AT&T Byron Nelson 2022 Betting Picks & PGA Predictions
Ben Rasa’s Pick: Joaquin Niemann
Outright: +3500 (BetMGM Sportsbook)
This is expected to be a birdie fest, so we want players who have that high birdie upside. Seeing Joaquin Niemann at 35-1 is a number I cannot pass up given his talent and the strength of this field. He should take apart these par 5’s and is quickly becoming a top-end player, highlighted by his dominant victory earlier this year at Genesis. I truly think the days of seeing Niemann at 35-1 in any tournament are going to be ending sooner rather than later, so I will back him at this number any time it is available.
Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Matthew Wolff
Outright: +13000 (DraftKings) | Top 10: +900 (DraftKings)
I have been getting close with my longshot attempts (David Lipsky two weeks ago, C.T. Pan last week), and I like looking to Matthew Wolff this week at even longer odds to get over the hump. Wolff came off a layoff last week and landed a 25th-place finish in what was essentially his best start of 2022. Wolff was wild with his driver in Maryland — which cost him a top-10 on Sunday — but much more dialed in everywhere else, and he notably gained strokes on approach for the first time in seven PGA Tour starts. TPC Craig Ranch is going to afford Wolff a ton more room off the tee, and if his irons and putter keep grooving, he should be able to challenge for at least a top-10. Wolff has six top-10s across the last two years on the PGA Tour, so while his recent form still looks cloudy, the +900 number for a top-10 looks entirely too big for such a talent.
Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Aaron Wise
Outright & Each-Ways: Multiple Sportsbooks
According to OddsShopper, Wolff is one of the top plays this week for a number of different bets, but it seems my comrade Geoff Ulrich likes him quite a bit as well. So we’ll head to Aaron Wise, who’s on a bit of a breakout himself. He is being offered at 50-1 to win the tournament on FanDuel and slightly better each-way odds on BetMGM. Wise seems to have a bit more confidence with the putter right now, which should lead to a win eventually this season.
Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Dustin Johnson
Outright: +2200 (BetMGM)
When it comes to going low, Dustin Johnson has proven himself more than capable of being up to the task. In 2020 alone, Johnson put up a 30-under total at TPC Boston for an 11-stroke runaway victory during his run to the FedEx Cup, and he followed that performance up by setting the Masters Tournament scoring record of 20 under par, albeit under easier November conditions. Coming off of two top-12s in his past four events, there seems to be signs of life to Johnson’s game again that resemble that run of form from two years ago, especially in the ball-striking department. And fresh off his wedding to Paulina Gretzky last month, perhaps he can hit the reset button and get back to playing like a top-five player on the planet.
