NHL Betting Picks: Avalanche vs. Sharks: March 1

Game Info: Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks

There is little argument that any team has had a stranger start to the season than the Sharks, who played zero home games in the entire first month of the season due to California’s guidelines. And in their attempt to even play games as the “home team,” the games were postponed because of the opposition having COVID issues. Couple those oddities with the Sharks’ own COVID issues, and you create a recipe for disaster with a team that was already expected to be bad, especially defensively.

As it stands now, the Sharks are allowing the second-most goals per game in the league at 3.89 per contest, with no signs of improvement. The Sharks’ biggest issue, beyond a defensive core not concerned with defense, is their netminder. As one of just two teams saving under 88% of shots being fired in the league, it’s no wonder they have struggled keeping opponent’s under 3 goals all year — they have only done it three times, twice against the Ducks.

The Avalanche, on the other hand, have been the near polar opposite of the Sharks in their own end. They rank fourth in goals allowed, first in penalty kill percentage and second in shot suppression. We often think of this team flying around and relying heavily on its stars in Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen, but that just hasn’t been necessary. And even though both are having mediocre years by their standards, the team as a whole has done a fantastic job controlling possession, with the league’s best Corsi-for. If they pick it up offensively, this team appears to be destined for some big things.

Bet of the Day: Avalanche Puckline -1.5, +140 (MGM)

The first two meetings between these teams may be a great representation of what is to come, with the Avalanche putting up 10 goals. The Sharks just simply don’t have an answer to stop any team when they have the puck. With the best possession numbers in the game, the Avalanche will have plenty of opportunities to score. When teams have opportunities against the Sharks, they often convert. It sounds simple because it is.

Bonus: Elias Lindholm Goal Scorer +250 (William Hill)

As was eluded to above, there is only one team worse defensively than the Sharks: The Senators. Elias Lindholm notched one in the goal column last game against the Senators, and I would be almost surprised if he doesn’t again here. He leads the Flames forwards in ice time, getting over 21 minutes per game, and now he is being paired up on the top line with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. The scoring chances should go up, along with the minutes.
