Expert PGA Golf Betting Picks & Sony Open Predictions

In this new weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the 2022 Sony Open.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Joel Dahmen

Outright 50-1 (DraftKings)

The first traditional event of 2022 is here, which means a nice payout for those who can hit an outright. Of the favorites, Marc Leishman is the guy I have the most interest in, but for longer shots, take a look at Joel Dahmen. He sits at 50-1 odds and played last week, which is a plus coming into the Sony. Although Dahmen could not keep up with the guys shooting 30 under, he still got some reps and really just did not do much around the greens. The positive off-tee and approach numbers are encouraging, and the 50-1 number is more than enough to warrant him making outright cards this week.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Christiaan Bezuidenhout

Outright 60-1 (DraftKings)

This is a great event to target some mid-range players for outrights in the betting odds as we do not have a ton of elite names in the field. While the popular move here has been to target players who have participated in the Tournament of Champions the week prior, recent form is the real trend to be aware of here. Eleven of the last 12 winners at Waialae had produced a sixth-place finish or better in one of their three prior starts to winning this event. Christiaan Bezuidenhout fits this trend nicely, as he picked up a sixth-place finish at the South African Open in December and also landed fourth- and third-place finishes over the fall (BMW PGA, Korn Ferry Finals). He is a high-end putter (first in this field in strokes gained putting), great around the greens and also ranks top 20 in proximity from 125 to 150 and from 150 to 175 yards (the two busiest approach baskets at this venue). Bezuidenhout has four professional wins since 2019 and is capable of breaking through for a win in a field like this.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Cameron Davis

Outright: 60-1 | Top 10: 5-1 (DraftKings)

It was a great start to the year for Cameron Davis, who had been struggling for some time after his breakthrough win last year. Against some of the world’s best, Davis gained strokes across the board last week, with approaches being his worst. A little bit of improvement this week against a weaker field and his comfort around the course — he already has a top-10 finish — make him a top play this week.

Max Smotritskiy’s Pick: Hudson Swafford

Outright: 100-1 | Top 10: 9-1 (Caesars Sportsbook)

This pick is not for the weak of heart, as Hudson Swafford will not be popping up on many radars this week. However, Swafford performs really well in this stretch of the season and had a great stretch of events to finish off the year just a few months ago, gaining strokes on approach in eight of nine and tee to green in his last four. Around-the-green game let him down, but Swafford can get hot in that aspect as well from time to time. He has great history at this event, making the cut in his last five tries and finishing third two years ago. Swafford makes for a great bet as well as a leverage DFS play this week.

Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Maverick McNealy

Outright: 45-1 | Top 10: +450 (DraftKings Sportsbook)

After a lackluster FedEx Cup Playoffs, McNealy turned it on during the Fall Swing with five-of-six made cuts, including a second and three-consecutive top-25s to close out the year. Over his past 50 rounds, there is not a single strokes-gained data point where he is outside the top 50 amongst this field, which speaks to the well-rounded nature of his golf game. Some might shy away due to him having never played Waialae Country Club before, but 45-to-1 is long enough that he makes the betting card on talent alone.
