NHL Betting Picks: Avalanche vs Kings | Jan. 19

We are only three games into the season for these two teams, so we can’t take a lot from what they’ve done thus far. Still, there is plenty of usable data at our disposal for NHL Betting Picks.

The Avalanche are the far more talented team coming into this matchup in Los Angeles. After dropping their first game to St. Louis in ugly fashion — scoring just one goal — they immediately went back to their big-three top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen. These three alone are arguably all better than anyone on the Kings and showed up large last game with seven points between them in the 8-0 drubbing of the Blues.

Colorado punishes teams with their dominant power play that capitalized on 65.7% of opportunities last year (6-for-11 this year). To compound that, they also drew the most penalties last year with 261 (second unit had 245). The Kings were decently disciplined and fell in the bottom half of the league in power plays against. That said, in their first series of the year versus the Wild they took six penalties each game.

The Kings did possess two goal leads in each of their first two games with good physical play. They were able to keep the Wild’s speedsters in front of them. Unfortunately for them, their lack of talent caught up to them in the third period each night, and Jonathan Quick couldn’t hold them at bay.

Best Bet: Colorado Puck Line -1.5 +115 (SugarHouse)

There isn’t an aspect of this game that I would give the  Kings an edge besides lack of speed. The Avalanche should be able to overwhelm them up and down the ice regardless of the situation. Judging by their issues controlling the Wild for three periods, I’d be stunned if they can hang here. The Avalanche will use their speed and special teams to exploit the less-talented Los Angeles team from the get-go and make for a great NHL Betting Pick. The only way this game stays close is if Vezina Quick shows up.

Bonus NHL Betting Picks: Jack Eichel Anytime Goal Scorer +150 (MGM)

Jack Eichel has been held scoreless thus far, so we’re getting good odds on him to pot one here against the Flyers. Without top center Sean Couturier, the Flyers showed a large hole last night, giving up 6 to the Sabres. Eichel and the Sabres should seize the opportunity again with a backup goalkeeper in net. Averaging better than a goal every three games for his career, the value of this bet is worth it alone.
