHL have given us some weird matchups we need to get used to. You can add this one to the list of those odd NHL betting decisions we have to make now every day. The reigning champs have started the season off strongly, going 5-1-1 even without prolific goal scorer Nikita Kucherov. Fortunately for them, they’ve avoided the early-season injury bug, and team captain Steven Stamkos has cashed in with 9 points to lead arguably the deepest team in the league.
On the opposing side, the Red Wings are once again battling for worst team in the league, going 2-6-2 and struggling to find any semblance of offense (or defense). Averaging only 2 goals per game, they find themselves dead last in the league again. To make matters worse, they are sporting the worst penalty kill in the NHL at just 64.5%. Management’s inability to surround Dylan Larkin with any NHL-ready talent makes for little chance of improvement.
Best Bet: Tampa Bay vs. Detroit Over 5.5 Goals (PointsBet, -115)
There will not be many more lopsided matches we see on the year, with Tampa carrying so much talent up and down the roster and Detroit so little. Hitting this over is a lot more to do with Tampa completely dominating the ice and scoring at will. Thus far the Lightning averaging 3.43 goals per game, which ranks 10th in the league despite an average power play. They are converting just 24% of their opportunities (13th in league), but the matchup with the worst penalty-killing unit in the league screams positive regression. Losing Kucherov will obviously take some of the firepower away, but his replacement, Anthony Cirelli, continues to get better and already has 7 points on the young year.
There’s no doubt that the moneyline for NHL betting is appealing, but the odds bear that out (-278). If Tampa can improve on their special teams, there is no reason to think they won’t put up a bundle.

Bonus Bet: Steven Stamkos Goal Scorer +120 (MGM)
Being able to double up on the over is doable with bets going across multiple sites. As mentioned above, the Red Wings’ penalty kill is dead last in the NHL. So far in the 20-21 season, Stamkos has put up 3 powerplay goals, tied for third in power-play goals per game. Detroit’s lack of discipline at over 4 penalties per game and Stamkos’ propensity to score on them sets up well in this game.
